Minor Moves

Schlact to the DL, John Bannister promoted to Frisco.  Puello promoted to A+ after Pina promotion to AA.  Puello batted .292 in 56 games in 2007 for one of the DSL clubs and was batting .240 in 20games this year for the AZL club.

20th rd 08 draft pick Mike Hollander (SS) released?  Dl'd after 2 games with Spokane, Hollander is not currently listed on any organizational roster.

With Ragsdale moving from the inf to the mound, can 3B Johan Yan be too far behind?  After starting out hot for the AZL club, Yan quickly regressed back to his career sub .200 ave, only to raise that to .236 with a couple of back to back 2-hit games. Yan will be 20.5 yo a/o 4/1/09.

Emmanuel Solis (3B) has really filled out (6-3 220) and is hitting with some pop for the DSL1 club, though not for ave:  39g/.236/ .327/.426/.753/8db/1trp/6hr/21rbi/16 errors.  I guess the club wanted to give Yan his final shot at 3b for the AZL club and kept Solis at DSL1; Solis batted .205 in 45 games for AZL in 2007.   Solis will be 19.8 yo a/o 4/1/09.

I guess 1B Jason Hart is being kept on Clinton's DL all year because he's viewed as an organizational trooper?

update:  I forgot to credit Jamey, Mike, Scott and/or Jason for the Yan to the mound possibility....

must just be an MiLB roster quirk

as he is listed on Clinton’s DL…I’m glad he is still in the system after filling in at OKC last year.

He's on the d.l.

My understanding was that he was sort of a player-coach anyway…I think he’s on the d.l. for procedural purposes, or something.

Maybe Cole knows something.

It's a way to get him more service time...

...I believe.

You don't get service time

in the minor leagues

Nobody knows why

Not even anyone in Clinton. I asked some people in Clinton and they were told he would be the first base coach, but they were instructed to keep them on the roster and on the D.L. all season long.

There has to be some reason for it—I’m just not sure what that reason is.

I asked Jason when I saw him...

He said it had something to do with the fact that he was hired so late. He was hired at the last minute because of a situation with one of their coaches. He didn’t say it, but I got the impression that there is a limit as to the number of coaches allowed so to get around that he was added as a player.

Yeah I posted that ?

some time ago but no one seem to have any answers…signed for about 560k about what M. Perez signed for. I hope it isn’t an Ogando/Beltre “I’ll marry my agent’s cousin” visa issue.

forgot one Minor's note

Tuft Dl’d after 2 games at A+ (7/23, 7/26) but already pitched a rehab game for the AZL club last night. Not much of an injury I guess… Tuft and Roark have been pretty impressive. The Rangers seem to have hit upon quite a # of good-looking bullpen guys this year.

Anyone...

Have a report on how BMac looked tonight. Final line doesn’t look good. Velocity? Off speed stuff?

JMJ went deep. Nice to see, he has struggled a lot lately.

Borbon 2-5 with a BB. Vallejo 3-6 tonight.

Lemon went deep tonight as well. Kiker gave up a couple runs in 2 innings of relief.

Beltre went 3-5 with a 2B.

Fry went 3-5 with a bomb for Spokane.

Nope

He is coming back from an injury.

Well, technically

he is coming back from some soreness in his shoulder but they are going to be cautious with him.

What's the best-case scenario

(most likely) for Beltre next year? any chance he reaches AA?

Borbon

Julio Borbon walked again last night, giving him three walks in the last two nights and five in his last eleven games. His walk-rate during this recent stretch is right at the 10% that Zywica suggests as a reasonable target for a lead-off guy. Might someone in the Rangers organization be whispering in his ear?

Borbon’s 2008 stats
Bakersfield – 306/346/395/741
Frisco – 303/348/394/741

It will be

very interesting to see if he makes the team next spring. If he doesnt, id think he’s the first OF on call in the minors. If they get rid of Byrd in the offseason, Borbon will likely have every shot to make the roster next year

I've always been

on the slow end of the timetable with Borbon, and he’s handled new levels more easily than I thought he might. But I would be in favor of giving him time in AA/AAA next season, if they can afford to. He may be able to survive in the majors at the start of next season, but like I think with Andrus, just because someone can get by in the majors doesn’t mean that it’s the right thing to do. In both of these cases, it’s best for the player to emphasize a certain approach at the plate, so that they are more equipped to deal with major league pitching right away. They can also both stand to get stronger (especially Andrus). From the team standpoint, there is no need to rush either (but especially Borbon), because we are not in crisis situations at their spots (though I know that SS could be viewed as a crisis if the decision might be made to move Young over). But just as important, you have these guys under control for six years, and about 3-4 of them will be very affordable salaries. Why waste one of those on a player who really isn’t helping much but could be an enormous value in short order?

Having said all of that, I can see Borbon being pretty high on the call-up list next season, especially if a CF is needed (Mayberry probably still has him, if the need is more for a corner player).

Offense doesn't doubt me, but my first and primemost thing is defense and punt return and kickoff return

yeah I don't know about that.

I would have to see what happens with Byrd, Bradley, Cat first, and assuming two of them leave, what we do with Cruz and Mayberry before I could see Borbon on the major league roster to start 2009. I think we’ve got a pretty solid outfield with Murphy, Hamilton and Boggs and assuming we re-sign Bradley, so a lot depends on how we approach the Cruz situation.
