Off day for the good guys today so lets get a minor league thread going instead.

The Shroomer has Kiker as being the starter for Bakersfield tonight and Henry for the AZL Rangers
Hodges is set to go in Frisco

Speaking of Main
Are the Rangers still letting him hit?
"Would you mind walking a time or two so I could drive in some runs"? Milton Bradley
Risk of injury
Main has stated his main thing to concentrate on is staying healthy for rest of season. Rangers were fearful of him injuring something on the basepaths.
i know about Beavan
but I was wondering whether you guys think Main starts next year at Bakersfield?

For those in the know
What has changed for Poveda, he seemed to have a miserable start in A+, yet 2nd half of year, he seems renewed and throwing great.
He was injured I believe
or at least coming off an injury
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
If it was injury
Then he should be up in time for playoffs in Frisco.
I think his peripherals
also showed that he was pitching much better than his ERA showed. In June, he struck out more a batter in each 4 PAs while having his best monthly BB rate at 6%. He had a .404 BABIP though and a 7.71 ERA.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Perhaps he is the "surprise"
Jamey mentioned in his upcoming rankings?
Time you enjoy wasting was not wasted.
Just a heads-up—I’m going to wrap up “In their Footsteps” this week and then launch a new weekly column for the Rangers MLB.com site in which I will rank the Top 20 prospects in the system and adjust the list weekly, as appropriate, with bullet point notes on each player. You’ll find at least one surprise high up on the list.
But the Top 20 feature won’t show up until August 21. While I have a pretty good sense of how that 20-deep list will look 11 days from now, the state of the 2008 season is not nearly as clear. The Rangers’ backs are against the wall, but they’ve shown us so many times in 2008, maybe more than ever before, that it’s in exactly that situation when the best in this club comes out. How this season is ultimately shakes out hasn’t been determined yet, but one of the ways it will be defined, no matter what happens from this point forward, is as one of the most resilient clubs in franchise history.
I'm going to bet
it’s one of the late round HS guys from this year who gets signed. Like Harold Martinez
I think
it’s Neil Ramirez
The Eagle has landed....
Thinking that he ranks him really high?

Jamey's #1
I’m picking either Arias or one of Boscan/Perez. He’s been high on Arias in recent rankings.
Holland will be high but just isn’t a dark horse anymore. He’s probably the ace of Frisco’s staff next year. Maybe this year.

No way that Jamey, or anybody else, would rank Arias anywhere near the top.

Um
I think Feliz is going to be everyone’s number one.
Even the relatives of other prospects are prolly gonna have Neftali #1.

Yet nothing on how much
Would be nice to know.
He was a 4 pitch guy coming out of HS
Plus fastball, plus curveball, avg slider, and avg changeup.
Can a 2 seamer really ever be a plus pitch?

Hate to beat a dead horse, and don’t want to get into the whole discussion again, but damn, how much brighter does the future look around here if we have the young lefty ace fronting the rotation?
A whole lot better.

yep
And if Danks would have gotten hurt the last two years here and McCarthy stayed healthy in Chicago and was fronting their division leading rotation you would be calling for his head for not pulling the trigger.
So I don’t see the point of constantly bringing it up.

