Gerald laird plus a solid prospect for Chris Volstad?
Did any one see this? Reeves wrote it and Im sure it's been posted and talked about.
There’s also no question that Daniels will try to add a young starter from outside the organization with a trade, probably from the Rangers’ abundant depth at catcher. They were highly interested in Florida’s Chris Volstad at the trade deadline and were willing to deal Gerald Laird and a solid prospect. They’ll look for similar opportunities this winter.
He is young, fits JD's mold. It's a shame it didn't happen. He seems to have a bright future in baseball, but of course not with us. When does a pitcher besides Nolan have a good future with us. Anybody?

Even Nolan didn't have a good future with us
He was pretty old when he got to Texas. I don’t think they signed him for his future…

Assuming Laird stays; Salty, Hurley, Holland for Grienke?

That would be the Chris Young trade all over again
Giving up like 15 years combined of young stud prospects for 2 or so years of a pitcher who is solid yet not an ace.

5 or so years of Chris Young, 6 years of Agon
for 1 year of Eaton and 4 of Otsuka….not that years are all that matter but unless we significantly won the talent, it wasn’t worth it. Wasn’t really comparing anyone to Greinke just saying you’re giving up a crapload of years from some potential studs.

Greinke=overrated. He’s league average if he pitches half his games here.

not a chance grienke is instantly relegated to “league average” status if he gets traded to us.
there is a chance he spends significant time on the DL if he gets traded to us though.

I don't think he costs that much
Greinke is good, but he will be in his 2nd arbitration year, and he has question marks in his past. I think people are overestimating what he’ll cost.
Kansas City needs major league ready talent – most everyone in their lineup can be upgraded (save Alex Gordon, obviously)
How about this:
Salty (fixes their catching situation), Byrd (a solid bat and OFer for them, which they could use), Matt Harrison (replaces Greinke in rotation), and one or two very good, but not great prospects (e.g., Vallejo)

K
just curious. Because, i think there were people who were okay with Jamey’s proposal of Hurley, Salty, JMJ, and Madrigal for Greinke. Just seeing if Holland all of a sudden would make that big of a difference. My guess, that 3 for 1 would have been okay with a lot of people at the start of the season.

You're kidding right?
Maybe if you subtracted one of Hurley or Holland I could handle that, but Salty and both Hurley and Dutch for Greinke is outrageous IMO.

No Holland
Anyone that watched Holland’s Double – AA debut would tell you that Holland should be pretty much untouchable. I would not trade him in any deal. Yes, he needs to work on his secondary stuff, but that was a dominant game against a team that hit Feliz pretty well last night!!!
In short Holland should stay in Ranger blue.

in any deal
again foolish reasoning
lincecum for salty/holland/andrus – your NOT trading for lincecum because of not wanting o trade holland?
granted it would take more than that to get lincecum (clearly) but the point is the same

Naw
I’m a fan of the Grink, who is horribly underrated by some of the haters on this board, but that’s too much even for a real solid genuine good young #2 starter. As much as I’d love to have a guy who can come here and give us a buttload of innings with an ERA in 3.5-4.0 range, giving up Hurley and Holland is too rich for my blood.
The 40 Trumps All!!!

by Longhorn on Aug 15, 2008 9:23 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yah, probably
Cause I didn’t really know who Derek Holland was. His breakout into a potential top-50 overall prospect makes that deal unpalatable to me.
Hurley and Salty and some unknown (to me), albeit talented, Spokane arm for Grink?
You betcha.
It’s tough to deal a guy as talented as Salty and a guy who could be a very nice LAIE (with the upside to be more), but Grink is the exact type of pitcher we need here. A young above average pitcher with a good track record of health with a great fastball who can strike people out when he needs to. If we’re gonna trade our young chips for a pitcher Grink is the type of guy I hope we target. He’s not an ace, but he’s very good and we need good pitchers.
The 40 Trumps All!!!

yeah
that was kinda my point when i put up this hypothetical. We never know about some players. A trade that seems like a slamdunk before the season is quite the opposite due to one player 4-5 months later.
By me putting that hypothetical up, I was just curious to see how people thought of Holland over that 4-5 month period. Looks unanimous, and it should be that way…
You’re right thought about Greinke, he’s pretty good and I hope JD targets him this offseason.

i’m gonna take away the start that he was hurt. his ERA is 3.57 and 3 of the 4 teams he faced are good hitting teams. i had to pitch in those starts without his low to mid 90s fastball and he still got people out, once he comes back fully healthy and gets his fastball back he will be really good
