He got the W.
How can you ask anything more of him? Obviously it’s a success if he got the win.
Can you think of a better way to judge a pitcher than W-L?
Preventing the other team from scoring?
The offense won the game. I wouldn’t say that CJ Wilson sucks, but I’d say his future at closer could and should be in doubt at the moment.
by Black Francis on Aug 1, 2008 11:13 PM CDT up reply actions
Dude.
Wins and losses are how you measure a pitcher. Haven’t you ever read Baseball for Dummies?
By Joe Morgan?
CJ
is proof that W’s for a pitcher are meaningless.
Plaschke: Scioscia, the former Dodgers catcher, is the model manager who has created an atmosphere of winning.
Junior:It's that simple. Mike Scioscia brings a Glade Plug-In labeled "Winning™" into the clubhouse and everyone who breathes it in gains 15 points in average.
I think its reached the point
where its just time to pull CJ from the role.
its just gone on too long now.
hopefully he can restablish himself coming in to face mostly lefties, and compete for the role in spring training with frankie and such.
well, if they do pull him from it.
but… very fun win in the end. nice to see young players salty, boggs and murph rally in the ninth.

I missed the game

"Sooner or later, prospects kill you, because you hang onto them." - Greggo, 11/22/2005
pitching sucks
offense is good.
(repeat as needed)
the preceding post is not nearly as negative or insulting as you think it is
Pitching wise, Tommy Hunter pitched better than his line, CJ Wilson pitched as bad as his
Offensively, you still can’t keep this team down.
but really
Hunter looked decent, but just threw a few too many flat fastballs up in the zone and a few got crushed. It wasnt as ugly as the line.
The offense came back from the 6-0 hole hunter put them in with mostly singles in a big inning.
Then CJ blew it in the 9th giving up 2 runs.
Offense rallies again. Boggs misses a walk off 3 run HR by a few feet, they walk byrd.. and its murph lefty v lefty and the bases loaded. he slaps one just under rolens glove, we win.
the preceding post is not nearly as negative or insulting as you think it is
sounds like every rangers game lol
thx

Didn't see the game,
but nice to hear Murphy hit the ball to the opposite field.
I sure get tired of him rolling over on the ball and grounding out to second.

According to Mark McLemore...
...you throw out the lefty/lefty matchup when you are talking about David Murphy, because he’s been great against lefties all year long…
And Mark McLemore
is doing Rangers post-game shows…enough said.

Adam
he was 2-2 against lefties in Game-changing situations tonight, and it just seems like he often hits them in game-changing situations. Don’t get me wrong, I’m stats to the core, but I’d bet that Murphy is better in clutch situations than others.

clutch the same thing as performing under intense pressure? or is it something different?

obviously hes been quite poor v lefties.
but at least its not one of those .400 ops lines where he has no prayer of making contact lefty-lefty like vazquez has done in the past or something.
of course, i was very upset that bradley couldnt even pinch hit and it had to be murph…

Reminds me of Aaron Sele. At least that is my impression after watching him tonight.
Warner Madrigal makes Ezequiel Astacio look downright handsome.

Wow
Philly and Minn tied at 26. Still good none the less for the Rangers. No doubt they have won several games this year for the Rangers.
"Would you mind walking a time or two so I could drive in some runs"? Milton Bradley
A few dumb teams...
...have run on the Rangers and gotten burned. I’m sure that’s happened to MIN and PHI, too, but good God Almighty can that Rangers OF play. I bitched about that for years and then all the sudden they put together one hell of an outfield. I can’t think of one player who can’t run and throw, and some run and throw very, very well.
To take it a bit further, every position player on the roster brings something to the table. There’s nobody you can point to and say “he should be in AAA”. Not even the popular targets around here: Byrd and Saltalamacchia.
I know it’s a rebuilding year so I’m not going to complain about the pitching, but if they could pitch at even an average level this would be a very, very good team. Stating the obvious here but they fear absolutely nothing. They never quit.
Now if Washington can figure out how to run camp next Spring, maybe we won’t have to suffer through a third consecutive atrocious start and they really will compete. Realistically I think it’ll take them another year to really put together a pitching staff, but with the wild card who knows?
Anyway, it’s been a fun year.

