Hambone drops bomb on group of fans... allegedly

Not sure how much I believe this, because I heard on the radio today that this happened at the Boston airport, but the Boston Herald is reporting that Hamilton, in a hurry to get out of Boston to make it home for the birth of his child, refused to sign an autograph for a group of fans outside the team hotel and, when asked a second time by a female member of the group, turned around and barked in her face that he had to pack.  The team was reportedly nearby, and the Rangers' "media man" Court Berry-Tripp made a few damage control statements.

We're getting one 5-minutes-of-fame fan's take on what happened, so we don't really know what was said or the context it was said in.  That being said, as good of a guy as Josh appears to us to be, I can understand if he was razzled at that moment about the implosion of the season, the lack of options to make it home, and possibly the edginess that comes with being a recovering addict.  If it happened, I just hate that it did in front of a 12-year old kid.

Nobody's perfect

And I’m pretty sure that most guys whose wife is in labor aren’t going to be very receptive to being hounded by some fan. I have no pity for obnoxious Boston fans

Nobody deserves to be yelled at, but they should’ve respected what was going on in his personal life at the time.

Hamilton's attitude...

I’m sorry, but it’s really not that hard to smile and say “I’m sorry, not right now. I can’t today”.

It’s truly not that hard. No, I’ve never had fans bugging me for an autograph but he’s a big boy, I’m sure he could handle telling someone no in a proper manner.

and the adult who was asking him

should’ve left him alone when he declined the first time. She was a big girl, I’m sure she could handle an adult telling her no and to know that she shouldn’t pester him anymore.

but two wrongs don’t make a right.

Somebody’s got to step up and be the bigger person. That is IF Hamilton did what is said that he did.

Hamilton...

I think he probably comes into contact with fans more often than that fan comes into contact with ballplayers. He should really be well versed in how to handle that situation.

Yeah, especially when he's got a kid on the way and is stressed out about it

that stuff happens all the time, you’re right.

It seems to me she said something to him she shouldn't have

and he reacted accordingly. He appears to be a genuine good guy and accomodating star from what people who’ve met him have said and how he’s handled the spotlight, but he was stressed and short on time in this one instance. As for my edgy comment, as I stated above, I don’t know what it’s like to recover from addiction and the effect it takes, but it’s possible that was another ingredient along with the stressful situation involved in his reaction. It may not have been either… I don’t know.

I think that's reading way too much into it

I think his family is his life, and he had a one track mind. It’s really a non-issue, and the lady should’ve left him alone, and Hamilton should’ve just kept walking.

I agree with this...

However, I don’t agree with your statement above about being stressed out with having a baby on the way.

I hate to bring the Marine Corps into it because it is the lifestyle that I chose and I don’t need anyone feeling sorry for me, but I know of way too many people that have been in Iraq while their kid was born. You know what they have to do? They have to go out and perform their job that day in a professional manner which may consist of smiling at Iraqis while doing sweeps through a town. These same Iraqis that they are smiling at may very well be the same people that lobbed mortars at our position the night before. Like I said, that is the life that we chose though as is baseball the life that Hamilton chose knowing full well that he will be away from his family sometimes weeks at a time and may not be near his family when important events take place. All the while putting up with fans (Ranger fans or baseball fans) that don’t understand what he may be going through personally at that point and time.

by Chris Hanes on Aug 19, 2008 7:10 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

well

the difference is that Hamilton wasn’t “working.”. He was walking through a hotel to go to his family. So, I don’t think your comparison is apt. For example, had he been stretching on the field and this happened, then your marine story would be relevant.

Either way I don’t see either of their actions as being anything worthy of a controversy. It’s not a big deal that he blew off one fan out of the thousands he has accomodated over the past year or so.

"the edginess that comes with being a recovering addict"

really? was it necessary to throw that in there? thats just ridiculous.

the guy was frustrated after a terrible series and was trying to get home for the birth of his child. to throw his former addiction in there as a reason is just plain stupid.

by 6th street on Aug 18, 2008 11:56 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Is it?

Just to clarify, I said possibly. I don’t know if it was or wasn’t. Do you personally know how hard that shit is to kick and how it affects a person? If you’re an active or recovering drug user and can attest that it’s not a factor, then ok, I’ll take your word that what I said is ridiculous. Otherwise, your best guess that it wasn’t a factor is as good as mine was that it may or may not have been.

Aikman and Bradshaw?

I think

that there are plenty of other factors that are OBVIOUS and require no speculation. Like, gee, maybe the fact that he was trying to get home for the birth of his child and to be with his wife in labor. See, thats perfectly plausible and frustration is understandable. And, best of all, it requires no baseless speculation.

