Minors 8-18: Special "The Smoak Has Landed" Edition

According to Richard Durrett over at the DMN blog it's semi-official that we're gonna get to see (or, for most of us, read about) our newest sexy 1b prospect play and hit 5th tonight:

Marcus Jacobs, the Clinton LumberKings beat writer for The Clinton Herald, just called and said the plan right now is for Justin Smoak to bat fifth tonight in his professional debut with the Class A club.

The team hasn't decided if Smoak will DH tonight or play first. Just passing it along.

So we've got that going for us, which is nice.

Here's the full schedule according to that Shroomy Guys' Web Page/Site:

SPO-8:30- Boscan
CLN-7:00- Beavan
BAK-9:00- Phillips
FRS-7:00- Holland
OKC-12- Mendoza
AZRL-pm- Miggy?

As of right now the OKC game is still listed as delayed due to rain, so who knows if it's gonna happen or not.

C-Wun, Boscan and Dutch, plus the debut of the Smoaker of Bitches?

It's gonna be a cool night of minor league action, y'all.

random question

well not so random

remember a few yrs back you (along with myself) were fairly high on johan yan…

who are the latin guys you like this year (other than feliz lol) – can be guys we signed, guys in low minors, whatever

The only ones I’ve heard any details on from this year’s group are Alcides Escobar’s cousin, the LHP, and the guy they just announced last week.

Most of the other promising guys are obvious and are guys we talk about regularly. I think that Tomas Telis in their DSL is really interesting, and I’m still very intrigued with Gueris Grullon. And I love Font of course.

Yan is too bad. He was sent to AZL in 2006, and it looked for like a month that he could definitely handle the league offensively at age 17. He’s got the other tools, if he could just hit, but it definitely looks like he won’t hit. I am one who would be curious whether he has the stuff to make the transition to pitching.

Offense doesn't doubt me, but my first and primemost thing is defense and punt return and kickoff return

by Brett Perryman on Aug 18, 2008 4:17 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Telis

Jason Cole has an interview up with Jayce Tingler discussing Telis. Briefly – they didn’t think he had the wheels to progress far as a MIF so they made him catcher. Great bat, great hands, his defense at C has really come along nicely. He’s a natural righty bat who switch hits – but has become more comfortable now from the left side. A weight-lifting program similar to what HS athletes get in the States has built him up to 205 lbs. – “He’s a strong kid.” Jayce sez it’s possible he skips the AZRL next summer and goes straight to the NWL – but others will decide that. Cole will have part 2 with Tingler soon – might get some more DSL scoop from him then.

by shroomer on Aug 18, 2008 4:34 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Thanks

for the details on why he switched to C, when its already a loaded position, what about OF position if not the wheels for MIF, or is he too slow for that too?

by gamerabcd on Aug 18, 2008 4:41 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

A couple of things to add to that

First, if he’s 205 now, has he grown any? They list him at 5-8, so yeah I would think he’d be destined to catch if he’s that stocky at age 17.

Second, his lefty/righty splits are striking. He’s hitting much, much better left handed. That’s kind of interesting considering that he’s a natural RHB.

Third, it is obviously easier to put up good BB/SO numbers in DSL than short season ball and even short season ball than full season ball (as Engel Beltre will tell you), but after what we’ve seen from the likes of Yan and Manny Solis and even Santana, their three highest profile offensive signees since they rededicated themselves to Latin America, it’s real nice to see a guy controlling the strike zone.

Offense doesn't doubt me, but my first and primemost thing is defense and punt return and kickoff return

by Brett Perryman on Aug 18, 2008 4:42 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Is this the Rangers asking him to switch hit?

Or is it him wanting to and really excelling at it? A few of the guys playing very well in DSL, why are they not getting moved up, I mean some of the older players, Telis of course is very young.

by gamerabcd on Aug 18, 2008 4:49 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Something else on Telis

Looking at his numbers, his road OPS split is 370 points higher than his home split. That seems like a good sign. He’s also having a huge August.

