More Coach Tanner...

University of South Carolina Coach Ray Tanner on Justin Smoak signing with the Rangers:

"It's going to happen. But has it happened? No, it hasn't happened yet."

http://www.greenvilleonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080815/SPORTS0102/808150357/1004/NEWS01

Hmmmm........ 75 words you say? Well, I'm thinking about changing my User ID. I think that using my real name, as I'm currently doing, doesn't really work well for message boards. You need to use a pseudonym that's clearly made up and just over-the-top asinine. You need something like "Jack Nicholson 1974", "thedirkatron", or "Adam J. Morris".

Any ideas?

Perhaps

we should make this the catchall signing thread.

Worth a shot...

From Richard Durrett:

“Smoak wants above-slot money and the Rangers are probably willing to do that. But they aren’t willing to break the bank.”

http://rangersblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2008/08/draft-pick-update.html

Watching a player hit into a double play. A fan's delight. It's the only time in professional sports where you can sit on your couch, out of shape and drinking, and say, "Yes, I could have done better."

I guess I can see their point on Smoak

Going over slot is one thing, but devoting a 40 man roster spot when they are over a barrel already has to hard to swallow. But I gotta say, after this week, they have to sign him. We have got to have a little bit of good news in this waste land of a week.

How

do you change your name?

by meatbonelefty on Aug 15, 2008 2:29 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

We're not in that bad a 40 position

We have quite a few guys who would most likely pass through waivers and we wouldn’t lose and even if we lost them it wouldn’t be that big a loss. Guys like Metcalf, Rheinecker, Murray, Loe, Ellison. Could one of these guys turn into a good player…sure. But I can almost guarantee you Smoak is better than every single one of them. So if the rangers truly feel like he will be ML ready within 2 years I would be fine offering a ML contract.

i get your point

but letting metcalf go is courting disaster with blalock in an option yr (and maybe not playing 3b FT), vazquez a free agent and none too happy to lose PT to the syndrome-ladden Blalock, and Duran a rookie util guy who only started playing 3b last winter…

Matusz signs ML deal

via mlbtraderumors.com, says the Balt. Sun., for $3.2M. Doesn’t seem like too much money for the 4th pick, but it sure seems like getting a ML contract is the hot trend.

JD via DMN
Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said about 30 60 minutes ago that the club is closer to signing LHP Robbie Ross than they are 1B Justin Smoak.

That doesn’t mean deals don’t get done with both of them. “We have a player who wants to sign and play for us and we want to sign him,” Daniels said. “You’d like to think you could come to some sort of agreement.”

Do you think giving the media bloggy updates

is a negotiating ploy? Why not just announce the verdict when it happens…? It’s always the same thing: we like him, he like’s us, were engaging intensively blah blah…

by Goyogringo on Aug 15, 2008 3:29 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Good thing is

Smoak and Ross have the same agent, so JD only has to deal with one guy today.

Dumb ass question

But what’s the cache of getting a ML contract? Is it because the salary is ML level as opposed to MiLB level? If that’s the case, can’t you just provide a big bonus and call it good? Why do people insist on being on the 40? It doesn’t change the arbitration clock.

Nothing pithy here. Please move long.

Options

You only get so many options before you have to be released (I can’t remember how many).
Every year they’re on the 40 man but not in the major leagues is another option wasted.

by cjcheng on Aug 15, 2008 3:35 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sure

And I think it’s three options but it’s not like he’ll be a FA or arbitration eligible sooner. I just don’t see why it’s so important.

Nothing pithy here. Please move long.

It means you can't be kept in the minors as long

meaning you have to be in the bigs for good by a certain date, meaning that in a lot of circumstances it very much does end up accelerating how fast a player is arb/FA eligible.

Speaking of options...

I may be mistaken, but hasn’t Scott Feldman been optioned a crazy amount of times, like 8, the past few years? How is that possible? (seriousness, not just rhetoric)

You can be sent

down to the minors as many times as they want each year. You only use one option each year.

Options

You only use one option on the player per year no matter how many times he is called up or sent down.

I've always assumed

that there are pension/benefits perks that go along with the ML deal. You’re set for life even if you John Daly all your dough away. Don’t know that fer sure tho’.

by shroomer on Aug 15, 2008 3:51 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think there is...

On top of the pension you also get a higher minor league salary when you are on the 40 or so rumor has it.

Question

Can the Rangers give Smoak a clause that ensures that they’ll add him to the 40 at the beginning of next season, as opposed to immediately?
