Bradley
Okay, so it wasn't that long ago that it seemed like people either wanted the Rangers to trade him at the deadline or bring him back for next year.
With the numbers he's put up, he's due for a payday. If you were part of the front office would you give it to him? The guy has missed a lot of time.
Personally, I really dig the guy. I love his approach at the plate and the attitude he brings to the team. Not only that, he also seems to enjoy playing here and if what you read in the press is any indication, he's well-liked by his teammates. But the missed time does bother me. And while he's the kind of guy who is always going be good when healthy, he's probably not going to duplicate his 2008 numbers even if he could avoid injuries. It seems to me that this was his career year and he'll likely drop off to some degree next year.
It would depend on the money/years obviously, and I don't see him giving the Rangers a discount big enough for me to bring him back if I had anything to do with the decision. When the team needed him the most, he was down with injuries. Now I don't blame the guy for the Rangers falling out of the Wild Card race...I never thought they had the pitching to pass who was in front of them. I did however think Bradley would come back and the Rangers would be able to stick around and stay close enough to make it a little more interesting. That doesn't look like it will happen.
Anyway, what do you guys think? Will Bradley play for Texas next year or not? Would you be pissed if not or would you just accept it? I don't think any Rangers fan would be happy to see him go, but if I'm wrong speak up.

I wouldn’t lose any sleep if we didn’t resign him. I would also be happy if we did resign him. I think his contract would have to be loaded with levels for plate appearances due to his injury history. His season this year makes his top end salary upwards of 10 million a year. But all the time lost means realistically you could probably get him for about 6-7. If I were the GM I would offer him a 2 year deal with 13 million guaranteed, incentive levels based on plate appearances at 300, 400, 450, 500, and 550+. He gets 550+ and his salary increases up to 11 million. The contract also would include options for 2 additional years that would trigger automatically at 500 PAs but would also be a team option if that level is not reached. So for instance if he doesn’t get that 500 his 2nd year but had a great 1st year of the deal and was on fire that 2nd year and some freak injury happened the team could retain him if they wanted.

What type of free agent would he be? A type A? if so than I saw offer him arbitration and see if someone will forfeit the picks and test what market’s out there for an oft injured DH. Then if you can get him for 3 year deal worth 20 million or so I would do it.
yep type A
If we end up with a top 15 draft pick thus its protected I think it would be better to resign Bradley. If we somehow end up with an unprotected draft pick then I think the chances of resigning Bradley go down dramatically since he is our only type A FA this year

Love how he fits into the lineup
and the clubhouse, but looking forward to 2009 and beyond I’d rather give Ramirez a lengthy look at DH. Comparing opening day 2009 with opening day 2008 you have a nice improvement at first base to somewhat offset the dip at DH from Bradley to a young Max.
Time you enjoy wasting was not wasted.
Bradley is special
but all the questions remain.
We are not the same team when he is out of the lineup
I have nothing to say
I've gone back and forth...
this year on Board Game.
Right now I think I’m still ok with him coming back, but only as a 1 year deal with incentives for games played to increase the contract in terms on both # of years and $. If he won’t do that then I’m fine with him leaving and taking the picks.
Problem is he fits so well in the lineup behind Hamilton. If Board Game isn’t going to be there the Rangers need to find another RH bat to hit cleanup. The offense is ok/good without him but it has been good/great with him.
"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates
Take the picks and let him walk.
He can’t stay in the lineup consistently. He can’t even stay healthy as the freakin DH. Play Ramirez or pick up a guy like Burrell. It’s the same reason why I hope the Rangers don’t pick up Blalock’s option unless it’s to trade him somewhere. Being great doesn’t matter when you miss every third game or more.
you want them to release Ian also?
Hes never played a full season

Um
There’s a huge difference in the amount of time Kinsler has missed with injuries, and what types of injuries they were. Not a very good comparison at all.

I don't want to release Kinsler
I am just throwing it out there for all the people who want to not resign Bradley or pick up Hanks option. While all three have varying types of injuries the fact is they all have an injury history. Just like Ben Sheets who alot of people want to sign to a big deal this winter. Ian has had a great year and I want him to retire a Ranger. I wouldn’t mind having Sheets. I also wouldn’t mind having both Bradley and Hank next year. But to release/not resign those simply due to their injuries is wrong. If the money is right you have to resign them based on their production when healthy. Blalocks money is good enough to pick up his option. We will have to wait and see about Bradleys money.

Ian's injuries
have been a little more flukey, have kept him out shorter, the injury history is only a few years long, and he plays at a position more physically demanding and plays an aggressive, active style of baseball. Not saying there isn’t some concern to it but i dont think its fair to lump him in with bradley and blalock in terms of fragility.

Ian
Ians been injured in all three of his big league seasons. And I don’t think his injuries have been any more fluky than Hanks thoracic whatchmacallit disease or his carpal tunnel this year. Hanks only been injured the last two years.

Blalock
You’d give six million dollars to Blalock based on what he’s produced over the last two years?
by Black Francis on Aug 18, 2008 10:25 PM CDT up reply actions
when hes been healthy hes been good
Same as Bradley prior to this year. Blalock hasn’t played as much as Bradley had but when hes been in there hes been good. And 6 mil is not that much these days.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
6 million isn't much
…and neither is Blalock. I’d rather watch Metcalf that read about the myriad of reasons Blalock will be on the disabled list next season.
He could be hit like Babe Ruth for 40 games and wouldn’t be worth six million dollars. Time to move on.
by Black Francis on Aug 18, 2008 11:04 PM CDT up reply actions
40 games of Babe Ruth numbers is worth way more than 6mil
but you have a good point.

