K-Rod gets hit hard
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

So, Nippert's back out for another inning, eh?
He seriously should get the start 5 days from now.

2 against k-rod is highly unlikely, but its more likely than 3..
and thats just hoping nippert can keep it going.
whats our % on winning this… 5%?
2 games over 500 please.
and getting any runs on K-Rod is unlikely
but if we are able to score more than 1, its just as likely to be 3+ as it is only 2.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
The way I look at it
we are lucky to get a few on base and single home a run. But if K-Rod doesn’t have it today, I don’t think its really that unlikely that the Rangers tear it open.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

3-2-5 double play!
Stars in a Texas Night Sky, a Dallas Stars blog from a fan's perspective.
Mathis though that was kind of dirty...
he hit him in the high chest maybe face
Stars in a Texas Night Sky, a Dallas Stars blog from a fan's perspective.
not dirty at all
just a hard play. hard but clean
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
I don't think...
...coming in full speed and slamming your forearms into the catcher’s chest is clean.
by Adam J. Morris on Jul 7, 2008 9:26 PM CDT up reply actions
Exactly...
Clean would have been for him to not raise his arms like he did.
Stars in a Texas Night Sky, a Dallas Stars blog from a fan's perspective.
seriously?
Is he supposed to just give up or something. It was a hard, clean play. Is he supposed to just slam chest to chest into him? If anything raising his arms was for protection of himself more than trying to be dirty.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
He could have slid
Would have been more likely to make it in safely.
by Adam J. Morris on Jul 7, 2008 9:29 PM CDT up reply actions
i'll agree with that
but I bet he also wasn’t expecting the throw to come home. I just didn’t see it as a dirty play. I would have hoped any of our guys would have done the same in the same situation
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Raising his arms...
into Max’s face is protection? If anything, the catcher is the one needing protection in a play at the plate circumstance.
Stars in a Texas Night Sky, a Dallas Stars blog from a fan's perspective.
agreed
looking at the replay, Mathis lifted his elbows up into Max’s face
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
No
It was into Maxs chest
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
if by chest
you mean neck/head, then yes. It was into his chest
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
Max has protection
Thats why they wear all that gear. If Mathis doesn’t raise his arms he is running chest to chest into Max. That is a recipe for injury right there. Go back and watch the replay. He merely raised his arms and ran into Max. He didn’t throw any elbows or hit him in the head it was square into Maxs chest protector
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
I saw the replays...
the arms initially started in Max’s upper chest and raised into his neck and lower face area.
Stars in a Texas Night Sky, a Dallas Stars blog from a fan's perspective.
upon impact
As Max fell back Mathis arms look like they are in his face when in reality they are right where they were.
I just watched it three times again. His arms never went up as he hit him. They extended out as if he is pushing Max. It looks like they go into his head because Max fell backward and thus his head dropped. But Mathis never raised his arms up around Maxs head. Sorry it didn’t happen
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
ummm
my post didn’t post.
anyway I went back and rewatched it three times. When Mathis comes in he raises his arms and hits Max in the chest. Upon impact he extends his arms like he is pushing Max. When Max falls backward and to the ground it appears like Mathis’ arms are around his head but they aren’t. It was a clean aggressive play just like TAG said.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Extending his arms...
...to hit the catcher in the chest is not, to me, a clean play. Would it be okay to do that to the first baseman, say, on an infield roller where the first baseman is trying to tag the runner?
by Adam J. Morris on Jul 7, 2008 9:40 PM CDT up reply actions
yeah
you don’t concede the out so someone on the other team doesn’t get a boo boo. Like I said before I agree he could have slid and probably been safe but if you aren’t gonna slide you don’t just give up and let them get the out. You do your damndest to dislodge the baseball.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Question
Why don’t you see that at other bases? You see guys concede the out at other bases all the time…why is it okay then?
by Adam J. Morris on Jul 7, 2008 9:45 PM CDT up reply actions
2nd base
Guys go into 2nd base hard all the time in an attempt to break up a double play. There are rules that allow for some stuff. Like ARod a few years back you can’t slap at a ball out of a guys glove but if it comes out in a collision its fine. At home plate you have to dislodge the ball. If it takes running into the catcher so be it. You can’t run into a player at 2nd because you would be called out of impeding the baseball or something like that. So you slide hard.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Guys slide in hard
They don’t come in at full speed and plant their forearms into the second baseman’s chest.
by Adam J. Morris on Jul 7, 2008 9:49 PM CDT up reply actions
because thats illegal
running into the catcher is not
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
And players that go hard into 2nd base...
usually get a baseball to the back in their next at bat, or get slid hard into next game themselves. Remember the Rays/Red Sox scuffle?
Stars in a Texas Night Sky, a Dallas Stars blog from a fan's perspective.
if its dirty yeah
but if its just a clean hard slide they don’t. Mathis just made a clean hard play.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
I have a hard time...
...with the idea that barrelling into the catcher with your arms up, in an effort to knock him over and dislodge the ball, is a clean play…

Maybe we should use Padilla as a defensive replacement...
when Mathis comes up, replace someone in the outfield, have him drill Mathis in the head as Harrison plays outfield for the at bat, and then bring Harrison back in to pitch when Padilla gets thrown out.

That's awesome.

A win would be awesome
but i would MUCH rather see a 9-6 loss than the 8-0 from earlier.

You know what the real tragedy in this is?
I had the Ric Flair picture dialed up, ready to post it seven times if Murph went deep.

Fine. But everybody frown when you look at it.

Eh
There have been worse. Nippert was awesome, and we kept on fighting right up until the end.

Do you think he just needs a few days (weeks) off, or is there something fundamentally wrong with his approach at the plate, something that is now showing itself b/c he’s been scouted?
i agree
he doesnt look at all like the same player. he’s driving in enough runs, to keep people somewhat off his back, but he hasnt looked right in a good while.
it's not that... they're getting him with off-speed junk...
