THIS is exactly why I can't hate on Jon Daniels
He has orchestrated two great drafts and inked some great signings.
Sooner or later, I believe we’ll see all of this materialize at the big league level as well. I don’t think i have to say it, but I’m hoping it’s sooner rather than later.

Happy to be wrong.
I was going from the thought that it would be around the same level of Alonso’s ML deal, only with a couple of million because it’s a minor league – I seem to recall in the first thread people thinking that’s how much over we’d have to go to get him to waive that right.
I’ve been hard on JD at times, most of the time deservedly, but this buys a lot of goodwill. Excellent deal.

What a fantastic deal. Very ballsy move by Daniels by holding his ground.
Sure we all know the kid didn’t have any leverage since he’s a junior and senior’s REALLY have no leverage so never get a good offer, but I’m really surprised that JD was able to convince Smoak that same thing.
Thank goodness it worked!
Not to geek out on JD too much.
But this was pretty impressive. Especially considering how just about everyone had Smoak over Alonso. The fact that we got him for 1 mil less and a minor league deal either means JD just destroyed Bledsoe or Jocketty got killed. I’d say a little of column A, a little of column B.

Brett hunter signed with Oakland as a 7th 1.1mill
who do you think ends up the better pitcher/player:
Ross (2)
murphy(3)
weiland (4)
murphy (5)
Bleier (6)
Thompson (7)
Not sure why the rangers didnt snap up hunter if he was healthy and he did pitch before the season ended…my money is on hunter.
I thought it was elbow shenanigans.
This is the Texas Rangers, professional destroyers of hope, we're talking about. - BAC
no he wasn't
he got shut down for most of the season, then pitched like 1 game, and was dominating during the summer
Hunter
forearm stiffness, creaky elbow. My bad, no surgery.
Hunter has bounced between the starting rotation and the closer’s role during his college career, with many scouts feeling that his somewhat max-effort, herky-jerky delivery will make him a more natural fit in the bullpen. He has a very good athletic frame with perfect proportions and a high, angular leg-kick similar to Trevor Hoffman’s. His best pitch is his fastball, which sits in the 92-96 range coming out of the bullpen. In a starting role he takes a little bit off of his fastball and adds more natural sinking and cutting movement when he does so. He has a very sharp curveball that makes his fastball that much more difficult to hit to keep hitters guessing, and he also throws a changeup when starting. He works quickly and he does tend to tip his delivery a little when throwing his breaking ball. Pepperdine used Hunter more as a starter a year ago, and may decide to keep him in that role this spring. His success as a starter will dictate how high he goes, but his arm is first-round quality regardless of the role he’s used in.
I’d bet on Ross.
Scheppers' story is still a mystery
His Agency stated that he had a fractured shoulder or something weird, then they retracted it but said they didnt think is was a labrum, scouts whispered it was a labrum, he went to see Jobe or Andrews or something with his MRI a week before the draft then I heard nothing else afterwards. Weird.
The fact that he didn't sign
probably means he’s pretty confident his arm is fine though.
I doubt it’s arm problems since he started pitching his freshman year of college.
I'll be interested
to see what the full story is on him next year
That is unfortunate
I was hpoing the A’s wouldn’t manage to sign him. Still a risky pick, even though we did come back at the end of the season. He may never amount to more than a power arm in the bullpen after the injury problems
yah
sucks for us- I think he is healthy now:
OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland A’s today announced that they have agreed to terms with right-handed pitcher Brett Hunter, their seventh round selection in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft.
Hunter was 1-0 with a 3.38 ERA in five games, four starts, with Pepperdine this year and missed most of the season with forearm and elbow soreness. He pitched for Team USA (Collegiate) following the season and was 2-0 with a 1.47 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 18.1 innings. Hunter was a preseason first-team All-American in 2008 and compiled a 12-8 record and a 3.46 ERA in three seasons with the Waves.
The A's draft a pitcher and the Rangers draft a hitter.......no one agrees with me
Feliz and Hurley. The 1-2 punch of the future
A's
The A’s took a hitter (Jemile Weeks) in the first round, who by most accounts, was a slight overdraft. Smoak was the guy they wanted.
Texas used its second and third picks on pitchers, both of whom they signed.
Not sure what your point is here.
"I dont care to debate with a troll." - Sharky

