Chris Davis
Third base seems to be the weakest position in our farm system and I don't think that the expense of a free agent third baseman is worth it. I do not really know what type of third baseman that Chris Davis was but after seeing him play very good first base defense, Could he ever move back over there if and when Smoak, if he signs, would be ready to take over. If Smoak has GG potential at first then he should likely play first and that would likely leave Davis at DH, and I just think it would seem like a good idea to have him at least work on third again. Could anyone tell me the kind of 3rd baseman that Davis was.

Davis
If it appeared he was a viable long-term solution at 3B, he most likely wouldn’t have been moved back to 1B this spring.

Was there much of an option in the minors a 1b back in Spring training either though. Wasn’t Metcalf thought of fairly highly and they did expect a healthy Blalock.

I can't imagine Metcalf was thought of too highly
He hit pretty well in 2005 in A ball, but since then, he has not shown that he can hit at any of the levels he has played at.
good glove
no hit

Metcalf
I don’t think he’s ever been viewed as more than a potential one or two year stopgap solution until someone better comes along.
by Adam J. Morris on Aug 15, 2008 11:54 AM CDT up reply actions
Maybe
but wasn’t his move to 1B a direct correlation to the loss of Tex and the weak candidates we brought in to replace him? If Tex was here he’d still be at 3B, wouldn’t you think?
Davis may never be a great 3B, but if he can hit in the 4-5 hole legitimately, wouldn’t you take a lesser defender at 3B?
What's the rumpus?
It depends on how much lesser
If you are talking about just below-average, probably. If you are talking about Ryan Braun/Butch Hobson bad, probably not.
It also gets back to the issue of the Rangers building a groundball staff. If you have a high-K/fly ball staff, like the Cubs built a few years ago, then you can live with a crappy infield defense more readily. But having a terrible defensive infielder with a low-K, groundball staff is a problem.

is he worse than ramon v?

The way Ramon has been playing the last month
no one is worse than him.
building a staff
It looks like we’re building staff that gives up a ton of runs. They don’t seem to care whether it’s ground ball or a fly ball as long as a run scores as a result.
But having a terrible defensive infielder with a low-K, groundball staff is a problem.
but it has been a problem since we acquired Sori 4 years ago. whats been done to fix it?

Infield Defense
How would this infield be in 5 years?
3b – Davis
SS – Andrus
2b – Kinsler
1st – Smoak
Andrus is suppose to be a defensive whiz, Kinsler can be (don’t through his error stats at me) a gold glover and Smoak is suppose to be a Gold glove type. Couldn’t we live with Davis at 3rd if he keeps hitting?
Let’s Max DH or Young DH or play left field.
Seems alright to me

I think you'd be better off
putting Davis in RF and finding a better 3B.
Time you enjoy wasting was not wasted.
Sounds Good
Crush in the outfield would be fine. With Hamilton and either Borbon or Beltre the outfield would still be above average. If Carlos Lee, Manny and Adam Dunn can play outfield, so could Davis.

i think RF...
…is the destination of hamilton sooner than later… its pretty well understood he can’t physicaly stand up to a full season in center…. plus we have bourbon[for better or worse] coming up in a season or two anyway…. to take over some of the load…

Not so sure...
about him not being able to play CF physically. This is the first full season he has played in the majors. I think he could play CF. The problem is his bat is so valuable and he is a plus defensive COF and the Rangers probably won’t risk leaving him in CF long-term. I’m fine with him going to RF or LF, but I don’t think it’s fair to say “its pretty well understood he can’t physicaly stand up to a full season in center”.

hmm
it’ll be more like:
1st – Smoak*
2b – Kinsler
SS – Andrus
3rd – FOTF
DH – Davis
*if the monster signs
leaves no space for maxram unless davis/smoak/maxram develop a split platoon problem…

Smoak love
makes me want to puke. I serioulsy think he might be overrated. Hell what do I know. I picked my boy Johnny Danks to win one of the best pitchers in the AL this year

MY
What do you do with Young in 2010 when Andrus take sover at SS?
Nolan Ryan should be the Rangers president, GM, manager and pitching coach.
supposedly pudge used to hit 96 mph as a kid
but his pop wanted him to catch b/c he would play everyday and be less likely to be injured.

Where’s Sharky when you need him? This comment would trigger 6 posts (all replying to himself) about how LSB wants to trade prospects just for fun

Sharky was all for trading prospects
he just hated trading veterans.

IMO
Chris Davis looked great when he played 3rd for those 2 games
Tommy Hunter will be the best pitcher on the Rangers for the next two years
Davis could probably play third ...
and I expect he could improve his defense sufficiently so that his incredible bat would more than outweigh any runs he gave back at third. But I think he’s got the makings of a very good defensive first baseman. Realistically, I think you end up, maybe as early as next season, with Andrus at short and Young at third. I would imagine that when/if Smoak is ready, you may see Davis shift to RF or, if Davis is still dominant, you may see Smoak shipped for a very good arm.
Either way, I hope to hell they hold on to Davis. I’m convinced his bat could end up making Tex’s Texas numbers look pedestrian by comparison.
yep
he can play 3B and he can play some some OF too. Hell Chros Davis is so going to be the best come 2009

Question
I haven’t followed Whilttleman this year, but most of you guys say he’s gone backwards and might not be the future at 3B. I was wondering, whats been the probelm? Has it been hittinh? Fielding? Or pretty much everything?

He draws walks
by the ton, but he’s super streaky as a hitter. His defense is terrible.

I don't want Davis...
back at 3rd. It would just be for 1 year ’til MY took over there in 2010 when Andrus is ready. Keep him at 1B and when Smoak is ready then decide if he can play RF or if he will DH and occasionally play 1B.
