Smoak deal close?
A deal with Justin Smoak is supposedly close, coming in at $3 million with a major league deal...
UPDATE -- Jim Callis says Alonso has signed with the Reds, which should, one would think, pave the way for a Smoak deal to get done.

I don't see the point in limiting your options...
with a major league deal. I figure you come to a reasonable dollar amount that the major league deal is worth to him, and then pay him that.
"I know you're a bit dense but no, it doesn't. Obviously lying isn't a problem for me."
major league deal
Again a ML deal is not that inhibiting to us right now. With Borbon looking like he will be ready for at least an injury replacement callup by midseason next year we are fine with our 40 man roster. We were actually in worse position this past spring with Madrigal taking up a spot than we will be this next spring with Smoak taking up a spot.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Now
What this may do right away is keep us from seeing JMJ this September
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
ehh
we have 3 more years to evaluate and see him so im not real worried.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
I was just looking foward to seeing him...
Im very intrigued by him, and can’t wait to get a look at what he has.
I think...
tying up a 40 man spot unnecessarily is just a bad idea. Plus, if this becomes a trend, you’ll have a bunch of people making it a condition.
"I know you're a bit dense but no, it doesn't. Obviously lying isn't a problem for me."
If we are in the position...
…to sign 40 Justin Smoaks I think that is a good thing. You don’t give these out to anybody but Smoak has the talent to warrant one.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Julio Borbon...
is no Justin Smoak, and he got one.
"I know you're a bit dense but no, it doesn't. Obviously lying isn't a problem for me."
But no one...
was saying at the time that he was or is a Smoak-level talent. And he’s tying up a 40 man spot. Who did we lose this spring because we needed a 40-man spot?
"I know you're a bit dense but no, it doesn't. Obviously lying isn't a problem for me."
Madrigal was tying up a 40 spot also
and he had only been a pitcher for 1 season in A ball.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Madrigal wasn't given a Major League deal...
which is what we’re talking about right now.
"I know you're a bit dense but no, it doesn't. Obviously lying isn't a problem for me."
No we are talking about a spot on the 40 man roster
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
If you think a discussion of major league deals...
warrants bringing up Madrigal, more power to you.
"I know you're a bit dense but no, it doesn't. Obviously lying isn't a problem for me."
Dude
Major League deal means a spot on the 40 man roster. Thats all it means. Im bringing up Madrigal because people want to blame us tying up a 40 man spot with Borbon last year. Madrigal was given one and had done nothing and looked to be a year or two away. It is very relevant. But you obviously don’t understand how baseball works so thats why you don’t understand. Do you want me to draw you a picture or something.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
but....
if we hadn’t given Borbon that deal then Madigral wouldn’t have mattered now would he?
And you can say that about just about anybody else on the roster.
Had we not protected Max Ramirez last winter we wouldn’t have had that problem either.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
very true.....
but giving a ML deal to a draftee that you have a lot of leverage over makes you at some point make a decision about #40 that has to become #41. #41 in their opinion was Galarraga. Might still have been released for someone else….but might not.
How did we have alot of leverage?
Borbon was a mid first round talent who slid due to signability plus an injury his junior year. I could easily see him going back to college to get back to the mid-top of the first round this year. Plus at the time, before all the deadline deals, we didn’t have any OF prospects in our system.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
leverage.....
the drafting team is the only team that player can sign with at the time and if he doesn’t he has to go back into the draft after a season where he possibly plays worse, gets hurt (again in Borbon’s case), or is taken by a team that doesn’t pay above slot the next season (astros?). Anyone of the three could limit the one chance at guaranteed money for a player. That is why the team has leverage.
I understand
I think we had some leverage but not alot. And I think Borbons skill set and our system at the time played a big role in us giving in to his demands
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Blame Jason Jennings,
not Julio Borbon…
in the end you will be glad we have Julio Borbon rather than Armando.
And some people had us taking Borbon
with our 1st pick in the 1st round…..
He was a big time talent, and injuries probably prevented him from being taken quite a bit higher.
each case is different
Borbon was considered a mid first round talent who was from a major university and seen as a guy who could rise quickly through the minors. He slid to the supplemental and with, at the time, our dearth of OF prospects we caved in. Hes proven it to be a smart decision this year.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
I don't know...
Gallaraga is gone because we needed a spot on the 40. To me it’s a stupid move. Pay cash.
"I know you're a bit dense but no, it doesn't. Obviously lying isn't a problem for me."
We didn't lose Galarraga because of Borbon
We may have well lost him because of Madrigal. That guy had pitched for one year in A ball and was taking up a spot on the 40 as well. Nobody, and I mean nobody, thought he would be in the bigs this year.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Does Borbon have a spot on the 40?
Would he have had a spot on the 40 w/o the Major League deal?
"I know you're a bit dense but no, it doesn't. Obviously lying isn't a problem for me."
OK
so by that idiotic logic we lost Galarraga because of Josh Hamilton. I fail to see your point
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
No...
Josh Hamilton is playing on the big team. Borbon is not.
"I know you're a bit dense but no, it doesn't. Obviously lying isn't a problem for me."
OK
let me rephrase. We lost Galarraga for Joaquin Arias, Max Ramirez, Kam Loe, Wes Littleton, Travis Metcalf. Take your pick.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
They have to have 40 man spots...
Borbon doesn’t.
"I know you're a bit dense but no, it doesn't. Obviously lying isn't a problem for me."
really?
Any of those guys are gonna be better than Borbon?
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Who knows?
I don’t think you give major league deals to draftees. Don’t think it makes sense. Giving Borbon one last year contributed to the roster problems in the spring.
"I know you're a bit dense but no, it doesn't. Obviously lying isn't a problem for me."
Maybe
Keeping scrubs like Loe or Littleton or Fukimori or Metcalf contributed to the problems
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Don't think...
I would label Littleton a “scrub.” Either way, I don’t see why you won’t acknowledge that Borbon contributed to the roster problems.
"I know you're a bit dense but no, it doesn't. Obviously lying isn't a problem for me."
If he did, great.
I don’t think it makes sense to limit the roster that way, and if he’s acknowledging that it can unnecessarily limit the roster, then great.
"I know you're a bit dense but no, it doesn't. Obviously lying isn't a problem for me."
he contributed
But he was not the reason we lost Galarraga.
And im sorry but what has Littleton done to warrant anything other than being called a scrub?

