Tim Hudson needs T-J surgery
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is reporting that Tim Hudson needs Tommy John surgery, which would end his season and knock him out for most of 2009.
The Braves are having problems. However, 2009 is an option year for Mike Hampton, Chipper Jones, and John Smoltz, so if they wanted, they could strip down and go real cheap and rebuildy in 2009, with a Marlins-esque payroll (other than the $12 million they'll have to pay Tim Hudson).

Sucks for them but...
...if they go that way they sure could use Salty, Harrison, Andrus, Feliz and Jones right about now. Or as Cuban would say, “Oh to baaad”!

Hudson's $12 million
They should have an insurance policy to cover a significant portion of that if he’s out for the entire season.

Inability to Play
He’d have to be unable to play again beyond a shadow of a doubt. Remember that Jeff Bagwell’s insurance policy didn’t vest despite his injury a couple years ago. Hudson still has a chance (though small) to return in 2009.

Insurance policies
They’ve gotten really hard to get, and really expensive, particularly for pitcher contracts that run more than 3 years. I wouldn’t be surprised if they aren’t insured.

Policy
John Schuerholz talked about Hudson’s policy in his book. If I remember correctly, they have one, but it’s not really worth much. It’s only a small fraction of the contract.

Chipper
Still a very good hitter, but a terrible third baseman, and he has been for years.

Yah
He’d be a kickass DH for someone next year, though.
A one year contract with the Yanks or maybe the Angels, perhaps? Rays as darkhorses?

Chipper and Smoltz
are two faces of their franchise. there is no way they let them walk. there is too much pride in the org for that, and it is not like they have young players who are blocked by those guys. That team is running a sad parallel to the Mavericks right now, and we all know it will not end well.

a future RRP (Rangers Reclamation Project) waiting to happen.

That doesn't work with SP does it?
I thought just RP and hitters.

Yah they need to do a complete rebuild
The problem is though that Chipper is the only of those three departing FA’s who would bring back a DP, cause Hampton and Smoltz would most likely accept arb if offered. (Depending Smoltz’s health… Hampton would leap for joy if offered arb.)
And the only guy they have who could bring back a real haul in trade is McCann, though he could bring back a real big freaking haul.