Outfield Assists for the Rangers this year
Boggs: 5 (all in left, including tonight)

CJ Wilson rankings with MLB current closers
I did these myself so they could be off by just a little….
30th of 30 in ERA 5.28
29th of 30 in WHIP (JJ Putz was worse if he is still the closer in Seattle)
30th of 30 in Earned Runs
12th of 30 in save %
Ranks Among All Relievers
.468 Expected Wins added above average (41st)
.585 adjusted for lineups faced (37th)
1.460 Expected Wins added above replacement-level reliever (23rd)
1.574 adjusted for lineups faced (23rd)
That’s not good if it’s your closer.
Guardado, by the way, is 8th in WXRL, WXR and WXL and 7th in WX.

They come up...
...and they face lineups that are light years ahead of anything they see in AAA, too.
I really don’t have an opinion on Connor, but they’ve had a lot of injuries and lots of really young guys have come up to pitch. That’s not usually going to lead to good pitching. I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad idea to replace Connor with Hawkins given these circumstances, though.

You'd have to give me specific examples
Every situation is different. Again, I don’t have an opinion on Connor and am not exactly defending him. Just saying he was in a bad spot.
If you’re talking about someone like Volquez, I don’t think Connor was holding him back. If he would’ve stayed here he would’ve been good. The reason I always cited for his struggles was inconsistent rest between starts. That’s not the pitching coach’s area. Drawing a blank on other pitcher who’ve gone on to do well. I’m sure there have been some. We’re talking about the Rangers, after all. That’s been a problem forever.

It will get about 10 seconds and that will be that.

Like the move
Timing is weird, but it was obvious a move had to be made and in the grand scheme of things it didn’t really matter if the Rangers waited until after the season or not to do this. Connor and Chiti were dead men walking.
Yeah...the timing was definitely weird

I feel a little weird
Having posted only a day ago that the next smart move would be to shed Connor and Chiti.

Yes, dehydration
Caused him to feel light headed. TV mentioned light headed, post game, Wash said yes, dehydration.

I don’t recall him doing “great” things in a Red Sox uniform. Most Red Sox fans probably never even knew who he was.

According to WIKIPEDIA Andy Hawkins and Jim Colborn have both thrown no-hitters in the majors.
Very encouraging
Could the same be said for Connor or Chiti?

Rick Peterson please.
The first wave of young, talented, and homegrown pitchers is coming through. I think he’d be ideal.
Connor & Chiti
Just read the news. A bit surprising that it happened tonight, but I can’t say as I disagree with the moves. Our pitching has been atrocious this season, and I don’t think it’s entirely due to lack of talent.

To all of you Murphy/4th OF honks...
Please don’t change your minds and finally agree with the rest of us. It’s so much fun watching him repeatedly make complete fools out of you. Thanks.
There is no such thing as global warming. David Murphy was cold, so he turned the sun up.
How about
He’s a good 4th outfielder? It’s the major leagues. Four good outfielders is desireable if not a necessity. A 5th outfielder can very well be a lesser player with specific talents. It’s no rap on either to call Murphy or Boggs a 4th outfielder.

Good 4th OF absolutely are a desireable commodity.
I agree completely. That doesn’t change the fact that Murphy has shown he’s better than a 4th OF.

His #'s against...
LHP still leave much to be desired. The guy has done a lot better than I expected this year, no doubt. I hope he continues to improve and remove the doubts I have about him. That said, there is still some doubt there on my part that he can be a everyday COF. That goes for Boggs as well. I sure hope they both prove me wrong, because their defense in a COF spot is sure nice to have.

CJ as closer
Recently, Todd Jones lost his job as closer for the Tigers. His stats compared to Wilson’s:
Jones: 5.05 ERA / 18 out of 21 saves converted / 1.51 WHIP / .290 BAA / .803 OPS
Wilson: 5.28 ERA / 24 out of 28 saves converted / 1.59 WHIP / .261 BAA / .802 OPS
Very similar lines. Tiger fans have been calling for Jones (who also found himself on the DL) to lose his job but the argument was “Who is going to take his place?”. Sound familiar? While we may have no true closer, the team HAS to do something about this position. I’ve grown tired of watching CJ go out and struggle 4 out of every 5 times he gets on a baseball field.
I would just swap CJ and Frankie for the rest of the year. At least if he gives up a lead in the 7th, we’ll have a little more time to come back.