Smoak doesn't need a nickname
Every time he hits a dinger, we’ll just say “that was Smoaked”. But when your name is Justin Smoak, you don’t need a nickname.
Damn, I kinda wish my name was Justin Smoak now.
We need to hire Chuck Norris to kick the ass of any Ranger fan caught booing one of our young pitchers at the RBiA.
if you were Smoak
you would have just experienced JD’s rather large smoaker in your rear….ouch

And just to indulge myself
On the show, this is what they changed their names to…
Phoebe – Princess Consuela Banana Hammock
Mike – Crap Bag

It does totally sound like a badass action movie name, doesn't it?
Max Power, Trent Steele, and Justin Smoak.
Fits in nicely.

It has everyone but Smoak updated
I wonder when we get some news on the longshots
yeah or neah
I think
Castner and Martinez are definite Nos…
Anybody ever hear anything on
Freiman from Duke. I remember hearing good things about his power but nothing since the draft.
Yeah I liked the 1/2 half of him, his velocity,
but BA said he didnt have a feel for ptiching and had shitty mechanics so who was risky, but at 10, I’m glad we gave it a shot (if he doesnt sign). Also, I think he got injured in the Cape, appearing only in 1 game, so he was probably destined to return to school.
Castner for sure
I’ve always thought Martinez could be bought though.

Excellent
Even though this is exactly what I expected, it’s still nice news to come home to. Smoak’s a beast. Our minor league system is just beyond stacked.
It’s making me think a big 4 or 5-for-1 deal is coming this Winter.
The 40 Trumps All!!!
Yeah
I just hope we choose the right “1”.
We need to hire Chuck Norris to kick the ass of any Ranger fan caught booing one of our young pitchers at the RBiA.
Halladay
I don’t think they have any interest in trading him. At least not while J.P. is there, they seem to have no desire to go into full fledged re-build mode.

there's baseball in the olympics?
according to NBC, there’s nothing but Gymnastics, track, softball and Michael Phelps.
Seriously, worst coverage of an Olympics ever.
Ben Petralli...
According to Anthony Andro of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the Rangers signed 33rd round pick catcher Ben Petralli. He’s the son of former Ranger Geno Petralli. He was a guy I was interested in seeing if the Rangers would sign. I’ve heard that he had talent that warranted being picked in the first ten rounds.
Also, if memory serves me, this is the fifth time he’s been drafted. That alone is somewhat intriguing.

Watching a player hit into a double play. A fan's delight. It's the only time in professional sports where you can sit on your couch, out of shape and drinking, and say, "Yes, I could have done better."
Yep...
That’s right, it is the second time the Rangers have selected Ben Petralli. And more importantly, my memory is still… ummm… what’s that word?
2008 – 33rd round – Texas
2007 – 47th round – Texas
2006 – 17th round – Detroit
2005 — 15th round – Detroit
2004 – 26th round – Los Angeles Dodgers

Well...
Ben Petralli is 22, born October 10th, 1985. That makes him younger than fellow 2008 Rangers’ Draft Picks who signed:
Dennis Guinn (b. 8/2/85) – 17th round
Doug Hogan (b. 9/29/84) – 18th round
Adam Cobb (b. 9/5/85) – 24th round
Ryan Schlecht (b. 7/30/85) – 34th round
James McGraw (b. 2/15/85) – 40th round
Lejuan Rafael Hill (b. 11/18/83) – 47th round

for what it's worth
John Sickels thought highly enough of Gino The Younger to take him in the 5th round for this year’s Twins Shadow Draft. All he said about him in commentary, though, was that he thought his name would be called early in day 1.
Here’s the link, if anyone cares: http://www.minorleagueball.com/2008/6/5/546576/real-time-twins-shadow-dra
If 35 players is the stated figure to have signed
that means that no additional picks signed outside of these three…
No on Harold Martinez...

• (Agent Mike) Maulini, also an advisor to UM signee Harold Martinez, said the former Miami Braddock shortstop will report to school this fall after breaking contract negotiations off with the Texas Rangers.

The worst part is...
I don’t think it’s a bit with this guy.
Nope
He reminds me of some of the people a few years back on the Newberg board, who one year wanted the Rangers to use every one of their draft picks on pitchers. Never mind that you have to take a few hitters, if for no other reason than to have some warm bodies for your rookie team…
