The Official Neftali Feliz AA Debut Thread
Tonight, against the Arkansas Travelers, RHP Neftali Feliz will make his Texas League debut.
In 82 IP this season, Feliz is 6-3 with an era of 2.52 in 17 starts. He has only allowed 55 hits and 28 BB to go along with 106 Ks. His groundball/flyball ratio is 1.64 with only 2 HR allowed. Over his last 50 IP, he has recorded 67 Ks.
He's good. The Arkansas Travelers are not.
They are dead last in the Texas League with a second half record of 4-12. They have currently lost five straight games and have the worst offense in the league.
It could be a long night for the Travelers.

Ugh, I wish
I didn’t have to work. Zywica or anyone, if you’re at the game tonight, please post a diary tonight or tomorrow with a report.
Time you enjoy wasting was not wasted.
If no one else does
I definitely will. I suspect that we’ll get several reports.

Feliz
Over his last 10 starts, Feliz has only finished 6 innings twice. They’ve been pretty conservative with him.
That's what I figured ...
just wasn’t sure if it translated into an official pitch count or not, especially after skipping BAK.
Surely Hindman wouldn’t miss a detail like that, at least not now ;)

Ken Tremendous: I like that the #1 reason he will help his team is: "energy," and the distant #2 reason is: "ability to hit baseballs."

97-98 on the fastball
His slider is 86ish and pretty sharp. The hit in the second should have been an error on fox. The travs haven’t hit anything hard.
He came out a bit amped up, but he’s settled down. Very impressive so far.

they
seem to be trying to run on him a lot. I don’t know if he’s slow to the plate, or they think gradoville sucks.
Gradoville was struggling, but
Feliz wasn’t holding guys at all. He varied his look at 2B a couple of times, but I don’t think he through the ball to 1st or 2nd the whole time he was out there.

Theoretically, an “entendre” could be extended indefinitely beyond the triple entendre to encompass quadruple entendres, quintuple entendres, et cetera. For the sake of brevity, however, entendres beyond the triple entendre are often referred to as “N-entendres”

Feliz now hitting 101 mphTwice, actually. The stadium gun showed a 100 and a 101, but scouts downstairs had him at 101 twice.
SS Elvis Andrus drove in a pair of runs with a single that delivered 1B Thomas Berkery from third and CF Julio Borbon, who nearly passed Berkery.
Through four shutout innings, Feliz has surrendered three hits (one of which could have easily been an error on 3B Adam Fox). He’s fanned four and not issued a walk. He’s thrown 54 pitches so far, but I don’t have time to count balls and strikes right now.
His stuff isn’t as good as Edinson Volquez’s was when he arrived in Frisco - fastball not as lively and the change is not nearly as good - but he’s not as erratic either. He also does a better job of keeping the ball down than Edinson did at this stage.
I would agree somewhat
I guess it depends on what you’re looking for. Volquez’ changeup made guys look silly, but he had little control of his FB (though better movement than what Feliz showed tonight). And of course he had no curve to speak of either. So, more movement on Volquez’ stuff, more velocity and control on Feliz’. Both pretty awesome raw packages, hopefully Feliz will improve his weaker points as effectively as Volquez has (but without the A-ball retreat).
by Brett Perryman on Jul 7, 2008 9:22 PM CDT up reply actions
i was at the game tonight
and I really believe that Feliz will be what we thought volquez was going to be a few years (and is now) back. He did a terrific job of elevating his fastball and changing hitters eye levels.

The jump to AA will really test his secondary stuff. As seen tonight he got through the order twice with relative ease by throwing mostly fastballs. But that third time through the order even AA guys can lock in on one pitch and they did. Hopefully he can work on his off speed and breaking stuff and that will make him go deeper in games because he can keep batters guessing more.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
AA jump
yeah, you’ve got to think it’s so he can work on the change and slider vs better hitters and learn to mix.
but really if he can even throw an average change, mixed with a high 90s fb, thats brutal
"I'm against picketing, but I don't know how to show it." - Mitch Hedberg
But if he doesn't develop them to be somewhat plus pitches (at the least)
Then he could turn into Verlander. An ace-caliber pitcher who just hasn’t figured out how to make hitters guess over a long period of time. He can do it maybe for a year at that point, but then I think he runs into the same wall that Verlander has hit. Which is probably why that needs to be of the utmost importance now that he’s in AA.
Ian Kinsler has finally earned the right to be the third of my co-favorite players.
wost case scenario
if that happens, he still a very very good relief pitcher.
but as young as he is, given some patience he’ll be fine
"I'm against picketing, but I don't know how to show it." - Mitch Hedberg
Verlander has been pretty friggin good outside of April.

by NoNameOnCard on Jul 8, 2008 12:22 AM CDT up reply actions
Yep
Even if his change is just a show-me pitch, he can still dominant at the AA level thanks to his fastball.

It's inconsistent
When he throws it with the same arm speed as his fastball it can be unhittable. I don’t think he trusts it yet.
Well...
Frisco is the perfect place to work on that and his change. Then he can head up to OKC sometime next year with everything in place and ready to dominate

Hunter so far
8 ip, 6 h, 2 er, 0 bb, 3 k’s. Only 84 pitches needed. Mendoza can learn from watching this guy.
I don’t know much about Albuquerque Isotopes but they seem to have a good lineup (anyone who knows more about the Minors can correct me) so it only adds to my joy that he is able to do this against a good lineup.
And Hunter was only draft last June.
84 pitches?
WOW. If he is doing that I can live with less Ks if he can eat up innings I will take that.

Hunter’s performance might be free to watch online later tonight or tomorrow. I’ll keep an eye out.
Frisco is on local DFW TV next Sunday. The Frisco homepage projects Feliz to start that night for now. Things could change but it’s looking good.
Hunter -- Final line
9 ip, 6 h, 2 er, 0bb, 3 k’s. Only need 94 pitches. Ground outs-fly outs: Hunter 12-10
BTW - Thomas Diamond
Somebody on the NMLR msg board claims they talked with Thomas Diamond yesterday and he did not have surgery. He got an injection instead hoping to pitch thru the problem and put off surgery until the off-season. So, it could be that Diamond will just slip back into his rotation spot this Friday. I saw TD in uniform in the Frisco dugout Sat and Sun on TV. I wondered what he was doing there considering he was supposed to be getting surgery. Guess not.
Someone posted that on this board yesterday as well
Hopefully the reports are true.