Offense doesn't doubt me, but my first and primemost thing is defense and punt return and kickoff return

by Brett Perryman on Aug 18, 2008 4:56 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Tingler quote:

1 – from Tingler’s wording it’s possible to infer he’s grown an inch or two as well.
2 – Tingler blames that on the sparseness of LHP in the DSL. He’s at about a 4-1 ratio FWIW. Tingler sez he’s a fine righty hitter and not to worry – again FWIW.
3 – Tingler quote:

I’ve never seen a 17-year-old be able to put the bat on the ball as much as this kid.

I don't remember who said it

Jamey once issued a “watch out for Laynce Nix” nebulus prediction. That brought about a bunch of “watch out for…” statements about players who ranged from obvious good prospects to spares who had had good weeks, usually at levels too low for their ages, but when someone issued the “watch out for Jayce Tingler” line (and was serious) after a nice little stretch, I knew that we’d hit bottom.

inch or two

still pretty stocky. Good point about the LHP, he may not see a whole lot of that until he advances a couple of levels. But maybe Tingler’s comments speak of how he looks at the plate and not the numbers, per se?

I’m secretly hoping he’ll be the first major leaguer to pick music by Thomas Talis for his PAs.

Yeahboy, Cowboy

Jason just now answered some questions for me on his AZRL thread:

Font is working out with the team. I’m going to try and get an interview with him today.
.
I talked to Ross last night in person. He’s in Arizona. He signed a 2009 contract, though, so he’s just getting ready for instructs.
.
Ross is currently serving as the world’s highest paid ballboy.
.
Off to the complex. I’ll have the Wieland story and a bunch of pictures up tonight. Hopefully I’ll get the Max Ramirez rehab story up tomorrow morning. I think he’ll be playing in tonight’s AZL game — I think.

Hopefully will be challenged with spot in Spokane next year, as Clinton will be loaded with guys as of right now.

He might have a sports hernia, you might get your wish about rest, and be out the rest of the year.

by gamerabcd on Aug 18, 2008 5:50 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think it is

They have to decide if he can play a role next year. Won’t be as much fun to watch with no Kinsler though.

This does probably increase their chances of being 15 or higher in the draft, which is a good thing.

by tricer on Aug 18, 2008 5:56 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Why wouldn't it?

He is only 23, maybe 24. Was a prospect before injuries, even if it was NY hype.

by gamerabcd on Aug 18, 2008 5:58 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

that makes him a legit

SS next year so they can move Mike Young. Then whenever Andrus is ready the team can trade Arias. Don’t move him till you have to.

by Hull Fan on Aug 18, 2008 9:24 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think they already know

what they have in Arias. The question is can the club rely on him to play SS full-time next year in a pinch, playing a utility guy role or the 1st in line for a call-up from AAA. His shoulder is still gimpy…

by rooster on Aug 18, 2008 4:32 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Right

I wish SRL [hint-hint] would briefly give us an idea how he got these photos. Did he shoot straight to RAW? How did he stabilize the camera? What kinda lens? Did he raise the ISO a bunch? Etc. etc.

by shroomer on Aug 18, 2008 4:38 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Camera

New Canon XSI with 75-300 stabilizer lens (effectively about 100-400 on digital). Didn’t shoot those RAW, just the largest JPG setting (12.1mp). Probably started off at ISO 400, then 800, then 1600 as it got darker. Almost everything shot in Canon’s “Tv” mode: fixed shutter speed, floating f-stop. Camera set to “servo” mode which constantly refocuses on the center point.

I usually just rest the lens on my knee or just hold it with my other hand. Shoot about 100 pix in three innings, post some of the keepers.