Porcello
Was a 18 year old kid, Smoak is a college Jr. A hell of a lot easier to project his future rather than Porcello. Plus I think it is absolutely retarded to give a HS kid a ML deal.

No 18 year old deserves a ML deal
Not Porcello, Not Beckett, none of them. I don’t care how good he does if you think we have rushed our pitchers this year imagine if we had Porcello on the 40 man roster. He would have been up here and we probably would have had another David Clyde on our hands.

Look at some of the deals being handed out.
It’s not just becoming a trend within this organization, it’s becoming a trend throughout baseball.
College guys who feel like they can contribute quickly are demanding ML deals. Look at Matusz, Smoak and Alonso (although he hasn’t signed) this year. Posey hasn’t signed yet and I’ll bet the hold up is a ML deal. I’m really surprised Beckham didn’t ask for a ML deal and just signed at slot.
Plus, if there’s a dude that I don’t mind giving a ML deal to, it’s Smoak.
Nevermind on Posey.
Dude’s going to get 7mil+. Giants are waiting to announce.
Ml Deals
This is definitely becoming a trend with top college draftees and i don’t think it’s a good thing for baseball. it’s going to start limiting teams too much if every year they have to tie up a 40man spot for their top pick.
"I'm against picketing, but I don't know how to show it." - Mitch Hedberg
I don't see it as a good or bad thing.
It’s not like every college guy is going to ask for it (Beckham this year for example). Plus, you could always just money whip the shit out of them like the Giants are doing with Posey to avoid it.
you think that money....
that you whip them with doesn’t factor into the team’s budget?
When did I say that?
I just mentioned it as a potential way to bypass giving these guys a ML contract.
money whipping.....
or ML deals. Either one that the player holds out for because it’s becoming the “norm” is going to limit the team somehow. I’d much rather see the teams play hardball and force a kid to say no to $3.5MM.
I'm with you
I’d rather give him an extra million or two, but then, it’s not my money. I don’t expect the 40 to be a big issue this winter, but there could be times next season where it will be.
Time you enjoy wasting was not wasted.
yeah
i’d rather he get a few extra mill if thats what it takes. I mean, I don’t have a problem with him getting a ml deal really since i think he will be with the big league team within 2yrs. It’s the trend i don’t like.
"I'm against picketing, but I don't know how to show it." - Mitch Hedberg

so what do we tell our 1st round pick next year
who asks for the same?
Greatest Inventions Ever? 1. TiVO, 2. Boobs, 3. Baseball
not saying i'm against it
just it kind of makes things difficult in the future
Greatest Inventions Ever? 1. TiVO, 2. Boobs, 3. Baseball
If he is a top end college talent
that may be the case, and it will probably be worth it…
Very very few high school prospects are looking for that.
Again
If they are the caliber of Justin Smoak then you say sure. If they are a Blake Beavan talent you say have fun in college we’ll see ya in 3 years
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Agreed. Smoak is top 5 talent
and we got lucky. If we get lucky enough next year to get a guy like him, give’m the ML deal. Who cares if the 40th guy gets bumped…
Yep
If Smoak is the talent the Rangers think he is, he’s going to be here so quickly that the 40-man spot won’t be much of an issue. Like Teixeira, I suspect he’s not going to need much more than a year in the minors.
"I dont care to debate with a troll." - Sharky
smoak
my problem isn’t believing in smoaks ability to be with the team quickly, it’s just the trend that is being created of top college guys asking for these types of deals. a guy like smoak i can see doing it for, but when guys like borbon demand it like last season, thats where trouble starts.
"I'm against picketing, but I don't know how to show it." - Mitch Hedberg
Borbon was a top college guy last year
Just because he slid doesn’t mean he didn’t have the hype. He was projected to go mid first round and with his skill set he was projected to rise very quickly, as hes shown this year.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
borbon
don’t get me wrong, i like him as a player.
i just don’t place him in the same level as smoak.
"I'm against picketing, but I don't know how to show it." - Mitch Hedberg
Im not either
But in my opinion he was worthy of a ML deal especially if that is what made the difference between him signing with us and going back to college.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
i suppose my main gripe is it seems like players are now starting to ask more and more for ML deals, and eventually it’s going to snowball.
Though i certainly wouldnt want to lose out on a smoak or a borbon just because of an ML deal, and at this time last year I don’t believe i was entirely against borbon getting such a deal, but i wasn’t crazy about it.
"I'm against picketing, but I don't know how to show it." - Mitch Hedberg
Thats very valid
And it probably won’t slow down as long as these guys perform and make these ML deals work. I imagine as soon as a team gets bitten in the ass by one they will think twice and the trend will turn
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