well
No way of telling. I think he would be a very good pitcher if he were here, do you not?
Warner Madrigal makes Ezequiel Astacio look downright handsome.
maybe, I don't know
he was pretty awful last year. I think it’s awesome that he’s doing well, but much less awesome everytime he does well 10 or 15 people jump up and scream I told you so.
Yeah, I get where you are coming from
It gets frustrating to me when several posters, including a couple of the most prominent on the board, want to talk about the amazing maturation of a Ranger groomed ace, and there are always a handful that want to stick their fingers in their ears and jump around screaming, “I can’t hear you, it’s not JD’s fault, I can’t hear you, it’s not JD’s fault.”
Annoying. It’s topical, and people here will always want to talk about it.
Warner Madrigal makes Ezequiel Astacio look downright handsome.
I'm certainly not trying to deny
that he’s been very good. I said before that I will root for him, but the trade as was made was decent value for decent value. Maybe this is just a lesson that we can’t work out the developmental curves of young pitchers or maybe there is something wrong with our coaching staff. I don’t know
But the fact of the matter is when a guy goes from being god awful to excellent in the span of a year, and now prominently features a new pitch that he did not learn here, I’m dubious of his potential success as a Texas Ranger.
Maybe he would be excellent anyways, who knows, but I think it’s rather pointless at this time to rehash this trade for the 53rd time.
I think the cutter is a big part of what he's done
but he has also drastically improved his control, and last year his hr/fb was out of line at nearly 14%, while this season it is probably unsustainable in the other direction at 7.5%. Also his strand rate is pretty high at 76.5%.
So, I think he has made an adjustment, which he had a track record of doing in the minors, so I think that could be expected. And also he was pretty unlucky last year, and a little bit fortunate this year. I think if he continues to improve he could string together several years similar to this one.
Warner Madrigal makes Ezequiel Astacio look downright handsome.
He very well could
and that would suck for the Rangers. That said, McCarthy’s history coming onto the trade was of a guy who never walked anyone and stayed healthy throughout his career, and we all know how that went.
I think the trade showed two grevious mistakes 1) the mistake of believing the grass was greener on the other side and 2) believing we were ready compete when we clearly were not. It was a bad trade, let’s all agree to get over it and stop rehashing.
And his xFIP was 4.96 last year and FIP was 5.60 his RA was 5.96. Those numbers were very close to his ERA of 5.50. He might have made a lot of improvements this year, but last year was anything but a result of luck.
i cannot agree more
with this post. i like JD, but as of right now, the damage he has done to this franchise, at least at the major league level, still outweighs the good. he really needs neftali and andrus to come through in a major way, and harrison to at least stick in the rotation, to make up for the likes of Danks, A-Gon, Young (to a lesser degree) and Galarraga (probably not sustainable, but a hell of a run).
perhaps it is “beating a dead horse”, but it still holds true, and apologists cannot deny it.
and if they do try to deny it
you can feel free to sic them. The result of the McCarthy trade has been god-awful, as Danks turned out very well and B-Mac hasn’t and the San Diego deal was bad from the get-go.
But really, what is the point of talking about it again. Is there any angle that hasn’t been explored already? Does it make everyone feel better to rant and rave and whine about it?
yeah I think so
a LOT of people said “give the trade 2 years before judging it.”
well, it’s been about 2 years. time to judge…
but in all seriousness, I think it’s sad (and no knock on Brandon himself) that we have to wait another year or two AT BEST to judge this trade based on pure talent. I mean, will we ever get to see him fully healthy? and if so…If Danks goes on to post 3.00 ERA seasons and McCarthy pitches in Arlington compiling 4.00 seasons, how can we judge that? if they both put up 12 to 15 wins a year, but with that disparity in ERA, and say Danks strikes out a few more than Brandon…and honestly, that’s what I expect out of him best case scenario. I’m sure you can say Danks wouldn’t be a sub-3.00 pitcher here in Arlington, but I’d sure as shit like to see a young, Texas-grown lefty striking batters out.

Only thing to look forward to is having McCarthy out of ths system
Either with trade or draft picks, atleast no looking back.
That trade
What gets me about it was that it was just an unnecesarry trade. If it was made because McCarthy was a ML ready starter, were we really in a position to where we couldn’t wait on Danks?
Anyhow, yeah, dead horse.
Danks
Would he have ever learned the splitter here though?
This is the Texas Rangers, professional destroyers of hope, we're talking about. - BAC
Coulds and woulds
given how Mark Connor was apparently the anti-christ, I don’t know if Danks would be as successful here as he is in Chicago
Danks
would be on the 60-day DL with sprained hair or something if he was still here, and McCarthy would be a Cy Young candidate. We would have multiple posts every wondering why in the hell JD didn’t pull the trigger on that rumored trade.

