Heyman's article
There was an interesting article by Heyman on mlbtraderumors.com.
He predicts what the salaries will be for the top 7 FA's this year.
1. Teixeira - 168M - 8 years - 21M average
2. Sabathia - 150M - 6 years - 25M average
3. Manny - 75M - 3 years - 25M average
4. Dunn - 70M - 5 years - 14M averge
5. F. Rodriguez - 60M - 4 years - 15M average
6. Sheets - 51M - 3 years - 17M average
7. Burrell - 48M - 4 years - 12M average
For the most part, I think those are solid predictions. I would definitely give Sheets 51M over 3 years. I also think Burrell at 12M a year average is a steal too for 4 years. I think he can be a 30+ homer guy in Texas. I also think Burrell is underrated because people fail to see his OBP. He has posted at least .389+ OBP the past 4 years. I think having Burrell and Bradley in our lineup with high OBP will be amazing. Burrell's OPS of .893+ the last 4 years is nothing to sneeze at either.
Now the next question, would you give CC 150M over 6 years?

Why would we need Burrell?
If we resign Bradley why would we need Burrell? We already have Hamilton, Murphy, and Boggs in the OF. After a full year removed from ACL surgery Bradley should be ready to play the OF whenever needed although i think he will primarily be a DH. Byrd is under team control and for a couple million dollars is a good investment. Then you got JMJ and Borbon who would be in the minors but ready to come up next year, Borbon not until mid season at the earliest.

well...
with that logic then there really isn’t any need for Bradley either. With Max Ramirez ready next year, we could easily have our full time DH with the OF you mentioned.

Except for the fact that
This offense looks very mundane without Bradley. He’s been one of the 5 best hitters in baseball.

Yep
A feared hitter behind Hamilton is the difference between good and great for this offense… If we can get him somewhere around 3/30, I’d do it. It’s not looking like Chris Davis is ready to be the man in the 4 spot just yet.

nobody...
is disputing how good Bradley has been this year. The point is that Burrell would be an upgrade over Murphy/Boggs in the OF just as Bradley would be an upgrade over Ramirez or whoever else plays DH. Not saying that I would sign either of them, but each would upgrade what we would have going into next year.

I won't lie
If it came down that we signed Manny 4 yrs./100 mil, I’d be excited. I mean, after we aquired a front end starter, of course.

We could just as easily let Bradley walk, get two picks in the draft, and sign Burrell.
I think he is the safer bet out of the two players.

or
let him go, take the picks and just insert Max as DH.

But wouldn't Burrell play the outfield?
Max can be the DH but Im sure he is gonna struggle some. A bat like Burrell could easily be plugged into the DH slot if MAXRAM falters.

Hamilton protection...
If Chris Davis can protect Hamilton than that could work, but right now it doesn’t appear he is ready to handle that.

I'm not sure I'd want
Davis right behind Hamilton. A good lefty reliever would kill us.

My lineup of the future
Would have Hammy, Maximus, and Davis in the 3-4-5 slots. Damn, I can’t wait till that comes to fruition, that’s gonna be a badass lineup.

I'd like that also...
a good RH power bat behind Hamilton (assuming Bradley is not here long term) is crucial.

Im saying...
It isn’t just about what he brings on the field, but rather the money he will bring in from ticket and merchandise sales that will land him a bigger contract than me might deserve ‘stats’ wise.
by tyd3311 on Aug 15, 2008 5:14 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Burrel is just having a good contract year
If you look at his stats, and predict them out over the whole year, only his RBI’s, an overrated stat, and his OBP, are lower than they normally are. There’s no need for him right now because you still have Bradley at DH and Hamilton, Byrd, Boggs, and Murphy. Plus, he is about to become 32 and age is going to start to play a factor.
To the 2nd part of your question, I would be cautious giving CC that much money because of how many innings he’s thrown throughout his career (right now without counting what he’s going to throw the rest of the year, he’s averaged 199 innings per year), but if we can’t get Sheets, I think I would have to strongly consider giving him that much.