As you said, you have no idea how recovering from addiction affects someone. As such, you shouldnt speculate one way or another whether it does or not, especially not when there are plenty of other reasonable explanations available.

absolutely ridiculous.

by 6th street on Aug 18, 2008 12:03 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

in fact

i think that if you want to play the “how do you know” game, that you should have some evidence to connect the two things before you speculate. Like, some evidence that a recovering addict, a couple years removed from said addiction, is prone to having increased tempers and frustration with others for no reason.

im unaware of any factual evidence supporting that.

I completely agree. That is a ridiculous statement. I had it copied and was ready to post and say the exact same thing the moment I read it. He’s a human being, trying to get home to see his child born. It has nothing to do with whether or not you’re a recovering addict—a person is going to get frustrated occasionally in a stressful situation like that.

Fans can be pretty annoying

I wouldn’t be surprised if they bothered him for an autograph more than the article lets on.

I went up to Baltimore last weekend to see Josh play vs the Orioles (my wife’s dad was Josh’s summer legion baseball coach) and fans were very annoying about getting autographs. My wife and I went down to right above the dugout to talk to him and when he came over to talk to us, ~30 people immediately surrounded us and started calling for Josh to sign their stuff (which he did).

Even if the story is 100% true, I’d give Josh a pass just because he signs for so many people (He was the only one out signing autographs at that Orioles game).

by Motiak on Aug 18, 2008 12:48 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

yeah

she obviously was harassing him, probably calling him things (as we know, Boston folks aren’t known for their kind, polite discourse), and Josh was in no mood to deal with it. He’s probably not used to saying no as it is, so he ended up doing what everyone else would have done. He’s human…

You know...

I’ve had two children now, in the last 30 months or so.

On each occasion, I had a work commitment that required me to be away from the hospital the day after. That was extremely trying, and I was pretty much on edge each time.

I can only imagine how frayed my nerves would be if I knew my wife had gone into labor 1500 miles away, a couple of weeks before her due date, and I was delayed in getting back to her.

So while I don’t know what happened here, I can certainly understand why Josh might have reacted in a much less friendly way than he normally would.

"Fans can be pretty annoying"

That is very true for some fans, in fact i think most of the players including josh do a great job of controlling themselves around some of the people, most of those wanting autographs (including the kids) are just getting them to sell on ebay anyway, if i were in the shoes of some of the ML players I would not at this stage of my life be able to get away without pounding the hell out of somebody thus ending my career and maybe heading off to the pokey, needless to say i hate limelight.

by TRFAN on Aug 18, 2008 2:29 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

i also dont think josh or any athlete is under any obligation to explain or justify why they dont want to sign an autograph or pose for a picture or whatever. a polite refusal should be sufficient and any fan who persists beyond that is the one who is out of line.

I'm appalled that fans feel they're entitled to autographs

Sure, it’s great when a player stops to sign. And, yes, I’m disappointed when I can’t get a player to stop for me (which has happened a ton since I’m not a child and I’m not hot). But I, in no way, feel like a player is obligated to sign an autograph for me.

That said, I also don’t believe in approaching celebs/players in public places like an airport. They are there on private business and that is their time. It’s the same reason I didn’t approach any of the Rangers last summer when I was in Anaheim and staying in the same hotel as them. I sat 20 ft. from Kevin Millwood most of the night in the hotel lounge area. Gerald Laird walked by me a few times with his family. C.J. Wilson walked by four times — on his phone every time. And I was in an elevator with Kam Loe and his brother. But I didn’t feel the time was appropriate to ask them for an autograph. I CERTAINLY wouldn’t have approached Josh Hamilton in an airport…and even if I had, I would have dropped it after he refused the first time.

Maybe that’s just me.

My worst athlete experience

was about 3 weeks after the Marlins won the World Series and I saw Josh Beckett out at a bar in Miami. He was sitting by himself and I congratulated him on the win. He half looked at me, chewing on his gum, and grinned slightly and looked away. Not knowing what to do, I was about to leave when a couple of chicks walked up to him. I stood away, now minding my own business. He yelled over at me and asked if I had a cigarette for a couple of ladies who had just come up. I said yes and handed them to them. When I pulled out my lighter and tried to light them, these chicks acted like they’d never smoked a cigarette before and started sucking the filters like their lives depended on it, so the light went out. Beckett said, “boy, I hope you’re better in bed than you are lighting a cigarette” with a smirk on his face. The chicks started laughing and I lit the cigs and walked away.

Beckett is notoriously cocky, but I will probably never approach another athlete again.
