Tim Murphy interview

Interview

Tim Murphy on retaliation:

"It depends. Baseball is a funny game and you have to protect your guys. There are certain cases where it just happens. There’s no right or wrong way to answer this question, but it is just something that has to be done in baseball. You have to protect your own guys, so there are instances where stuff like that happens. Other than that, there’s not too much to it."

Curious to read your thoughts on Murphy.  I know he has a limited professional record but I'd like to hear if you think he profiles better as a starter or a reliever.  Also, where do you think he will start the '09 season?

Gracias.

Nice Interview

Murphy...

I don’t know a whole lot about the guy and I haven’t studied his stats by any means. But I watched him pitch a game for UCLA a few months ago and I was really impressed. He threw a complete game shutout and was always around the strike zone. Looked very poised on the mound. Looks like he pitched to contact but had good enough command of his pitches to get a K if he needs to. I remembered his name and when I saw the Rangers drafted him, I was pretty pumped. I think he’s got a decent chance to be a solid ML starter.

Nice interview.

It’s always great to hear what the players think about on the field and how they are working on things.

Murphy is LH Hudgins? or better?

Go Rangers!

Greatness, Jason

Jamey’s scouting report:

Murphy, the second lefthander in the Rangers’ draft haul, differs from Ross in that Murphy is a college pitcher, complements an average fastball (with arm-side sink and run) with a devastating breaking ball, and gets hitters out with an advanced ability to change speeds. He’s more of a pitchability type than Ross, though he’s had issues walking batters. In 102.1 innings this year, Murphy has walked 46 hitters (though he also punched 111 out and permitted only 83 hits). His workload and strikeout total led the Pac-10 Conference.

What Ross and Murphy share, according to Jon Daniels, is standout competitiveness on the mound. Murphy challenges hitters with his four-seam fastball and 11-5 curve, and showed an ability to get out of trouble that could bode well for a future as a reliever if he doesn’t develop adequately as a starter.

Murphy was a quarterback in high school, drafted in the 11th round in 2005 by the Angels as an outfielder. As a freshman at UCLA, he played center field but didn’t pitch, not taking the mound until his sophomore and junior years. He has a 10-10, 4.34 records in 27 Bruins starts and 10 relief appearances.

Early in the 2008 season, Murphy was projected to go higher than the third round, but he ran into command issues late in the season that reportedly impacted his draft position. He was Baseball America’s number 63 draft prospect, but Texas was able to get him at number 89.

My scouting report:
A former two-way prospect, Murphy’s competitiveness and athleticism are both strong selling points. His arsenal includes an 89-to-92 MPH four-seamer (though his velocity tailed off as the collegiate season wore on), a big over-the-top mid-to-high 70’s curve that seems somewhat comparable to Christian Friedrich’s looping 12-to-6 offering, and a solid changeup and slider.

Mechanical issues pertaining to an inconsistent release point have led to worrisome command problems, but should the Rangers promptly correct those, Murphy could move very quickly through the Rangers’ farm system, particularly if he is developed as a left-handed specialist.

Jason’s a believer in Murphy’s ability to emerge as a reliable starting pitcher, but I’m not quite so certain yet. Judging by Jason’s interview, however, it seems safe to say he’s got a good head on his shoulders.

Thanks

I should have a Neil Ramirez interview posted this week. I’m also going to be talking to Joey Butler, Clifford Springston and Edward Koncel. I’ve tried to get an interview with Matt West but he won’t call me back.

Thanks

for the tidbit on who is next. In terms of West, speaks volumes when a local guy doesn’t want to get an interview in.

Well, I'm not the biggest name

in the business. Perhaps he wants to aim high.

by jparks77 on Aug 13, 2008 4:04 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

He should be trying to rebuild his reputation any way possible

He was suspended 50 games, and with how many others on his own team that has done it, or in process. it would be rediculous for him to not have heard of you.

by gamerabcd on Aug 13, 2008 4:12 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

He should probably consider himself fortunate the Rangers didn't cut him right then and there

Daniels, as I understand it, was quite angry after learning of the situation.

And with an answer like this, I can’t say I blame him:

"I couldn’t tell you [the name of the performance-enhancing drug]," West said. "The name had, like, 50 letters in it, so I don’t know what it was. I was surprised. I was surprised because it was something in my system I didn’t know I was taking. Just a GNC product."

Really?

by jamcadbury on Aug 13, 2008 4:55 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

What's wrong with that answer?

You think he’s lying and that he really did a shit load of ‘roids?

Or you think it’s incredible someone would be so dumb as to take an over the counter GNC product that contained a banned PED?

I don't necessarily think he's lying

I do think it shows a disturbing level of ignorance on West’s part about what was going into his body, particularly for a player as highly regarded as he was at the time with a signing bonus worth nearly half a million coming into his possession.

The good news is that apparently, after a little coaxing on JD’s part, West finally came clean about what was going on. That shows at least some degree of accountability. But I can understand why the organization would be so incensed that something like this happened.

by jamcadbury on Aug 13, 2008 7:05 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

He came clean about what was going on?

What was going on?

If he wasn’t lying, then aren’t you saying that what was going on was that he was taking workout supplements from GNC or whatever?

If we assume that to be true, then I don’t think that’s a damnable offense. It’s kind of dumb since most everyone would figure you have to watch that shit with all the drug testing in baseball now, but he was an 18 year old kid. Obviously it sucks and it’s disappointing, but I’m not willing to kill the kid for one stupid mistake when I see no malicious intent.

West

Probably thinks all interviewers want to talk about is his past transgressions.

This is the Texas Rangers, professional destroyers of hope, we're talking about. - BAC

by nikpin on Aug 13, 2008 8:32 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Yep

That’s understandable. I was definitely going to ask him about it. I’m going to try and call him again today. If he doesn’t want to talk, I’m just going to leave it alone.

As I mentioned earlier, it’s not like I’m an established name. West might feel more comfortable talking to someone he feels he can trust. I can respect that.

FWIW

John Savage, the head coach of UCLA Baseball, posted a nice comment on Jason’s piece.

You’re big-time now, hombre.

by jamcadbury on Aug 13, 2008 4:52 PM CDT   0 recs

Murphy

I liked his answer to the question about which major league hitter he is looking forward to facing. The easy answer would have been A-Rod or some such but him saying the first Major Leaguer that he gets to face shows some maturity IMO.

by Chris Hanes on Aug 14, 2008 3:15 PM CDT   0 recs

Any idea when his first start’ll be?

Or is he headed for the pen?

Go Strangers.

by hightowersmith on Aug 15, 2008 2:51 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Sorry, I don't know for sure

He could slide into Quintero’s spot on Sunday if they want to keep him on a rotation schedule, but that is just a guess. He arrived late last night, so if his role is in the pen, he will be ready to go tonight.