What are you talking about?
His stats have been solid the past 4 years, solid OBP and OPS.
by Coolbean04 on Aug 15, 2008 3:00 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Burrell
He’s insanely consistent- you can count on that guy for a .390-400 OBP and .500-plus SLG every year.
Fantasy baseball analyst Ron Shandler gives out a “Reliability Score” for every player in baseball in his annual Baseball Forecaster book, based on numbers from the player’s past three seasons. A zero means a completely inconsistent player; a 100 score means the player has pretty much put up three straight identical seasons. Burrell’s score this year was a 99.
I’m not necessarily advocating signing Burrell, but if the Rangers want to pursue a slugging OF/DH in free agency if they don’t re-sign Bradley, I can’t think of anyone who’d be higher on my list.

As someone who consistently
targets burrell in fantasy leagues with the walk stat I cant agree more. He is very steady, provides great pop, and would be another guy to wear down pitchers the way bradley has. honestly id rather have burrell than bradley because let’s face it bradley has not proved he can remain healthy through the course of a season. the downside is id be hesitant to give him 4/50 if that inhibits the rangers over the next few years from going after a front-line starter or being able to extend the slew of young talent we have rising through the system.

If you can get a guy like Burrell for that price you do it no matter what
and then if you need to free up some money you can deal him no problem to clear some room.
Burrell is good.

Give him a vesting 4th year option, at $20mil, based on IP. Of course on his side, make him happy with a $5mil buyout.
Steep? Hell ‘ya, but prolly a better risk than someone like CC, let alone Millwood’s deal.

How old is Burrell now?
Like 33? I don’t think the Rangers need an OFer enough to pay that, and I agree it’s too low. And Sheets will get more with the paucity of quality starters available this winter.

Years
Yeah, the number of years seems a bit low for those two players. Maybe if they tacked on some options or something. Heyman assumes that teams will be cautious with Sheets because of his injury history, but will act with reckless abandon with Sabathia despite the mileage on his arm.
For what it is worth, Haren will be getting $12.75 million for his “free agency” years (the time when he would have been eligible for free agency) and a $15.5 million option. I don’t know if this will affect future pitching contracts.

CC Sabathia
$25 million a year!!! You’ve got to be kidding me.
Mark my words – if some team spends over $20 million/year for CC, they will regret it. Maybe not in 2009, but by 2012, they’ll be looking at that contract the way SF looks at Barry Zito and Colorado and Atlanta looked at Mike Hampton.
If CC makes that much, I hope he goes to the Angels.
by JBImaknee on Aug 15, 2008 4:35 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Who cares though?
If the Yankees sign him and they win the WS next year he’ll be a big reason why. That contract is worth it for them if it breaks that World Series drought.

maybe
But I don’t think the Yankees are one pitcher away from winning the World Series. Last I checked they were 6.5 games out of the wild card, and 9.5 out of the division lead. You put Sabathia in there instead of whoever their #5 is, and yeah, they are in the playoff race, but they wouldn’t even be a guaranteed division winner.
I pay that much money for a guy if you know you are ONE PIECE away from winning, not several. Which is why the Rangers should stay far, far, far, far away from him (and KRod – same deal). The Yankees would likely make several other moves if they signed CC, two $25+ million / year contracts shouldn’t stop them.
by JBImaknee on Aug 15, 2008 5:23 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
the addition of CC
could easily make them world series favorites for next year. They could have a rotation of CC, Joba, Wang, Hughes, and a veteran like Pettite or Mussina to round out the bunch. Couple that with the addition of at least one big bat and i think its fair to say that the decision to sign or not sign CC could be the move that puts them over the top.
by Smoakin in the Boys Room on Aug 15, 2008 6:51 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
they are one piece...
look at how many injuries they have had this year. A healthy Hughes and a healthy Wang. That puts them right back at the top IMO.

CC worth it!
If we get CC for a 6 year deal and he is only amazing productive for four years… SOLD!
By then we will have sold many more tickets and been to a couple of playoffs and sold lots of Sabathia jerseys.
He will pay for himself!
It is like with Michael Young. If he gives us three productive years of his new five year deal then I am happy.

If Davis is dealt...
JD should pick up Hank’s option and put him at 1B next year. I’m not a fan of dealing Davis right now, and I doubt Hank could actually stay healthy for a full season, but if Davis is dealt for a young ace then that’s what should be done imo.
