PrintJosh Howard has been arrested for street racing.
Bad week for the Mavs...Rockets get Artest, Cuban gets bitch-slapped by the arbitrator in the Nellie lawsuit, and now this.
Feel free to flame away about how I'm being too negative and have ignored all the really great Mavs news there has been over the past month. I'm sure there has been a bunch of it that I'm just ignoring.

always weird how a guy can be seemingly clean and quiet for a while and then in a year or 2 just get in trouble or make bad choices over and over.

Not at all
I mean, I’m happy about the arbitrator’s decision, because I felt Cuban was just being an a-hole about the whole deal and trying to prove a point, and was willing to spend the money on attorneys fees to drag things out. That’s one of the advantages of being a billionaire.
But the Artest deal and the Howard deal sucks. Particularly the Artest deal, because I hate the Rockets.
The only upside of the Artest thing is if it results in the Mavs being in a position come February where they realize they aren’t legit contenders, and need to start rebuilding, allowing them to deal off Kidd for someone with a future, and maybe Howard.

It is a hard call
I don’t think you can get much for him. You are either going to need to find a team that really needs a PG at the deadline, or else a team that wants salary cap space and is willing to give you a good player with a bad contract (and maybe a #1) to get the space.
It is really going to be circumstance dependent. The Mavs will be better off getting what they can for him at the deadline, and hopefully that will be something worthwhile, than just trying to eke into the #7 or #8 spot with him and get knocked out in the first round, with his salary coming off the books and having to hope you can work out a sign and trade after the season.

Why would Dallas take a good player with a bad contract
in a situation where they are looking to rebuild? For example, Sacramento, clearly a team at the point of rebuilding, was looking to deal Artest (a head case) and Kenny Thomas (God-awful, hideous contract). Every team that contacted Sacramento about Artest was also required to take Kenny Thomas and his pig of a contract and Sacramento was looking for compensation for Thomas too. Thus, everyone pretty much balked at that proposition. Finally, Sacramento realized they were just going to have to eat Thomas’ contract and get what they could for Artest.
Point is, pretty much every team except the Grizzlies right now are in cap/luxury hell and looking to clear cap space for a 2010 run at the plethora of prime unrestricted free agents. I don’t see teams looking to take an unnecessary or bad cap hit unless they are on the edge of a championship, which Dallas probably isn’t.

he played like crap, that can’t really be helped. maybe practice and a gut check can fix that.
the weed thing and street racing are small things. the weed shouldn’t even be an issue at all, but it still pissed people off.
little things add up and he’ll develop a reputation as a bad guy or…a cancer. he’s no ron artest or latrell but people will say he’s getting there.
hopefully somebody will tell him to settle down for a while. be quiet, stay out of trouble and have a smile.

Anyway, I have so little emotion invested in the NBA anymore.
Sometimes I worry that a Rangers ascendancy would do the same thing, but baseball still feels too much like meritocracy and great storytelling.

about the fact you don’t know what you’re talking about? You do a fairly good job of that yourself. But, I’m sure you glow in the fact that you think you know people.
