McCarthy is starting for OKC. So far he has pitched 2.2 scoreless innings with 1 strikeout and 1 walk. Not too bad for McCarthy.

"They don't have a radar gun but appear to have better velo than his previous starts." --The OKC radio guy.  Which is encouraging.

Frisco has an off day.

Swanson is going for Bakersfield later tonight.

Quintero is going for Clinton.

Tim Murphy is pitching for Spokane.

The Rheino is starting for AZL.

Tought I would put this up since the ML club is getting pwned.

EDIT: McCarthy is probably done

Good timing

Can’t wait to see great Boscan.

How long before

McCarthy is back in the big leagues with the way the rotation is looking?

by RangersOCD on Aug 12, 2008 6:50 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Thats a tough one

There are multiple things to consider. As of right now BMac has a little over 3 years of service time in the majors which obviously goes toward arbitration and free agency. As of now its not so much over 3 that theoretically next year you could start him in AAA and within the first month bring him up and you just bought yourself another full year of his services under team control.

But with the amount of injuries we have had we may be forced to use him and if he continues to pitch like he has tonight he will force himself up here.

Personally I would like him to stay down the remainder of the year and come up around mid April next year so that we have him for 4 more years instead of 3.

Totally agree

It would be nice to see him get it right in AAA and come back strong next season (with the bonus of the extra year of control).

That all said,

My groundball lover with a 3.18 GB/FB against RH. That’s delicious.

how often do groundballs go through the infield?

by Steal Home on Aug 12, 2008 7:30 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not sure what you're asking here

but a high ground ball rate from a pitcher is a really good thing. Ground balls occasionally leave the infield, but almost never turn into home runs.

Averaging 13.2 pitches per innings which is very good considering he was not very effective with that last year.

draft pick wise because those players can’t be traded for a year and we are only a few days away from that.

Parker

They would be nuts if they traded Parker in that deal. I would assume it is guy on the 40. Probably one of Max Scherzer, Micah Owings, Esmerling Vasquez, Emiliano Fruto, Juan Gutierrez, Jailen Peguero, Wilkin Castillo, Javier Brito and Josh Whitesell. Random guess by me but I would say Owings is one and Scherzer is not.

I think if you are on the

I meant draft picks

You can’t trade a drfta pick until a year after they sign so if they signed someone, say a 1st round pick, at the deadline last year which was August 15th that person couldn’t be traded until August 15th this year unless they are the PTBNL

Harrison/Mendoza

Harrison has the much higher upside and both have been about equal this year so he should absolutely get to stay up before Mendoza.

Padilla, Millwood, Hurley, Harrison, BMac

Hunter out of the pen so you don’t option him

Feldman on DL with tired arm

Mendoza either out of the pen or in OKC

My guess

Is since BMac pitched on same night as Feldman and we want to limit Feldmans innings he would slide right in there. Millwood could take Hunters spot and we move Hunter to the bullpen to conserve his innings.

Is giving the hitters confidence.

by gamerabcd on Aug 12, 2008 10:00 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't think this game gives the hitters an ounce of confidence.

It tells them they can come back from 10 runs down in the first and put 16 on the board, and their pitching still can’t win the game for them.

by LiamP on Aug 12, 2008 10:01 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

When a hitter is hitting he is not worried about the pitching losing the lead

They are trying to get hits, and this game where each batter got hits, there is definite confidence builder. Look at Byrd with 10 hits in 12 at bats.

If you played highschool baseball you would probly know.

In highschool you dont pitch every 5 days, and you play 40 games the most. In the minors they play 140 games. He needs to get used to pitching more and let his arm not fatigue to fast. If he was throwing his hardest he probly wouldnt be able to pitch every 5 days.

by mchang4 on Aug 13, 2008 12:53 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Right but

I don’t see how that leads to him seeing his velocity rise 5 mph just because he gets used to it. He’ll still have to pace himself and not just go out and throw his hardest (unless he’s relieving). I don’t know that being used to the workload equals drastically increased velocity.

Im just saying

If he doesnt throw in the mid 90’s next year, then we have a problem. But im pretty confident he will. I just think this whole year for him is Location and building stamina. But i could be wrong. Derek pretty much told me not to worry about his velocity, it will defintely come around.

Velocity

Beavan’s 19. He’s a boy. Weight training alone would make a huge difference in his physical development even if he started today, leaving aside any mental acclimation to full-season ball. He doesn’t sound like a shrinking violet, but he’s probably holding back a little to avoid fatigue/injury.

5 MPH might be too big a difference to expect, but how does that much velocity just disappear without ever coming back?

Lots of potential there for things to go wrong. The less said the better, stick to talking about yourself, Dutch.

