Nats axe old players
Jim Bowden made a pretty dramatic move yesterday...unable to deal Paul Lo Duca, Johnny Estrada, or Felipe Lopez, he just flat released them.
Lopez is a switch hitter who can play all the infield positions...I'd be interested in bringing him in to split time with Vazquez at third base and be a utility infielder, rather than Ryan Roberts or Travis Metcalf.

Shouldn't he have just put them through waivers
and hoped someone claimed them for whatever reason? If not, then release them?

pretty much no downside to that

the problem with signing Felipe Lopez
is that Worsh would probably make him the leadoff hitter.
Warner Madrigal makes Ezequiel Astacio look downright handsome.

If we add Hunter
don’t we have to keep him up the rest of the year to refrain from burning one of his options? If it’s true about Mathis, McCarthy, and Murry who will be jettisoned out of the bullpen? Will they just DL Feldman, calling it arm fatigue, to shut him down for the year? Will Mendoza be sent back down to work on starting in AAA? What about Harrison will they option him back?
There are a ton of possibilities but I’m not really sure I like adding Hunter. The 40 will be interesting when McCarthy’s 30 day rehab is up.

Hunter
Thats correct about Hunter. I believe we will see him here the rest of the year. Although in September the rosters expand so even if he struggles a little we only have to really “hide” him for about a month before we can have reinforcements.
As for Mathis, McCarthy, and Murray. I think both Mathis and Murray will be optioned to OKC when their rehab assignments are up and go work down there. Hunter I assume will take Feldmans spot in the rotation and Feldman gets optioned to OKC. The reason I think they option him instead of DLing him is if more injuries happen he could come up for a spot start if needed. If they DL him that possibility goes bye bye.
McCarthy I imagine will get optioned to OKC for about 2 weeks simply because his 30 day rehab is almost up and I don’t think he is ready yet. Sometime around the 10th or 15th he gets called up and takes Mendozas spot. When Millwood comes back Hunter goes to the pen.

Hunter
As long as he spends less than 20 days in the minors after this, no options is used.
My guess is that, if he’s sent down, it will be around August 15, and then he’ll be recalled on September 3, just ensuring no option is used.
