And please don't hesitate to tell me you want on the list for next time.
NOTE: There has been some speculation as to what the criteria are for this vote. Should guys who are currently in the bigs be involved in "prospect" discussions? For the sake of this exercise we're taking what the guys have done in the big leagues and using the BA prospect formula of 130 AB's or 50 ip. If a guy is under those limits, he's still a prospect right now, so he goes on the list. It's that simple.

Been voting for Vallejo since JMJ
lets get him on the rankings!!!
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
He's fast
He’s very, very fast and can apparently field the crap out of the ball.
But is he more than a utility man?
His bat really worries me.
If he’s the good version of Luis Castillo, that’s fabulous. If he’s Ramon Nivar, that’s bad.
The 40 Trumps All!!!
Was Ramon Nivar ever this good of a defensive player
Also, Ramon Nivar never showed any signs of plate discipline in the minors. Joaquin Arias if he had some more power is a better comp for Nivar.

New Guys:
Joe Wieland- 4th round pick out of a Nevada high school. 18 yrs old. Signed quickly and is pitching well in the AZL so far. 25.0 innings, 2.10era, 17/5 k/bb.
Richard Bleier- 6th round pick out of some bumfuck Florida college. 21 yrs old. Signed quickly and is pitching well in Spokane so far. 2.81era in 41.2 innings with a 30/8 k/bb and an incredible 3.74 ground outs for every fly out. He keeps the ball on the ground, yo.
Andrew Laughter- 23 yr old reliever currently pitching in Frisco. Posting a 2.10era in 51.1 innings with a 36/14 k/bb. Be sure to check out Salty Dog’s overshadowed prospect feature on Mr. Laughter.
The 40 Trumps All!!!
I voted for Mr. Robbie Ross last time
And gosh darn it if I’m not going to do it again. The Rangers apparently love him, and so do I. Kid’s gonna be good.
It’s between him and Cristian Santana for me, and I’ll take the arm over the injury plagued catcher this time. If Cristian can stay healthy next year in Bakersfield though, watch out. That kid has got some serious ceiling in him.
The 40 Trumps All!!!
Voted for Ross again
Have no problem with any of the top four vote getters though.

I was thinking it’s time Adam Fox got sent down and Whittleman promoted to Frisco
"Over the years, my favorite pastime outside baseball is driving through a pasture looking at cattle." - Nolan Ryan
What about
Whittleman’s performance makes you think that? He hit .228/.368/.307 in July, after hitting .207 /.340/.341 in June. I fully expected that to happen coming into the season and even after the first month or so, but the guy just isn’t hitting. And he flat out doesn’t hit lefties at all right now.
I’d lean toward moving Lemon up and playing him or Vallejo at 3B over Whittleman getting moved up when he’d probably be a disaster.

I didn't think this poll was about "performance"
after Thomas Diamond made the list.
Greatest Inventions Ever? 1. TiVO, 2. Boobs, 3. Baseball
Right but
he’s talking about a promotion there, not the poll.

Vallejo is getting Fonted up the culo

there's a buncha vallejo haters here!

Wait a second
Tomato Sauce is down with a speedy good defense up the middle but questionable bat guy?
Explain, please.

Questionable bat?

Until you post an .800+ ops in the minors, the freaking dirkatron questions your bat!
The 40 Trumps All!!!
I'll remember that the next time you are extolling the virtues of Julio "Slap and Scurry" Borbon

Not trying to say Vallejo is without virtue
Just having fun pointing out that Vallejo and Borbon are very similar hitters, yet you love Vallejo like a sexy step-son and then shower Borbon with vitriol.
It’s odd, Senor Sauce.
The 40 Trumps All!!!
Madrigal, Mayberry, Hunter, Diamond
He should be ahead of all those guys (maybe not Hunter).
And why do you say his bat is questionable?
Last week I took a pleasure trip. I drove my wife to the airport.
Cause he can't put up an OPS over .800 in the minors?
2005 Az Rangers 18 .291/.364/.360/.724
2006 Clinton 19 .234/.289/.284/.573
2007 Clinton 20 .269/.326/.327/.653
2008 Bkrsfld 21 .287/.349/.432/.781
Frisco 21 .274/.333/.393/726* (May be a bit off on this one, as I got it from the baseballcube, which updates about once a week)
You can take the speech Mugatu gives at the end of Zoolander (the one about how he’s going insane thinking he’s the only one who sees this very obvious flaw) and apply it to me and Vallejo. I feel like I’m on crazy pills!!!
He’s fast, which I freaking LOVE, and he has the tools to be good hitter (decent pop, good bat control), but there is no way you can look at those numbers and tell me his bat isn’t questionable. I mean, his breakout season in the very hitter friendly Cal league featured a whopping .349 obp and a .781ops.
The 40 Trumps All!!!
Okay
I would say that the aspect of his bat that is more questionable is his past performance. I don’t think that he’s shown a questionable bat this season, really. He’s in a slump right now, and the numbers are less impressive in AA right at the moment than they were a week or two ago.
The thing is that the main thing that he hadn’t shown previously was pop. He hat hit for decent averages and OBPs at approprate ages in previous seasons, but his SLG had never been above 360. But if you watch him in Frisco, it’s clear that he’s hitting the ball hard now, and I have to assume that he’s hitting it harder than he did in the past, given his numbers.
Also, I think that it’s worth noting that the MWL is a bad place for hitters. That’s where his poor numbers took place.

