Around SBN: Trent Richardson Interviews Fellow Brown Brandon Weeden

Monday morning stuff

Texas salvaged one game in Baltimore yesterday, as most of the lineup broke out of slumps at the same time. I'm sure that they're looking at this Boston series as a last opportunity to really become a part of the Wild Card race, and I expect that we'll see the games managed that way.

Milton Bradley is expected to play tomorrow, after a stomach virus took him out of his return to action yesterday.

According to the Star-Telegram, Hank Blalock may try to play in this series, and Brandon Boggs is having shoulder issues that could land him on the DL, with John Mayberry possibly making his first appearance on the roster.

Mayberry huh?

It’s amazing the number of rookies that have (or will) made their debut this year.

Injuries, illness

Wow, this is getting ridiculous. I think Mayberry would be the 51st or 52nd player used this year, maybe more. I remember hearing Nadel say some time last week they had used 50 players so far.

Random thought

If Edwin Jackson, TB’s 4th or 5th starter depending on where you place Sonnastine and who pitches in a harder division, had pitched 2/3’rds of an inning more yesterday, he would have had more innings than anyone on the Rangers staff. Pretty sad what injuries can do to a rotation…..

If Wilson has surgery to fix his bone spurs, I suppose they could put him on the 60-day DL.

He is having surgery this week, and still plans on hosting the House of Blues charity event.

"Stomach virus"

Do you think its the same “stomach virus” (pronounced in-juh-ree) that Wash claimed Blalock had last time? Seems to me the stomach virus excuse gets thrown out there an awful lot.

I particularly like this quote:

The Rangers are still one of the most popular and closely followed teams in Korea.

At least we are one of the most popular teams somewhere… Good to see that they are starting to capitalize on this. I think its far better to be one of the big players in a small market, like Korea, than to be a small player in a larger market, like Japan.

Holland before Feliz

Could Holland make it to Arlington before Feliz?

by octoberty on Aug 11, 2008 1:42 PM CDT up reply actions

IMHO

I think he will.

"An effortless 98" - Scott Gardner after Neftali Feliz's first AA pitch

by RangerMad on Aug 11, 2008 1:54 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't see that happening

Just by the way Feliz has pitched after completely skipping High A makes me think there is no way he will get skipped by anyone. Not that he will be the next guy called up but I don’t see Holland or Kiker or Beavan or basically anyone lower than him right now making it sooner. Holland would have to throw consecutive perfect games to start thinking about him ahead of Feliz right now.

by bigsteve on Aug 11, 2008 4:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Don't be fooled

by Feliz’s quick promotion. He still has a lot to work on. He has to work on his off speed pitches. He needs to change the arm slot on his curve. He can’t hold runners. How does he field his position? Feliz has a higher upside than Holland. However, I think Holland is a more polshed pitcher and will move quicker than Feliz from this point onward.

Depends on what you are talking about

If in a year or two the Rangers need a spot start then yeah i think Holland may get the nod over Feliz but if you are asking who i think will be the first one to come up and stake a claim to a permanent roster spot I think Feliz is that guy

What do they gain from leaving him in the minors? Wouldn’t he be a candidate to come up when the rosters expand anyway?

Im pretty sure Scott Servais

or someone in the Ranger’s front office was quoted as saying Mayberry would see Arlington this summer??

by octoberty on Aug 11, 2008 1:43 PM CDT up reply actions

No they aren't

The problem is if you decide to bring him up you pretty much have to keep him here the rest of the year otherwise you burn one of his options. Considering it has taken him this long to make it to AAA and be considered for the majors I don’t think you want to risk losing out on a potential entire year of development on a former 1st round pick. I was surprised they brought up Ellison last week with it being so close to September but I think it is almost a guarantee we will see him this year in Arlington

From Heyman's latest on SI

“Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe suggested that Rangers president Nolan Ryan will convince club owner Tom Hicks to spend this winter. And that may be so, but I’m told that what Ryan would most like is to convince Hicks to sell—that is, to sell the team to him. There is no evidence to this point that Hicks is interested in selling, though.”

Does Ryan have that kind of money lying around?

I would actually like this to happen. People around here seem gloomy about Nolan being part of the club, but the only thing he’s done has fire Connor and Chiti, which I’ve been yearning for for two years.

I really thought Boston would want TT over Salty, but they seem to covet Salty going back to last year with Atlanta. Will be interesting to see if they are willing to give up a top pitching prospect for either of them as the globe suggests. The winter meetings will be very interesting I predict.

Yep

I’m curious what the heck being a former player has to do with being an owner of a sports franchise.

There aren’t many examples- Mario Lemieux and Michael Jordan are the two most prominent I can think of- and while the Pens have done OK under Lemieux, the Wizards under Jordan were a joke.

On the other hand, anything that encourages Hicks to sell is fine by me. Granted, it’ll mean he’s likely more involved with my other club, Liverpool, but at least he would have the money to invest in it properly…

Barry

Not sure- I read today that the Reds are going to make one last run at him.

Honestly, I’d rather see the club go out and spend that 18 million pounds on a real left winger (Barry’s more a center mid who can play on the left) but I suppose signing an English national team player who links up well with our captain isn’t a bad idea.

"I dont care to debate with a troll." - Sharky

by RCCook on Aug 11, 2008 6:13 PM CDT up reply actions

From Rafa's comments

...and I really haven’t paid very close attention to Liverpool in the summer, but from some comments I saw from him recently I got the impression that he’s getting pressure to add English players. I’m kind of like you, I don’t really know how much of an upgrade Barry would be over Alonso, and it seems like a true winger would help more than adding another central player. Barry does seem like he could mesh with some of their other guys, and the Gerrard link would be cool, as you mention.

I’m waiting to see what DM Arsenal will add, and I’m a little worried about their CL qualifiers without one. I think they could get abused up the middle this season, and McLaren for one certainly would know that.
