My List of Things the Rangers Need to do By the End of the Season
1.Bring up Tommy Hunter
2.Keep Harrison in the rotation
3.Get Feliz to AAA
4.Decide where Hamilton is gonna play, CF or RF
5.Keep Byrd and Bradley
6.Trade Salty if you can get a young pitcher who is ML-ready and is not another "ground ball pitcher"(if you are a ground ball pitcher then you can do your job and get a groundball then it just goes through a hole then a run scores but if you are a strikeout pitcher and you do your job then no one will score or advance)
7. Trade Millwood or Padilla not both, Cat, Hank (dont need him just to be on the Dl all the time) but trade Hank after he comes back, if ever, and hope he does good
8.Strive for a rotation of Millwood/Padilla, Hurley, Harrison, Feldman, Hunter. Im hoping for the 3 Hs
9.Get Boggs in to more games
10.Keep the team chemistry
11.SWEEP A SERIES
12.Try to say around .500 to maybe build some momentum for '09
13.Be ready to win in 2009!

Keep Bradley?
I still don’t understand this thinking. The guy is held together with bailing wire and is on the wrong side of 30. The injury problems are only going to get worse.

i would trade bradley too
but at least I understand those that want to keep him, since he has been our best pure offensive player.
byrd is struggling, and while his defense is fine weve got hamilton/boggs/murphy who can all play center and cruz who is good defensively too. dont really see the upside that bradley at least has.

He is our best Off player,
but I definitely think this is a great chance to Buy Low, Sell High, and get the pieces that can be the core for the next decade.

the pieces he could bring back far outweigh his value to us this season and next season. and he is not the kinda player that has shown the ability to stay healthy/stable for a long enough period of time to buy stock in him for longer than that. bring back three players, one being first round quality and one being sandwich pick value(would he’s worth if we keep him and let someone else sign him) and you’ve done a good job with creating value and seizing on market timing…
How this guy can know what J. D. and Adam are thinking at those exact moments is beyond me. Milton is my favorite Ranger right now, but...
...I’m pretty sure he holds more value to the team as a trade chip than anything else.
I’ll hate to see him go but for the long term benefit of the team I’ll live with it.

no matter what he is at least worth 2 1sts.
if they dont value recieving 2 picks as compensation and giving up equivilent value more ready for the majors to compete now, then screw them.
i have a feeling that teams in need who are competing will find value in that.

If MB walks and becomes a yankee or a redsox or something
that would be = of us getting 2 sandwich picks.
so do you think the harden offer would be better or worse than us getting 2 sandwich picks or late 1sts? if he signed with the dodgers or SD we would get their 2nd rounder and a sandwich pick.
do you think we can get more value than that by trading MB? i sure as shit do.

by oc on Jul 9, 2008 9:36 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
whoever is still playing for the rangers next season
MB wont return
1) he would be retarded to sign early and JD has mentioned that discussions on extension isnt taking place
2) this is MB’s last chance to earn a real check after all his screw up and any1 who thinks he will take less value to play here is ignoring what MB must get for himself
3) the rangers would be pretty stupid to throw the kinda money it will take to resign him on the open market given budget constraints and long term plans
all you rangers fans are kool aid drinking supporters with lack of vision for the long term goal. we wanna win championships. we dont have the depth on the 25 man roster to do so, and even with a team above .500 we have a decent chance of being double digits behind the Angels at the AS break. but keep MB even though JD said they havent mentioned extension at any point so far and trade some young depth in the farm so we can compete next year and 2010 when we all know thats pretty unrealistic. saddest part is that AJM and Jamey are just as guilty of it of some of the fans that i truly feel dont see the big picture. i always thought most say the big picture for what it is. these days, im not so sure.

you have cost yourself millions upon millions of dollars with mental and physical breakdowns, you are putting together the best year of your entire career on a one year deal in a hitters paradise. the rangers offer you 3 years and 30M the rangers are a couple years aways from competing, do you take that offer or do you fish for a GMJ offer?
do you really think MB would leave 10-20M on the table in a guaranteed contract to take a 2 or 3 year deal?
would you be willing to take a lesser deal in your last chance for a big contract?
put yourself in his shoes and tell me you dont laugh a team out of the building when the rangers offer you 2 years and 16M…

i can't answer these questions, because i'm not Milton...
what i do know is that he’s achieved more success in a half-year in Texas than he has anywhere else. and that Ron Washington probably means more to him than any other manager he’s ever played for.
you can thank Oakland for that. you can also thank Oakland for Bradley’s superior plate discipline.
nobody’s going to offer Bradley a Gary Massacre Jr. contract.

here are my thoughts
1. keep hunter in the minors for now – no need to rush him. he’ll get a good look in the spring.
2. i loved harrison tonight and if he keeps doing that he deserves to be in the rotation, but i have a feeling he’ll have an ugly outing sooner than later and we should only keep him up here if necessitated by injuries. give him another look in september to spell feldman or replace a traded starter
3. agreed – but just a taste of it for a month or so.
4. i like hamilton in center for now with the possibility of moving him when some of our CF prospects come up.
5. resign bradley, but but only for a 2 or 3 yr deal. if he wants more, let another time have that albatross.
6. agreed.
7. trade padilla if the market can give us someone good and cat as well. keep hank and hope he can stay healthy and prove himself the last two months of the season. then re-evaluate in winter.
8. What about McCarthy? im also a little leery of penciling in so many young guys as rotation stallwarts.
9. Boggs should be batting when a lefty starts and occassionaly against righties.