Heh
I get what your saying, but that first sentence sounded almost Joe Morganesque.
The only things that’s spotty in his performance up to this point is his performance up to this point.
The 40 Trumps All!!!
Have you ever typed a sentence without proofing it
and then read it after you posted it and said, ‘wow, that makes no sense’? Yeah, that was one of those sentences.

Went with Vallejo...
Santana next.
"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates
JV
again for me, been voting for him a while. I just think he’s got an incredible set of all around tools. If he’s able to continue to improve his hitting, he’ll be as good as any of our Mid IF prospects if not better than alot of them
Gomez
Everyone’s letting the injury overshadow just how good he’s been this year. He’ll be solid in Bakersfield next season then watch out. Gomez’s numbers this year are superior to everyone else on this list.
To those of you who are inclined...
to pick Jose Vallejo, German Duran, or Robbie Ross at this spot, here is what I need to tell you:
"You've got to change your evil ways, baby, before I stop lovin' you. You've got to change, baby, and every word that I say is true.... I'm gettin' tried of waitin' and foolin' around."
SANTANA TIME!!!

Wait there's more...
I’m getting tired of waiting and fooling around.

The twenty-somethings
Thanks, Dirkatron, for keeping the prospect rankings going. You are doing a great service for those of us who like to learn what others know about the future Rangers.
In my opinion, the minor leaguers who are likely to receive the largest number of votes in the next eight rounds readily fall into three groups:
Poised to Zoom up the Charts in 2009
Mitch Moreland – Despite playing in the pitcher-friendly MWL and suffering through a slump the last few weeks, Moreland is hitting 303/383/507/890. He is currently ranked 4th in OPS, 4th in slugging, 7th in OBP, and 8th in avg among qualified players in the MWL. Given that he has only recently become a one-way player (he was his team’s closer in college) and his power is only recently producing homeruns (he hit 7 of his 12 homers in July), don’t be surprised to see Moreland put up a 300/400/600/1000 line in the hitter-friendly Cal league next year.
Tim Murphy – A relatively polished college pitcher with 3 to 4 quality pitches that he can throw for strikes, Murphy is pitching out of the bullpen in Spokane to limit his innings. Thus far, he has pitched 23.2 innings and given up 12 hits, 11 walks, 2 HR, and 6 ER. He has 27 K’s, a 1.39 GO/FO ratio, an ERA of 2.28, and a WHIP below 1. Except for the fact that he is left-handed and weighs only 190 lbs, its hard to distinguish 2008 Tim Murphy from 2007 Tommy Hunter. Don’t be surprised to see Murphy fronting the Bakersfield rotation at the start of 2009 with an opportunity to rise quickly through the Ranger’s minor league system next year.
Jose Vallejo - He’s been discussed ad nauseum, so I won’t attempt to lay out his attributes. JD says Vallejo has done more for his status this year than any other prospect in the Rangers system. If he can improve his OPS and consistency next year in AA/AAA, then Vallejo is essentially guaranteed to get a chance to play in the majors.
Wilfredo Boscan – After catching the eye of Zywica and Jason Parks last year as a 17-year-old in the DSL, Boscan has not disappointed in his stateside debut this year in Spokane. Consistent with his performance last year, the 18-year-old right-hander has produced a 2.52 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, 9.2 K/9IP, and 1.7 GO/FO ratio in 39.1 innings. Next year, Boscan should follow the trail blazed between Spokane and Clinton by Feliz and Holland and get his first taste of full-season minor league baseball. Hopefully, Boscan will have the same level of success in the MWL in 2009 that his two predecessors experienced in 2008.
Robbie Ross - The highly competitive lefty with a low-90’s fastball, a potentially plus breaking ball, and a developing change-up will have Fall Instructs and Spring Training to show whether he should get the Beavan treatment (starting in Clinton) or the NeRa treatment (starting in Spokane) in 2009. Whichever the case, Ross will almost certainly rank in the 10-15 range when we go through this exercise next year.
Still to come:
Extraordinarily talented but disappointing in 2008
Omar Poveda
Fabio Castillo
Christian Santana
Likely to Contribute Soon at the Major League Level
German Duran
Beau Jones
Andrew Laughter
Brennan Garr
Bakersfield
If the reports are right, Moreland and Murphy will be in the Carolina League, meaning Moreland’s numbers will be hurt and Murphy’s will be helped.
Duran
Hey if you guys can hold him off until 25 I will indeed have had the privilege of voting for him 10x! I think I called it in 18-19
Johnny
gets my vote.
btw… I seriously need to get out water my tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and egg plants. I actaully planted egg plants for the first time this year.
Anybody need any late gardening veggie tips, do let me know ;)

Damn Kevin
I thought Jose Vallejo had already won in the top 20. I voted for him way before Johnny
Jose Vallejo is one of my favorite. I’ve been a fan :)

I'm gonna go with German Duran here
Myself, I think the list should finish out with Duran, Beau Jones and Vallejo in that order.
I’ve been considering how I would rank my own top 25, but I’m gonna wait until the final poll to post that (we are going to stop after #25, right?)
We need to hire Chuck Norris to kick the ass of any Ranger fan caught booing one of our young pitchers at the RBiA.
Probably after 25, yah
Interest seems to really be slowing down.
And 25 is a good number.
