Rangers' High-A Affiliate Possibly Moving
Per Josh Leventhal at BA:
The teams that would move are not set in stone, but Bakersfield and High Desert are at the center of negotiations. Both have been laggards in attendance for several seasons, and complaints about conditions in Bakersfield from the Rangers—the Blaze's major league affiliate—provided impetus for the change.
He goes on to say Fayetteville, NC is a possibility for the move. Also, the Rangers are possibly threatening to terminate their player development contract with Bakersfield early. Overall, it comes down to a bad field, attendance, and minor league officials in Bakersfield itself.

Wouldn't surprise me
From what I recall hearing, as soon as Fuson left, the Rangers started looking at trying to get out of the Cal League.

The mystifying part...
...is why Texas signed a FOUR year contract. Usually they’re just two. Only thing I can guess is Texas thought they were locking themselves into a good situation once a new or rebuilt stadium was in place. But that location began dying a slow death when the Dodgers bailed in 1995. There’s been no movement on a new stadium, and the team was essentially in receivership for a while.

League Bylaws
From what the article says, it also seems the league would rather kill one of their teams than see it move and rebuild from there. Their bylaws put a stranglehold on owners wanting to move out.

Oh, my bad
You’re right.
I swear they got a new team, but I can’t find any indication of it on the interwebs, so you’re right.
Forget what I said above: I’d kill to have them play in Columbia.
I need my Rangers minor league fix.

Yah, there is
Yankees, I believe. But having a minor league team in a city so obsessed with their college teams is kind of mean, imo.
We just built a really kickass new minor league stadium here in Greenville for the Red Sox Low-A team. (Most famous for being the team Kapler managed last year.)

Is that the Carolina League? I’m too lazy to research whether this would be a brand new Minors club.
I just remember reading what an awful hitters league Carolina is when Andrus came over…

It'd be a new club and presumably be in the Carolina league
But don’t think of it as a horrible hitter’s league, think of it as a wonderful pitcher’s league, where all our young pitcher would go to gain confidence and become little future Cy Young winners.

Richmond Virginia
Richmond has lost its AAA team, to Gwinnett Ga. The city has promised to bring baseball back here next season. Personally it would be cool to get a Rangers affiliate here.

i still think
the state of Texas deserves an A league. plenty of cities that already have independent teams and have pretty good attendance. An affiliated league would only increase attendance. Ft Worth, Grand Prairie, San Angelo, Rio Grande area, El Paso back in the mix along with Lubbock, Waco all could have teams.

Waco Has Had Many
Minor League Teams over the years up until the early 1960s, and nothing since then, Waco with it’s central location and the fact that it is located right on I-35 would be a perfect team for the Rangers, the City government is now much more open to something like this, unlike the bunch who ran the town into the dirt from the 1950s to the mid 1990s, Waco is now a very fast growing city, it may be the perfect fir for the Rangers

I believe
He is a Rangers fan from Waco who calls into Mike Ogulnick’s postgame show on KRLD. He evidently does that a lot. Not sure his cards aren’t badly shuffled, but again, I don’t often hear the call in show, so take it with at least a grain of salt.

only 4 teams in Texas in Texas League. Ark, MO, and OK. are others. alot of leagues are several states. An A League entirely in Texas wouldn’t be any different.

One awesome possibility...
would be if the Blue Jays leave Dunedin (my home town), which has been rumored lately… and then the Rangers could move in. They’ve got really nice facilities there.

Would love to see them in the appalachain league.
i am from Myrtle Beach, SC so it would be awesome to get to see some of the young guys play. I get to see all the braves minor leaguers come through, but I would like to see ours instead. I was lucky enough to see Salty and Andrus over the years.

I don't think anybody in the system particularly likes Bakersfield
I’ve been hearing rumors all year that the Rangers wanted to move into the Carolina League, but I just shook them off since the PDC wasn’t up until 2010. I guess this confirms that something is going on though.

If you guys remember my write-up from a Blaze game, I mentioned how empty the stadium was on a Saturday night
I don’t know if I mentioned the field… the grass was nice, the rest of the place was a dump.

For those of you who haven't seen the ballpark in Bakersfield, here.
You might have to right-click it to see the full size.

It’s 354 feet to center.
The sun sets in the evening behind that big wall in center.
That might be all you need to know.

Didn't they try to move before...
And no one wanted them? I seem to remember talk about them trying to get into the Carolina League before they signed their renewal with Bakersfield (Wilmington in particular) but none of the teams wanted to be associated with them because they didn’t consider the Rangers to be an attendance draw. Am I dreaming that? Of course, now they have a lot more good prospects in the lower levels so I suspect they’d be a lot more attractive to teams now.

I live in Austin Tx
so I have tons of minor league baseball around me with The RR express (AAA of the astros) and the SA missions (AA of the Padres). but the nearest rangers affiliate is Frisco which is just as long as a drive as going to arlington. so i would be off my rocker if a rangers A ball affiliate made its way to waco. that would be amazing. since waco is just about 90 minutes on I-35.
touchdown... touchdown... and st.micheals takes the lead.

Won't happen
The only High-A leagues are the Cal League, the Carolina League and the FSL. There is no way any of those leagues would charter a team in Texas…it would be a travel nightmare.

Yep
It’s feasible to put a team into either of the Carolinas, eastern Tennessee, or western Virginia in the CL, but that’s about it. They are very limited to wheels on pavement transportation, and even the time zone matters.

Terrible stadium
Having lived in Bakersfield… they are in desperate need of a new stadium. Sam Lynn Ballpark is AWFUL. So uncomfortable and concessions so bad that a Ranger fan WANTING to be at the park wouldn’t go to the park.
The old owners used to only worry about Opening Night, Fourth of July and one other night for a nice crowd. Otherwise they drew maybe 300 actual butts in seats and announced 750.
The town is actually OK. It is pretty hot in the summer, but with a nice new ballpark the fans may return… but I don’t think they ever will build a new park. When the Dodgers left, that was it. Piazza played there.
Go Cubbies and Go Rangers!