pretty much
The guy has had to work with over 50 players this year due to injuries. Hes had to overextend his bullpen because of either injuries or shitty starting pitching. He has been given the youngest average aged roster in the majors. And yet at the end of the day he has taken a team that was well below .500 less than a month into the season and they are now a few games over .500 and depending on how this week goes could be playing meaningful baseball in September which we haven’t seen around here in a few years and damn sure didn’t expect coming into the season. So yeah for you to say his last months as manager are upon us is just plain dumb in my humble opinion. Couple that with a couple other debates I have had with you and you come off to me as just another kneejerking fan who doesn’t understand the finer points of the game. But thats purely just me. Have you checked attendance lately? This thing aint coming back as presently configured. So you think...
He takes over for a very bad team that is rebuilding and finishes last in his 1st year. Then finishes 2nd with a very young, yet talented team that is still rebuilding, but suffers a ton of injuries. Then he gets fired? I really don’t understand some of the logic behind you Wash haters. Yes the guy has made some bad in game decisions, but if you think he isn’t here next year you are dreaming.

I'm
actually not a Wash hater….
The guy cant get us out of the gates and another season won’t be allowed to be tossed down the drain after only a month of play. The risk is too great. Another abysmal start and the only people left in the stands will be Newberg subscribers, the cookie lady, and the family members of the next wave of kids that arrive for their debuts.

He's not
a top of the order guy, I don’t think. I think he becomes a power hitter who hits in the 4-6 range, depending on how good he gets.

why oh why will he be called up? Simply because he must be added to the 40 at the end of the year?

Who else?
Who else are we gonna bring up? Cruz is hurt which is the only reason Mayberry would get called up now. If Boggs goes on the DL and with Bradley not being able to play the field we would only have 3.5 OFs (Cat only counts as half because if I see him out there on consecutive days I may cry). Yeah the 40 does play a huge role and since in September he was probably getting called up anyway you can bring him up now and get an extra few weeks evaluation time. I see no downside really.

OK
Murph in AAA
24 years old/ 84 games/ .267/ .355/ .447/ .802 OPS
Mayberry Jr
24 years old/ 82 games/ .271/ .329/ .494/ .823 OPS
Murph played in the IL not the PCL so I don’t know exactly what that would do to his stats but both were first round picks who “underperformed”. If Mayberry Jr turned into another Murph I would be happy right now

He has hit 2 great months
at AAA, one horrid slump and a good start right now.
And he always crushes lefties. If we’re going with a Murph, Hamilton and Davis as our LF, RF, and 1B of the future respectively, Mayberry will be a very good contributer because he can spell all 3 of those guys. And do DH duty if absolutely need be. He’s not going to be a superstar, but he might very well be a good role player. And he’d be replacing Brandon Boggs, who is a role player.
You do the math.

Reed
Almost put Diamond/Reed in that last slot. I know the JD regime is high on Reed but his numbers have been so consistently mediocre. It would take grading him on that Cal League curve to promote him.
I’m so sick of the Cal League. If it can’t inflate Whittleman’s numbers to make people at least as optimistic as they are on Lemon, I mean screw the place.

it isn't that reed has been mediocre
it is that he’s been very good, and then he absolutely melts down for one inning and completely blows his line. he and phillips both are close to being very good pitchers, but 6 run innings can kill an ERA.
Have you seen his stats
through say his first 3 or 4 innings. He always seems to start off pretty well then just runs out of gas.

Reed
He was a college closer and he could just never take to starting. He might also have to add a pitch or greatly improve on one of his offerings to get through the order a 2nd and third time. Isn’t he currently a fastball/slider kind of guy?

Makes sense
Not to many starters get by with two pitches if they can’t have at least a passable third pitch to show hitters.

The Marlins...
"Sooner or later, prospects kill you, because you hang onto them." - Greggo, 11/22/2005
Reference
Salty this year: .235/.337/.335 – 23 y.o.
Miller this year: 5-9 with a 5.63 ERA after a 5.63 ERA last year. 100 IP, 4.2 BB/G, 6.7 K/G, average GB rate. 23 y.o, almost to the day of Salty’s birthday (their birthdates are 19 days apart.)
Both pretty disappointing.
But one's a pitcher
Honestly this seems like the sort of deal teams hate to make: My nascent bust for your nascent bust. The downside of seeing your guy go elsewhere and blossom seems to trump the idea of maybe turning that guy into someone else’s bust who might blossom here. It’s a fear thing, home dog.