There seems to me no question that the Batman film "The Dark Knight"... is at some level a paean of praise to the fortitude and moral courage that has been shown by George W. Bush in this time of terror and war. -- Andrew Klavan

none move up this year

Next year, this is how I see it shakin’ out for what it is worth:
Kirkman to AA taking philips spot;; phillips to bullpen
Poveda pitches a few months in A+ because of his limited innings this yr due to injury
Projected rotations with ages on 4/1/09 in ():
AA: feliz(20.9), holland(22.5), reed(23.3), kiker(21.4), kirkman(22.5) -with phillips(22.5) in AA pen and Schlact (23.3)in AA/ AAA pen if he isnt lost to rule 5 (and shouldn’t be). Reed is a candidate for the bullpen around midseason if he can’t get his secondary stuff in order
A+: Beavan (20.3), Main (20.3), Poveda (21.5), Bleier (22), Murphy (21.9)

by Goyogringo on Aug 18, 2008 9:23 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah AA

Poveda’s and Kirkman’s numbers in HA and LA respectively are pretty similar. Poveda also pitched a little in HA last season. Together that’s 19 HA starts, and it will probably be 21 when this season is over. He’s always been young for his level, and I think that he’s just much better equipped to deal with AA than Kirkman right now.

yes.
yes i did.

i live quite a ways from Clinton, and had road tripped there to see Moustakas and Main,
but when someone told me Smoak was flying in Sunday morning I decided I needed to stay and at least snap a polaroid of him.

Engel Beltre

what are the reports on his defense? Does he profile as a ML CF, or will he likely have to be moved to a corner?

Warner Madrigal makes Ezequiel Astacio look downright handsome.

by tricer on Aug 18, 2008 6:36 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

More than enough speed for CF

Only thing he needs to work on is tracking the ball better, or getting better look at it when its coming off the bat. But there is no reason to move him, he has best range for any Ranger CF in the system, maybe 2nd only to Borbon.

by gamerabcd on Aug 18, 2008 6:39 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

CF

He probably could play CF in the bigs but with Borbon in front of him I think he will be moved when he gets to Frisco to get ready for the bigs. Him in left with Borbon in center and Hamilton in right would be a badass outfield

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

by bigsteve on Aug 18, 2008 6:41 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I still think he will remain in CF

and when in MLB then move to one of the corners, as no other CF in system with enough speed to man center.

by gamerabcd on Aug 18, 2008 6:45 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Some have projected him as a RF

after he puts on weight and develops his raw power in a couple of years. Of course, he’ll have to learn some plate discipline before he’s penciled into the bigs…

Beavan fastball up to 93

Holland with 5 ks through 4, Beavan with 5 as well, both with 3 hits too.

Is he pitching high alot in this game? I am just looking at the Gameday, and seems his fastballs are almost all high.

Control

Yes, Holland was leaving the fastball up. He left it up in the bullpens during warm-ups and continued during the game. Not near as sharp as his first Frisco outing where everything was down. Fastball mostly 91-94. His secondary stuff will need work, but there is a ton to like with this kid. I have seen both his Frisco starts and he is going to be good. His first start was legit!!

He may be a douchebag and an ass personally but in between the lines the guy is fuckin money.

by bigsteve on Aug 18, 2008 8:40 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Sure

He played his butt off here. Yet being a douchebag rubbed off on the 24 other kids playing beside him. We were a rebuilding team, that didnt that management couldn’t face it. Having an albtros contract where spending on prospects was limited was not going to make the team better.

by gamerabcd on Aug 18, 2008 8:49 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

We needed to be a rebuilding team

And Arod contract would not have inhibited rebuilding. But the front office at the time kept trying to plug the holes with aging veterans which the trickle down effect cost us draft picks and created a void in our farm system which is hard to rebuild with a void like that.

Or

unless your payroll subsequently is cut in half like a certain team I know after signing a certain shortstop.

Offense doesn't doubt me, but my first and primemost thing is defense and punt return and kickoff return

by Brett Perryman on Aug 19, 2008 9:52 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Or

the signing of a big name causes you to stop looking for other options and you miss out on a younger cheaper player that might be just as good for far less money — opportunity cost.

Time you enjoy wasting was not wasted.

LA signed 29 guys with that much cash

Guess they were very cost effective, yet not college guys like when Oak was doing that in previous seasons.

Left game bases loaded, next pitcher allowed all 3 guys to score. This seems like Neil Ramirez first start in Ariz, where he had like 3 balks. Hopefully he gets the nerves out tonight.
