Way OT: Desert Island Albums
Well it is another boring Friday where I am trying to avoid as much work as possible. On the Rangers front, I don't expect much to happen today until 10:59 when some news on Smoak/Ross breaks. That is why I decided to post my 10 "Desert Island Albums," and challenge you to do the same. This isn't supposed to be the "best" or even your favorite. But if you were going to be stuck on a island with only 10 albums, which ones would they be. This gives us an opportunity to put our musical taste out in the open. Several people here have had some musical bickering, and this provides us with a nice reference. Who knows, maybe someone you debate with constantly will have similar taste in tunes. A few guidelines:
1. No compilations or live albums. If you like an artist that much you should be able to pick out a studio album. I understand there are some bands that are better live, but it makes the exercise a bit more challenging.
2. Multiple CD albums are allowed, but lets try not to get too carried away.
3. One album per artist. Solo material or different bands are allowed. Ex: The Beatles and Lennon.
And on that note, my list. List is in alphabetical order.
The Beatles - The Beatles [White Album]
Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks
Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run
Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experienced?
Neil Young - After the Goldrush
Pearl Jam - Pearl Jam
Radiohead - OK Computer
Tom Waits - Closing Time
The Who - Quadrophenia
Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

NIXON: NOW MORE THAN EVER
great album
one of Parliament/Funkadelic’s great albums. A lot of their albums had great songs, but not a full album’s worth…Maggot Brain and One Nation under a Groove being exceptions
What's the rumpus?
Here's mine
1. Beatles – Revolver
2. G. Mahler, Symphony No. 9, Chicago Sym. Orchestra, C. Giulini, cond.
3. R. Strauss, Der Rosenkavalier, E. Kleiber, cond.
4. Beatles – Abbey Road
5. Beatles – Sgt. Pepper (can’t do without A Day in the Life)
6. Beatles – One (only way to get all the singles not on albums)
7. Mozart, Marriage of Figaro, J.E. Gardiner, cond.
8. Robert Johnson – King of the Delta Blues Singers
9. Bruckner, Symphony No. 9, Chicago Symphony, C. Giulini, cond.
10. Beethoven, Symphony No. 9, J.E. Gardiner, cond.
I could easily make a list of 1000.

Beatles One
I like the Past Masters albums far more for their singles (get some of those obscure, even for Beatles, B-sides). Though you’re better off taking the Blue and Red Albums if you’re just going to take a good compilation.
Lets play this game differently – If you had to leave one Beatles album behind – which would it be? Probably Beatles for Sale…
Depends on what you mean.
If you’re talking about any album issued, then it’s easily some bullshit American ripoff like “Yesterday and Today” or “Beatles VI”.
If you’re talking “canon” stuff, then it’d be close between “Beatles for Sale” and “Please Please Me”, in which case I’d probably agree and ditch “For Sale” All the originals are great, but the covers bring it down for me. I do like the slight modifications they made to “Words of Love”, though.

I only go by
the original British releases. Definitely Beatles for Sale in that bunch. Mr. Moonlight is terrible, can’t understand why they didn’t put Leave My Kitten Alone on there instead.

There is some good early beatles stuff
Its just different than their post-Help albums. I can see why some people don’t like it, but the more I’ve listened to With the Beatles and Hard Days Night, the more I realize how good these guys were. Taken in the context of other music of that era, I’d almost say that the Beatles first several albums were their truly revolutionary ones

NIXON: NOW MORE THAN EVER
Hmmm....
I think that there are lots of older artists whose stuff only really skews towards compilation albums, as the albums were nothing more than compilations of singles. But regardless…
1. Social Distortion – S/T
2. Johnny Cash – Unchained (wouldn’t be my pick for him if compilations were allowed, but alas…)
3. Curtis Mayfield – Superfly
4. Prince – Purple Rain
5. Michael Jackson – Thriller
6. Warren Zevon – The Wind
7. Jay Z – The Blueprint
8. Murs & 9th Wonder – Murs 3:16 – The 9th Edition
9. Otis Redding – Otis Blue: Otis Redding Sings Soul
10. Ryan Adams – Gold
With compilations allowed, I’d for sure include Al Green, probably Marvin Gaye, something else from Cash, and probably Cheap Trick’s Authorized Greatest Hits (love CT, but they’re really a singles band) and one of the newer Eels compilations.
I'm not going to nitpick
It was more of a matter of avoiding 10 “Best ofs…”
Good choice on the Blueprint, great album.

Manic Street Preachers – Everything Must Go
Depeche Mode – Music for the Masses
U2 – The Joshua Tree
Smashing Pumpkins – Siamese Dream
Pulp – Different Class
Stone Temple Pilots – Core
Beatles – Abbey Road
Oasis – Definitely Maybe
The Clash – London Calling
The Stone Roses – The Stone Roses
Well I can pretend to be Britney Spears. I'm already standing in urine and I'm with someone I don't like.
Here we go
Buddy Rich and Maynard Ferguson – Play Selections from West Side Story and Other Delights
Eric Clapton – Unplugged
Genesis – Trespass
Pink Floyd – Meddle
Steely Dan – Pretzel Logic
Warren Zevon – Stand in the Fire
The Beatles – Revolver
Radiohead – Amnesiac
Nintendo (for lack of a better choice) – Mother 2: Gyiyg Strikes Back
The Smashing Pumpkins – Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
Heh
I saw Maynard at my high school my freshman year. I was a trumpet player back then, so I thought he was some sort of god. But then I realized he was playing high schools and his head looked like it was about to explode.