We mostly just talked about our age stuff.

That's great

but he still told a complete stranger about a former teammate’s personal spending habits. That stranger then posted that info on a public forum where gossipy stuff like that stands a chance to get repeated.

I’m just saying that Holland needs to be careful what information he discusses and who he discusses it with.

Indeed

He should play it safe and just stick to making vague insinuations about Wilmer Font possibly being dead.

Funny

Apparently you are still bothered by that. That tickles me.

Yah, I'm terribly bothered by that

It was a joke, broseph.

But I forgot you take yourself too seriously to take jokes.

My bad.

Jparks

he’s kind of a big deal.

I don’t know if you’ve noticed lately.

Huh?

I never suggested I was a big deal. Not sure where that is coming from.

DIrk: Sorry. Long week of work. I apologize for not realizing it was joke. I can be quite stoopid.

I wonder how many ranger's scouts will be at the games

I read somewhere that the big-market teams are all there looking at prospects…

Teagarden

fans on a fastball away on a 2-2 count.

On a quick separate note

Japan and Cuba plays soon and the Japanese team features a lot of very good professional players, including starter Yu Darvish, center fielder Norichika Aoki and reliever Kyuji Fujikawa

by FirebatM3 on Aug 13, 2008 5:35 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Woah

Teagarden just nails the Korean leadoff man on a 0-2 breaking pitch at the hitter’s ankles.

One freaking motion, catch, transfer, HOSE. Beat the dude by 3 feet, and that guy is legitimately fast.

Darvish

hits low-mid 90s easily, throws a 81 mph compliment pitch, looks like a breaking ball

A Few Notes:
LHP Glenn Swanson went 6.1 innings and allowed two runs on seven hits. He struck out six. It was his first quality start since undergoing Tommy John surgery last year.

Good! Another good lefty prospect. Anyone have a scouting report?

Also:

LHP John Rheinecker made his first game appearance of the year, allowing a run on three hits in the first inning.

good

I thought he was out for the year. The Rangers bullpen could use a LOOGY.

Nolan Ryan should be the Rangers president, GM, manager and pitching coach.

Swanson

turns 26 next year and will likely start in AA. Unlike Diamond, has progressed remarkably a yr out from TJ surgery and has not lost his excellent control though he was giving up a lot of hits. Throws fb,cb, cu with cb being best pitch and fb not exceeding 89! Due to his age and stuff, I would guess he progresses to AAA more quickly as a lefty specialist. Threw a no-hitter his sr yr (5th yr senior, missing 05 due to injury)! Drafted 49th but probably signed for top 20 round money at least due to his excellent sr yr.

here is a link to a scout’s ink interview…
http://rangers.scout.com/2/644337.html

Rheinecker started his rehab about 2-3 weeks later than I thought he would. Had cleanup surgery on his TOS shoulder/rib on 5/23 but was supposed to be delayed only an additional 3 weeks. Anyone think he can still be th lefty specialist for the big club next yr?

by Goyogringo on Aug 13, 2008 12:47 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Swanson the prospect

I remember about two years ago some random site had him as the Rangers 10th best prospect and no one here seemed to even hardly know who he was let alone why he deserved to be ranked that high.

by t ball on Aug 13, 2008 1:01 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

He still doesn't deserve to be ranked that high

He is about to be 26 years old and profiles as a lefty reliever.

by uthornfan on Aug 13, 2008 1:02 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, yeah

now, after the last two years of system rejuvenation, he’s nowhere near the 10th slot, or even the 30th spot really.

Time you enjoy wasting was not wasted.

Rheinecker

So he has started a rehab assignment? This really sucks. This means that now in 30 days when his rehab stint is over he will have to be placed again on the 40 man roster. This could mean the difference between giving JMJ or Cruz a shot or optioning Rheino back to the minors

playing in the bigs

Both would require a 40 man roster spot to be called up in September or anytime really.

no my point was

that we don’t need them on the roster and they won’t get any pt because all of our of will be healthy by then. If Rheinecker is pitching well, he can actually contribute to the team as a left specialist, a role that he performed well enough before, whereas the other two really won’t.

Maturity

He really has learned alot from being batted around in Clinton this year. Highlights, wants to remain with the team in Clinton and win a championship. Not worried about fastball velocity, wants to continue improving especially on changeup. Seems velocity was lower since last summer, and was somewhat lost at what to do now with it being gone. Seems Rangers coaches calmed him down and gave him confidence in really developing as a pitcher. No real timetable for next year, just want to finish off this year strong. Limited to 70 pitches per start and so looking for more groundouts. Seems very team oriented, wished more questions about guys like Holland and Feliz and Beltre.
