In response to iorange55 re: phelps

He is nice to look at. But believe it or not, I have massive appreciation for his abilities as a swimmer as well.

Chris Davis is the only athlete I’m ga-ga over. And I honestly wish I wasn’t. It’s clearly shadowed my ability to claim I’m a real fan and not a fan girl.

I guess because I never expected to get this close at all, much less win this game. Madrigal pitched well (wish he had gone another inning) and our offense seems to have woken up out of its mini-slump, too. (Fair disclosure: My fantasy team is the Rangers lineup with two good pitching staffs)

That said, I hate Youkilis.

the preceding post is not nearly as negative or insulting as you think it is

by DShep on Aug 12, 2008 10:15 PM CDT up reply actions

Interesting

I was thinking this literally seals the deal that there will not be a trade for hitting any time soon. And I worry the pressure to get pitching will make JD make a deal that is not a good one.

That said, may as well get used to seeing some very good bats traded away for some pitching. People like Davis and Andrus and obviously any catcher will be fair game for arms.

And I also think Milton is gone too. Just can’t put the money to hitting with this literally pathetic pitching.

by atlantaranger on Aug 12, 2008 10:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Just saying....

you have to give up hitters that are potentially amazing for top notch pitching.

by bdavison94 on Aug 12, 2008 10:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Not sure how to respond to this....

Mostly because I don’t know where you are coming from.

Do you see FA’s signings as the answer? The pitching in the minors? A combination?

Do you see the Rangers as making zero trades for pitching that involves the hitters?

My point was, you don’t get to send the guys that you don’t really want (Mayberry for example) for top of the line pitching. I used Gold and Cruz as an extreme example. The point still stands. Unless you expect JD to pull off a steal or two then you better expect to give up guys that are painful.

by bdavison94 on Aug 13, 2008 12:15 AM CDT up reply actions

Mayberry certainly not

but Saltalamacchia or Teagarden or Ramirez? yes, they can get top of the line pitching, especially with the catcher dearth in the rest of the league.

Giving up someone like Chris Davis? That’d be dumb.

Give up depth from your position of strength to boost your position of weakness. 1B is not a position of strength since your best depth after Chris Davis is a fellow named Chris Shelton.

by LSJ on Aug 12, 2008 10:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Yep

Only untouchables would be Hammy, Kins, and the pitchers: Feliz, Holland, Beaven, Hurley types. It is going to be painful, but holding out hope for Sheets and CC is too risky as there will be 10 teams with deeper pockets vying too.

by atlantaranger on Aug 12, 2008 10:23 PM CDT up reply actions

no there won't

there will be 2 or 3, tops. YOu don’t improve your team by creating more holes in it.

2 or 3 Teams...

vying for CC and Sheets? Hope you’re right, but that would be a shock.

by atlantaranger on Aug 12, 2008 10:32 PM CDT up reply actions

run it in your head

no team is going to sign both, the only teams with sufficient and significant budget to do so are the NYY, Boston (though I don’t think they really have a need) and maybe a team like Angels (if they decline Lackey’s option).

The two Texas teams, maybe one of the Chicago teams, the two new york teams and the Brewers for 2 pitchers.

by FirebatM3 on Aug 12, 2008 10:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Ok

Not in my head, but I did find 20 teams with higher payroll than Texas so not sure why you lump the teams together that you did. It isn’t just CHI/NY/BOS teams with deeper pockets to date.

I think TEX goes for both hoping to land one, but getting a pitcher to want to come here and being highest bidder is unlikely (not impossible).

I just think they need pitching so bad. Trade chips are there to do just that. That’s part of why building the farm was so critical. And it is a pipe dream that they can get the pitching they need and keep all the bats we love.

Games like this just cement the fact that no hitting can cover up for a staff this dreadful.

by atlantaranger on Aug 12, 2008 10:50 PM CDT up reply actions

looking at the current

money of teams is an idiotic way of judging spending ability. I lumped the teams together that I did because they are the teams most likely to spend money on pitching this offseason. Yeah, teams like seattle has deep pockets, but they have neither the demand nor the willingness to give CC 150 when King Felix remained unsigned.

The reason those teams are listed is because those teams are the ones with both demand for a pitcher or ability to spend money on that said pitcher. Seriously, look at the rosters of teams and their minor league systems, while pitching is always in demand, 100 million dollar contracts will scare off a majority of suitors.

by FirebatM3 on Aug 12, 2008 11:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Idiotic

Interesting response to say that looking at the historical spending of teams is idiotic. Sure, Hicks should be able to spend like a top 10 team.

But with the exception of a couple Arod years, he hasn’t. And that is our reality until it changes. Not to mention payroll will already rise with no big contracts coming off the books and Young’s contract spiking up.

But, let’s just say you are right (which you definitely could be). Pinning the future on the team in the hopes of outbidding winning franchises in big markets with deep pockets is very risky.

Trading some beloved hitting is going to happen and I think it should. Will it be Davis? I don’t know. But it could. So maybe he is untouchable but that list would be very short with Hamilton and Kinsler and the minor league pitching.