I've never had a similar experience, sadly.
I played french horn in high school. There aren’t exactly a lot of famous touring horn players.
I imagine that even being a great trumpet player means you have to find a lot of work in between bigger concerts, soundtracks, etc. There are a lot of trumpet players in the world.
Well
Keep in mind this was only 6 or 7 years ago, when he was at the end of his career (and life).

I also played trumpet in high school, and I was in the jazz band as well as the concert band. The guys (and the trumpet section is probably 98% guys) were just in AWE and trying to imitate him all the time.

Jazz band was fun.
Regular band blew for the most part, but I’m sure that was owed a great deal to my individual circumstances, rather than a general rule.

Ditto
I still remember playing the Jon Faddis CD for the first time and my jaw dropping at his double c going on forever. Check out Into the Faddisphere sometime if you haven’t already. Even more amazing than his ability to play notes pianists have to reach for is how fat and rich his sound is in the low and middle registers as well.
Time you enjoy wasting was not wasted.
Beatles – Abbey Road (Revolver is close, though, like tball, I’d probably take more than this…)
Beach Boys – Pet Sounds
George Harrison – All Things Must Pass
John Lennon – Double Fantasy
Harry Nilsson – Nilsson Schmillson
Pink Floyd – Animals
Bob Dylan – Blonde on Blonde
Carole King – Tapestry
Nirvana – Nevermind
Willie Nelson – Red Headed Stranger
Forgot Pet Sounds
Might have to throw out John Wesley Harding for that one.

Couple of these have been listed already.
I didn’t really approach this completely from a “10 favorite albums” standpoint. For example, I like listening to Girl Talk while working out, so I put that on here because I would hope to stay in some sort of shape. Any time my friends and I do this the critique levied against me is usually that I think about the “island factor” too much.

Apropos to this thread: Jerry Wexler, famed record producer, dies at 91
NEW YORK (AP) — Jerry Wexler not only coined the phrase rhythm and blues, the legendary music producer was one of the key architects of the genre. He revolutionized popular music with seminal, superstar-making recordings of acts such as Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles and others.
But the genius of Wexler, who died Friday at his Sarasota, Fla., home at 91, was not limited to just one style of music. Over his decades-long career, he would create varied soundscapes that touched just about every kind of listener, from his work with Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson to his masterful recording of Dusty Springfield to his work with pop and rock acts like George Michael and Dire Straits.
He also helped build one of the most influential labels in pop, Atlantic Records, which was the home of Franklin, Charles, Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones. He was named to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.

Yes, all of those are country. Take your best shot.
We need to hire Chuck Norris to kick the ass of any Ranger fan caught booing one of our young pitchers at the RBiA.
Not quite
Willie, Cash, Waylon, Hank, Buck Owens, etc. are country…
This… is something else entirely
Well yeah, if you want to be a hard-nosed traditionalist...
Which I’m not, obviously. I admittedly really don’t have the ear for Hank Sr. and Buck Owens (to be honest, I find them kind of grating). I’ve got some of Willie and Johnny’s stuff though.
That’s not saying I’m a fan of the mainstream “pop country” though (such as Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, et al) – what I’ve got up there is mainly alt country (or country/rock if you prefer), which is actually a lot closer to that old style country than half the mainstream stuff these days. In fact, those last three are just throw-ins because I couldn’t choose two of the same artist.

Junior:It's that simple. Mike Scioscia brings a Glade Plug-In labeled "Winning™" into the clubhouse and everyone who breathes it in gains 15 points in average.
The Blue Album
Barely missed my list. Don’t care much about Weezer otherwise, save a single here or there, but I really like that album.
Perfect tag
If you’re on a desert island, good music and steady doses of CHoP will suffice.

Yeah
Took a little hiatus during the trade deadline — avoid the diary flood.
It’s easy to overpost on LSB, as it is.

Spoon
I really like Spoon, but Gimme Fiction I find relatively weak. Good, but I’d rather have Girls Can Tell or Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga. I saw them play a free show in Atlanta a few years ago, and they were booed because no one knew their songs yet, but Britt Daniels really rocked out with the end of Mathematical Mind.
A lot of people feel that way.
I thought Gimme Fiction though was so fluid all the way through, like they wrote it that way.
It’s really hard to pick one out of Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, Gimme Fiction and Kill The MOonlight.

If you’re on an island, you’d want what’s important to you, not what anyone else would like. I’d swim to another island, though. :)
Time you enjoy wasting was not wasted.

I doubt you’ve heard most of those. Can’t knock ’em til you try ’em.