But Bradley means more to this lineup
and Hank is a solid ballplayer (when healthy) and is worth the money.
I have nothing to say
Ok...
but when they don’t re-sign him and Burrell wants much more than the Rangers are willing to give to another bat I hope you are ready for another season of Marlon Byrd hitting cleanup. Remember that last year?
"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates
this lineup can hit without
Milton. Max Ramirez just needs to be given a spot in the lineup everyday. If that’s DH 4 days, 1B one, and Catcher one, fine but his bat can play at this level given the opportunity. As for Marlon Byrd, will he even be in Arlington next season? I’m not convinced he’ll be on the team come Spring Training.
Max
What did he show while he was up here that leads you to believe he could just step into the cleanup spot in the lineup and produce?
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
who said anything about the cleanup spot?
the preceding post is not nearly as negative or insulting as you think it is
I just assumed
based on Hull fans comment that we could do without Bradley and Max needs a spot.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
No I wouldn't
put him cleanup but Davis might be ready for that next season or we could switch the lineup around and drop Kinsler to bat 5th. For argument’s sake something like this could work.
Boggs
Young
Kinsler
Hamilton
Murphy
Ramirez
Davis
Salty
Arias (whoever’s playing short stop if MY moves to 3rd)
If you're going to have lefties back to back
in Hamilton and Murphy, you might as well switch Davis and Murphy…
Hitting Davis 7th next year would be a waste of his talents.

This lineup has proved
it is not near as potent with Bradley not in the lineup. Show me some numbers.
I have nothing to say
Lefties
This lineup is too lefty heavy for me. Good left handed pitchers usually dominate the Rangers without a guy like Bradley in the lineup. Remember, they got no-hit last year by Beurlhe (a lefty) and generally struggle. Having a switch hitter in the lineup really helps against the current lefty problem with the lineup.

a year
But since he has been playing on it I would say it would be about 18 months before he is fully healthy again. It really is a miracle he was able to play on Opening Day
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
I'd offer him up to 12 million for 08
and a vesting option for the following year based on plate appearances. Any longer of a deal than that, and I’d be real scared that he would come back to bite us.
Warner Madrigal makes Ezequiel Astacio look downright handsome.
1 year deal
I’d consider bringing him back on a 1 year deal with options. I didn’t like the idea of bringing him back earlier in the year, but I really think this offense needs a veteran bat of Bradley’s caliber in the middle of the order even if he only has 300-400 ab’s all season.
dont want him back
unless its a big bargain
id rather let max get the at bats

I am for resigning him...
You can gaurantee me that Ron Washington will be here for the length of his contract. I know he has been a model A teammate and citizen while with the Rangers, but that is because of RW. What do we do if we sign him to 3 years and then we start off 5-15 next year and RW is fired? Then we hire someone between the way RW is and the way Buck was. Can we be sure he is this model teamate we have grown to love. I personally think RW could be fired in the off season, but for sure 20 games in. So I think we continue our youth movement and let Max try his hand and use the money on pitching and NOT SURE , but us losing him will offset the losing of our draft pick when we sign a type A free agent pitcher.
I am a MB fan
We have only seen a small amount of what he can do when healthy, he seems to like it here, the fans and his team mates like him as well, i just think he needed the right place to fit in, and i believe it is Arlington., look at the rangers numbers when he plays and the numbers (or lack there of) when he does not play, they are a better team to be sure when MB is in there, I say re-sign him if they can, hopefully he will be healthy at the start of next season.
We have only seen a small amount of what he can do when healthy
That’s the problem. He is never healthy for any meaningful amount of time. He had to leave another game tonight due to left knee soreness. I could understand it if it were his surgically repaired right knee.
Nolan Ryan should be the Rangers president, GM, manager and pitching coach.
2yrs/20mil with a vesting option for a third year at 12mm based on PAs
Would you sign him to such a deal?
Would he sign such a deal?

I think you gotta lower the guaranteed money
His injuries and missed time this year makes 10 mil per guaranteed a little too risky. A deal with multiple incentive levels for PAs making the potential about 10-11 mil would be ideal but only guaranteeing about half that.

I'd sign him to it.
I was for moving him at the deadline, but now that you haven’t, the most logical move I see is to see if you can sign him to a short term deal. A 2 year guaranteed deal would be a great move for the Rangers. I’d hate to lose him for some compensation pickes, which aren’t too likely to develop into much of an impact.
If I were him, I might be more inclined to see if I could get a longer term deal that could set me for life in FA. If I were the team, I wouldn’t want to go past 2 years guaranteed.

I think both sides refuse that one
For the club, a lot of it, I think, comes down to how highly you think of Max Ramirez.
In Milton’s case, somebody probably offers more. Not a ton more, but enough to make him forget about his Washingkinhamtonian ties.

knees
One problem alot of pople have when coming off injuries is they injure the opposite leg/foot/arm/whatever because they compensate too much. They are so cautious with their injured part the opposite part gets more strain and is injured alot of the times
