Smoak deal close?
A deal with Justin Smoak is supposedly close, coming in at $3 million with a major league deal...
UPDATE -- Jim Callis says Alonso has signed with the Reds, which should, one would think, pave the way for a Smoak deal to get done.

I don't see the point in limiting your options...
with a major league deal. I figure you come to a reasonable dollar amount that the major league deal is worth to him, and then pay him that.

major league deal
Again a ML deal is not that inhibiting to us right now. With Borbon looking like he will be ready for at least an injury replacement callup by midseason next year we are fine with our 40 man roster. We were actually in worse position this past spring with Madrigal taking up a spot than we will be this next spring with Smoak taking up a spot.

I think...
tying up a 40 man spot unnecessarily is just a bad idea. Plus, if this becomes a trend, you’ll have a bunch of people making it a condition.

If we are in the position...
…to sign 40 Justin Smoaks I think that is a good thing. You don’t give these out to anybody but Smoak has the talent to warrant one.

Dude
Major League deal means a spot on the 40 man roster. Thats all it means. Im bringing up Madrigal because people want to blame us tying up a 40 man spot with Borbon last year. Madrigal was given one and had done nothing and looked to be a year or two away. It is very relevant. But you obviously don’t understand how baseball works so thats why you don’t understand. Do you want me to draw you a picture or something.

And you can say that about just about anybody else on the roster.
Had we not protected Max Ramirez last winter we wouldn’t have had that problem either.

very true.....
but giving a ML deal to a draftee that you have a lot of leverage over makes you at some point make a decision about #40 that has to become #41. #41 in their opinion was Galarraga. Might still have been released for someone else….but might not.
by bdavison94 on Aug 15, 2008 10:30 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
How did we have alot of leverage?
Borbon was a mid first round talent who slid due to signability plus an injury his junior year. I could easily see him going back to college to get back to the mid-top of the first round this year. Plus at the time, before all the deadline deals, we didn’t have any OF prospects in our system.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
by bigsteve on Aug 15, 2008 10:33 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
leverage.....
the drafting team is the only team that player can sign with at the time and if he doesn’t he has to go back into the draft after a season where he possibly plays worse, gets hurt (again in Borbon’s case), or is taken by a team that doesn’t pay above slot the next season (astros?). Anyone of the three could limit the one chance at guaranteed money for a player. That is why the team has leverage.
by bdavison94 on Aug 15, 2008 10:39 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I understand
I think we had some leverage but not alot. And I think Borbons skill set and our system at the time played a big role in us giving in to his demands

each case is different
Borbon was considered a mid first round talent who was from a major university and seen as a guy who could rise quickly through the minors. He slid to the supplemental and with, at the time, our dearth of OF prospects we caved in. Hes proven it to be a smart decision this year.

Look at some of the deals being handed out.
It’s not just becoming a trend within this organization, it’s becoming a trend throughout baseball.
College guys who feel like they can contribute quickly are demanding ML deals. Look at Matusz, Smoak and Alonso (although he hasn’t signed) this year. Posey hasn’t signed yet and I’ll bet the hold up is a ML deal. I’m really surprised Beckham didn’t ask for a ML deal and just signed at slot.
Plus, if there’s a dude that I don’t mind giving a ML deal to, it’s Smoak.

Ml Deals
This is definitely becoming a trend with top college draftees and i don’t think it’s a good thing for baseball. it’s going to start limiting teams too much if every year they have to tie up a 40man spot for their top pick.

I don't see it as a good or bad thing.
It’s not like every college guy is going to ask for it (Beckham this year for example). Plus, you could always just money whip the shit out of them like the Giants are doing with Posey to avoid it.
by LiamP on Aug 15, 2008 10:10 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
see then the money whipping draws the scrutiny of mlb. the only real solution here is to have rounds 1 and 2 draft position locked into a salary like the nba. (like adam has been saying)

money whipping.....
or ML deals. Either one that the player holds out for because it’s becoming the “norm” is going to limit the team somehow. I’d much rather see the teams play hardball and force a kid to say no to $3.5MM.

borbon
don’t get me wrong, i like him as a player.
i just don’t place him in the same level as smoak.

Im not either
But in my opinion he was worthy of a ML deal especially if that is what made the difference between him signing with us and going back to college.

i suppose my main gripe is it seems like players are now starting to ask more and more for ML deals, and eventually it’s going to snowball.
Though i certainly wouldnt want to lose out on a smoak or a borbon just because of an ML deal, and at this time last year I don’t believe i was entirely against borbon getting such a deal, but i wasn’t crazy about it.

Thats very valid
And it probably won’t slow down as long as these guys perform and make these ML deals work. I imagine as soon as a team gets bitten in the ass by one they will think twice and the trend will turn

I’m hearing Pedro Alvarez to the Pirates for $8-8.5MM.
That would be roughly $5MM above slot.

"I promise I’ll blog as soon as I know something. It could be 10 minutes or so after the deadline if they do it right before and have to file things with the league.
We might know sooner if they don’t end up making the deal. Robbie Ross, who has the same agent, said he wasn’t sure which way it might go. Stay tuned."