Kinda gives me the heebie-jeebies. I think low A to AA is big enough for this year.
by Keynes on Jul 9, 2008 6:39 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
first of all
- a taste is all Hunter needs this year and probably from the bullpen, unless someone gets hurt
as long as he doesnt look in over his head
-NO Feliz is fine in Frisco for now, he will probably get the Kershaw treatment next year, BUT ONLY if his off speed stuff continues to improve, Kershaw throws hard but his curveball is why he is in the majors now
-why do you have to commit to a certain position for Hammy? I think ultimately he will play RF because his bat is TOOOO important to be running into walls in CF all the time, and maybe in 4 or 5 years he will get the Lance Berkman treatment where he plays 1st a little just to keep some wear and tear off his body
-NO, and ugh NO Byrd is a goner if anyone will take him he is bloking Boggs and Boggs is better, Bradley will be too expensive in the off season so I trade high even though I really started loving the guy, maybe you could get Max Sherzer for him I know they are looking for OF help since Byrnes went down
-I have been all for trading Salty, but now only if you can get some value for him, I really think you would be selling low, but I do think Laird is and will be a better backstop
-Trade BOTH if you can get some value in return, I think either of them has to be towards the top of whats available out there as far as SP’s go on the trade market, if you trade both of them maybe you have the money for CC or Sheets
UGH, SIGH I get heartburn thinking about the rotation

2008 remainder pplans...
1. hunter might get a late august/sept call up and throw from the pen, but he isn’t going to be in the rotation at the start of next year so i don’t think we should hurry too much… though i do think middle of next season we could see him grab one of those spots…
2. if harrison continues to work like he did last nite… yeah, keep him there… but if starts going all mendoza on us… he needs to get back down to 3A and work on his stuff… in an interview after the game he said that he threw his stuff “a lot better than usual”... which doesn’t exactly ring of confidence…
3.feliz is just where he needs to be until he works out that a change up is not just throwing your fastball slower….
4. hamilton will eventually be a the RF… but he’d be better off right now getting his “day’s off” on the bench and not right field… eitherway, doesn’t have to be done by next year… a season and a half and bourbon will probably be in CF anyway…
5. keep byrd – no… keep bradley – love to, but no…
6. i’m actually not too averse to trading salty, i like him and i think he’s going to be great, you can see him improving… but i think eventually a combo of TT and Maximus behind the plate will be very dependable…. and lord knows a salty/mb trade to baltimore would bring a handsome return…
7. i’m on record as saying i think millwood is great example for the young guys and not over proced… keep him… trade crazy-a nicoraguan, and yes, cat if you can get anything for him… can’t trade hank unless his value shooots up by the end of the year… and if we can get a lofton type return for eddie i’m doing it today….
8. the ‘09 roation will probably look more like; millwood, hurley, mccarthy, harrison, feldman… and if thats the case there are going to be plenty of places for 3-4 start stretches for next years pen guys like hunter
9. [Get Boggs in to more games…] sure, after you trade byrdman and bradley you’ll have room to play boggs, and murph….
i also think this puts us in position this winter to go get a 1-2 type pitcher for a 3-5 year deal and money whip them a bit since beyond milly, FOTF, and The Kins we don’t have many making too much…

why do you and others insist on keeping and overpaying veteran players who we cannot afford to keep and wont help us win when the time comes when we actually do have the window of opportunity.
you get value now for guys who wont be here and wont help you win later and exchange them for younger talent that fit your long term vision and the window of your teams rebuilding.

are you watching the youth movement on the texas rangers?
scott kazmir with the rays sure is a "help you win in the future" trade. gagne for us was a "help you win in the future" trade, lofton was a "help you win in the future" trade and max is the 2nd best MiLB hittier around and now promoted. Tex trade was a “help you win in the future" trade.
players from “help you win in the future" trades on the 25 man:
54 Matt Harrison
51 Max Ramirez
25 Jarrod Saltalamacchia
10 Michael Young
7 David Murphy
then of course you have drafted on the 25 man:
39 Scott Feldman
36 C.J. Wilson
19 Chris Davis
6 German Duran
5 Ian Kinsler
41 Brandon Boggs
37 Eric Hurley (injured)
but your right, you should care less about the so called rebuilding plans. do you even remotely see the big picture? have you watched the youth movement on this team game by game this season? have you seen the rapid progression of our minor leaguers?
that my friend is what you call being halfway through a rebuilding process.

Vs. Righties: (CF Hamilton, RF Murphy, LF Boggs, Bradley DH) Vs. Lefties(CF Byrd, RF Josh, LF Boggs, DH Bradley)
Kinsler is the best player on the rangers(done), BENOIT SUCKS(done), bring up Harrison(done),new: Put Nippert in rotation, Mendoza to the pen, get Feliz to AAA by the end of the year, trade cat

Hate to agree with you but...
...that’s the way I’d like to see it too.
Sit Murph against lefties.
Sit Byrd against righties.
Play Boggs more.

Milton is going nowhere...
...and I, for one, don’t mind that at all.

My opinion
that would be a huge mistake

did you listen to what JD said on the radio yesterday
or is that just ignoring that and talking based on opinion?

so you didnt hear JD say they havent even brought up extension with MB yesterday on the ticket?
that would lead you to believe they dont have intentions of resigning him at this point, the fact that they dont have intentions of resigning him as of now, when the deadline is July 31st leads you to believe that “Milton is going nowhere…”
really?

they have no intentions of resigning him yet...
...because they want to see if he can make it through the rest of the season without going on the disabled list.

right
and when he proves he’s healthy and has the best year of his career in his prime on a 1 year deal, how likely are we to be able to afford to keep him.

Pull back the reins on Feliz.
He’s not going anywhere. Let him simmer.

his double A start was good
but not so good that you can see a AAA start in his immediate future. he has some work to do
