Smoak's college coach expects a deal to be done

From the Greenville News:

University of South Carolina baseball coach Ray Tanner said Thursday afternoon that first baseman Justin Smoak and third baseman James Darnell haven't signed major league contracts -- yet.

But Tanner expects both to sign by Friday's midnight deadline, adding Smoak's might "go down to the wire" while Darnell could sign as early as sometime Thursday.

"Neither one of them have done their deal yet," Tanner said. "I think it's pretty close obviously because tomorrow's the deadline. I expect everything to get done, but nothing's done yet."

That is good news.

From the editor of the Rivals Baseball board....

I’ve been told by numerous great sources that Smoak fully intends to sign.

Always good

to have multiple confirmations.

Next question, how much?

Who cares?

honestly. You have him under control for close to the next decade. Whether its $5 or $10 million, its cheap compared to a long term contract to a stiff like Cat.

I'm sure the Russians felt there were WMD's in Georgia, and that it was a hotbed of terrorism.

Kendall

I have known and been friends with Kendall Rogers for almost ten years. He has great sources in college baseball, so my guess is his sources are close to the USC program.

Smoak

I’ve never been really that worried he wouldn’t sign, but getting rid of that little seed of doubt is huge. Sign Justin and Ross and this past draft will be a massive success (wish we could embed drops).

No news on the fliers we took in the draft, Armstrong and Martinez?

What's the rumpus?

by Hypo-Luxa on Aug 14, 2008 2:58 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Martinez

I REALLY REALLY REALLY want him to get signed. He’s the type of talent that if he went to college and came out junior year, he’d be a top 10 pick.

I’m sorry but if we’re giving a Korean guy 800k. I think we should be giving this guy 1.5M.

by Coolbean04 on Aug 14, 2008 3:01 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yep

If we just take the $4.1 we were willing to spend on Inoa, we could sign Ross, Martinez and Armstrong, as well as the Korean guy.

What would be a bigger coup?

Getting Smoak at our pick in the 1st round or signing Martinez (even at 1st round money)?

What's the rumpus?

Why do you say that?

he's loaded with tools

Given some time at a great baseball program like Miami, it’s possible that those tools come together. Or he could flop. There’s no way of knowing right now, of course, but I’d pony up some dough to find out if our minor league coaches can make it click.

Then ask yourself

why he was passed over in 18 rounds? It would seem that when toolsy and raw and backsliding in your profile with no polish then the jury is still out. I could care less if we sign him or not. In 4 years there will be plenty of guys in our system better than him. Giving him a 1mill bonus is just stupid.

yep

I also wonder if a guy who folded in front of scouts is really ready for professional baseball.

I havent heard a thing about any of the lat round guys

Armstrong, Martinez, Miller, Petralli and Charlie Lowell are all guys i would like to see get signed….

I am still mad that Nate Freiman is going back to Duke….It would be great to get another decent 1B prospect so we can drop some filler

It seems he made up his mind

about it awfully quick. Must be confident he’ll have a great senior year.

by FirebatM3 on Aug 14, 2008 3:54 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

or maybe he's smart

And realizes a degree from Duke is a valuable thing to have if he never makes it to the big leagues. Given the rate at which draft picks make the majors, I think that’s a pretty smart decision.

But I’m pretty bummed about his choice, regardless, because I’m a Rangers fan and not his father.

I think it was in the DMN

that Armstrong was going to go to Az State

Rudy's nephew

is the fellow going to AZ State

Sorry
The Rangers remain interested in signing shortstop Harold Martinez (19th round) and right-handers Charlie Robertson (29th round) and Jack Armstrong (36th round) but apparently have lost out on outfielder John Reuttiger (35th round). Reuttiger, a nephew of the man (Dan Reuttiger) who inspired the move Rudy, will attend Arizona State.

Got him confused with Reutigger

Looks like we won't have to worry.

Firebat3, looks like our discussion on an earlier thread about Smoak going back to USC is a moot point.

I am glad (should this rumor be true) that we got BOTH Smoak and Ross. That would help make both of the last two drafts a home run for the Rangers.

Maybe Freiman saw all of the 1b prospects in the system and decided to take his chances on being drafted by a better fitting organization.

Go Cubbies and Go Rangers!

yep

I think Frieman believes his senior year will be awesome. It better be because he has no leverage now.

by FirebatM3 on Aug 14, 2008 4:16 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

agreed

and even if he has a great year, why would a team draft him early? he’s a senior. no reason to blow my wad on him when he’s doesnt have a choice.

Martinez

I think I would bite the bullet and go for the home run by throwing some money at Martinez. Tough call. Definite potential
