Minors - 8/2
My turn I guess ...
SPO-8:30- Boscan
CLN-7:00- Beavan
BAK-9:30- Phillips
FRS-7:00- Feliz
OKC-7:00- Lizard
AZRL-pm- Mathis?
Benoit and Mathis are supposed to pitch tonight in rehab stints. Wieland and/or O'Campo should pitch for the AZ rooks tonight after Mathis presumably starts. And as always we've got our eyes peeled for a Thompson or Font sighting. Murphy's off to a good start in AZ. I researched that guy a little and his OBP as a senior was something like .650 - lotsa walks. He got pitched around his junior year after exploding as a soph - being the only real threat on a mediocre team. He realized that he was helping the pitchers out too much, regrouped and was much more disciplined as a senior - hence great numbers. He even hit 4 HR's in one game back in March - which is ridiculous at any level. Guy might be fun to watch develop. I hate fun.
When I saw this pic of Kiker and Poveda taken just a coupla days ago I figured Kiker was okay and due back shortly - he looks pretty unworried here.
Here are some pics of Martin Perez taken during July - uno, due, tres, quattro.
And since Boscan's going tonight - here's that really cool pic of him again.
Here's an article in the Spokane newspaper about David Paisano's emo demotion experience. Having a hitting coach who speaks Spanish has helped him. The words "major league caliber" are used somewhere in there.
And here's a slideshow for the ladies. All pics taken within about 10 feet of my front door this Spring and Summer.

great info on Murphy… Should be a fun guy to watch develop. I was wondering when Weiland was gonna pitch again, he’s been really good so far, i got my hopes up for him.
Also, is Feliz really pitching tonight or is that tease?

Just got a tripod so I’m gonna venture soon back out into the countryside and try to take some cool landscapes. A 200mm zoom lens would be nice to have, too – maybe someday.

as to why you don’t think that it’s obvious who the better prospect is, even just based on that information. Are you holding it against a 19 year old in AA that his power hasn’t developed?

Beltre in the third
Singled, stole second, and scored on a Moreland single. In the games I have listened to it seems that when Beltre get on-base, he is guaranteed to produce a run. He drives pitchers to distraction with his lead-offs and steals which makes life easy for Lawson and Moreland. It is no surprise to me that Beltre leads the MWL in runs scored despite sporting an OBP that is barely above 300.

Fun fact of the night
Before the game tonight, Beltre ranked first in the MWL with 77 runs scored but was tied for 55th with only 36 RBIs. Clinton leads the MWL in runs scored and has four players ranked among the top 15 in RBIs. Unfortunately for Beltre, the 7, 8, and 9 hitters in the Lumberkings line-up haven’t been very good.

Teagarden
Saw this posted on BA a while back and hadn’t seen anyone throw this TT tidbit out there.
BA highlighted 4 Olympians at the forefront of team USA.
Known as a defensive stalwart coming out of Texas, Teagarden has made some slight tweaks to his hitting mechanics and stance to become a threat at the plate as well. “A lot of things before the swing even happens,” Teagarden said. “A lot of guys have good swings but it’s the preparation before they swing, getting to see the ball early and things like that, that really helped me make good decisions. I’ve been working hard on that and it’s definitely helped me a lot.” While Teagarden’s offense has regressed from the .310/.426/.586 line he put up last year, he still shows a sound approach and developing power. But it’s still his defense that stands out, as Teagarden records excellent pop times of 1.9 that he complements with a cannon arm.
DAVEY JOHNSON SAYS:”If you saw the Futures Game, he threw out (a runner) on a breaking ball on a 3-2 pitch with a lefthanded hitter up. He threw a strike on the runner’s side of the bag. He’s a guy that can shut down the running game.”

I wasn't the first
Just like several others, I only had his really nice DSL numbers and age to go by, for the most part, last winter. I may be a little more willing to mention a guy like that than those who don’t like to give much attention to lower level guys, but these other guys saw the same thing. I think I had him in the low 30s in the winter and Jamey, for instance, had him #39, so that’s real close. Now that some of our info guys know more about his stuff and a few have seen him (and are sharing that), it’s probably a little more realistic and fair to rank him. My guess is that he’ll be a low 20’s guy on my list this winter, if he can finish his August well. Of course, that could always be behind the curve and we could always have a Derek Holland situation (to a much lesser degree) at some point, where we don’t really realize just how good a guy is getting.

More on Boscan
It’s just more of the same against the more advanced and disciplined, mostly NCAA-seasoned hitters in the NWL this summer. Boscan is once again averaging a strikeout per inning (43 K’s in 43.1 innings—while walking just eight), and he sports an excellent 1.76 grounder-to-fly ratio. His WHIP (walks + hits / innings pitched) is a remarkable 1.08.
Thanks, MJH.

last 10 games:
12.2 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 4 BB, 17 K, 0.71 ERA
He needs to come up. Right now the only guys throwing well in the ‘pen are Eddie G, Rupe, and Fx2. I’d send down Madrigal and bring him up. At the latest he should be back when Hunter goes back down in 10 days or so.

Sele + 50 lbs. Not quite as good of a curve, but maybe a little extra velocity on his fastball.
I really wasn’t expecting to see him hit 95/96 on the gun. Not sure if he can do that on a consistant basis or if he was just amped up for his debut. Either way, I think he looked very good. It’s nice to see a guy fly through our system and make it up and look like he belongs there.

Zach Phillips
Getting bombed again tonight. He gave up 4 earned runs in the first inning His ERA is approaching 7. It’s hard to believe that this is the same guy that posted a sub-3.00 ERA at Clinton last year. Interestingly, his peripherals are not substantially different between this year and last. He’s still striking out nearly one batter per inning and giving up fewer than 1 HR/9IP. He’s giving up slightly more than 1 hit per inning, whereas last year he gave up slightly less than 1 hit per inning. The biggest difference is his walk-rate, which has doubled this year compared to last. He’s only 21. Is there a chance that Phillips could be a valuable major league player?
