Minors 8/13
OKC game is already over. They won 4-2. Ryan Roberts had a HR and Arias went 2-5.
Holland is going to make his first start for Frisco in just a bit.
Phillips is going to be starting for Bakersfield.
C-Wun is taking the hill for Clinton. Said he is on a 75 pitch limit in the radio interview.
Nevarez is starting for Spokane. I have no idea who Nevarez is.
Shroom had De Los Santos for AZL but you never know.

Is anyone else having trouble listening to Clinton game?
Seems just timing out no matter what, yet boxscore seems still shows warmup too, is there a rain delay?

didnt like
how he said he’s learning to pitch without his Velo and that will make him a better pitcher when the velo comes back or a better pitcher even if it NEVER comes back.
It’s in the back of his mind that his velo might be gone for good.
It's easy to lie with stats, it's even easier to lie without them......

I just wouldn’t think he should be able to keep blowing his fastball by AA hitters. I would think they would be good enough to sit fastball and at least make contact with it.

Fastballs fastballs fastballs. 92-96, pretty evenly spread across that range, when I could see a gun.
Tulsa’s lineup is okay, not great, but those were some of the worst swings I’ve seen against them since Volquez. I’m obviously no scout, but I think he needs work on the other stuff. But imagine how good his FB is to dominate like that without doing a ton with his other stuff. Also, the two hits were after a horrible error by Tracy that should have ended that inning and after strike three (missed call).
Jamey and the gang were all there taking notes so I’m sure they’ll have plenty to say.

obviously. He wasn’t quite as dynamic as I expected, but he’s one of those guys who’s got everything under control. Threw out the only attempted steal that I remember seeing.
He looks a little stronger than I expected and hit the ball with a little conviction. I think he swung at two first pitches though.

Sounds as dominating as volquez
minus 2-3mph – lets hope they leave him there for a year and force him to develop above-average secondary stuff in order to succeed with the big club. It seems everyone gets excited about a talented pitcher and then the clamor begins to rush him to the bigs by fans and, as we all know already, by previous regimes. Sounds like he still has some work to do and, if tonight is any measure, he might have to be foreced to work on his secondary stuff like Feliz, because his fastball is so good. I hope that is the route that is taken for the sake of his development and i have confidence that is what will happen since they have taken that approach with Feliz already.

Let’s say that he continues putting up comparable numbers in AA as he has at both A ball levels. I would definitely put him as the #2 overall prospect next year.
by Chris Hanes on Aug 13, 2008 8:26 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Eh.
Assuming Smoak signs, what if he beasts in Bakersfield -> Frisco while playing the GG defense he’s capable of at first?
What if Feliz continues his development, gets promoted to OKC and does well there?
What if Beavan regains his velo while maintaining his command? What if Main stays healthy and crushes the cal league? What if Elvis develops some plate discipline and some semblance of power?
There are so many variables there. I’m of the opinion that Holland will eventually become our #2 prospect next year too (assuming he continues to be this great), but a lot of things could happen.
by LiamP on Aug 13, 2008 8:35 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
They better not allow Smoak to not sign, If his defense and hitting are as advanced as advertised I see nothing wrong with signing him to a major league contract.
by CRUSHDAVIS on Aug 13, 2008 8:39 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'd be shocked if he didn't sign.
ML contract or not.
Also, it’s not even certain whether or not he wants a ML contract. Callis said that Beckham, Alonso and Smoak were going for ML contracts, and Beckham just signed a non-ML contract rumored to be around $2.4MM. I’d take the ML contract thing with a grain of salt.

Then we should try getting rid of these older guys now before sept deadline. And bring up guys like Lizard, McCarthy and just let the kids play. We might lose alot more, yet then our draft position will be a lot better. Also, some of these college pitchers might have some injury and be out most of the year and drop due to it.

Wow...
5 fastballs at 97 mph, and 95 twice in the 8th. His velocity this year is crazy.
A 4:1 K:BB ratio. I love it.
I’m absolutely going crazy hoping that Feliz and Dutch are the 1-2 puch of the future for this team.
So Dutch is your big surprise huh? Can’t argue with that a whole lot, but this system is stacked right now. I can’t see the Rangers dealing Feliz, Davis, Andrus, or Dutch unless a proven ace is coming back.
Thanks for the report Jamey. I’m assuming you have seen quite a few minor league games so for you to say that was one of the 2 or 3 greatest minor league games you have ever seen pitched is just amazing. Damn I’m pumped now.

Inconsistent
is probably the best way to describe them. He threw a couple of each of them that were good pitches; I think it was the sixth that I remember seeing him mix in a breaking ball that was almost slurvier (moreso than most of his handful of sliders, as far as I could tell) that was very effective, then on the next batter he got a strike two on a very good change. But the reason that you didn’t hear much about them from last night is that they just weren’t big factors.

Hah
It’s like he said ‘f this I’m swinging for the fences’.
Offense doesn't doubt me, but my first and primemost thing is defense and punt return and kickoff return

On Smoak
Might have been posted elsewhere.
When the story about his uncertainty signing also mentions leaving media out of the negotiations, somehow it’s like a snake eating its own tail.

The Nationals front office really screwed this up
you can’t pick players with the intention of doing what it takes to sign them, and then tell your GM that he cannot go over slot. I still think Crow signs, as will the rest of their picks, but they will really look stupid if they don’t.

If they have 1 and 11 of next year's draft
I wonder if they’ll really be worse off.

Yep
because they will have no leverage with the pick they gain next year. If they don’t sign that player, they will not receive compensation. Agents will know this and take advantage of it. As a result, they will more than likely have to do a predraft deal to ensure the player signs, or reach and overdraft a player they are 100 percent sure they can sign. They would be better by signing Crow and then drafting Strasburg.
