Some afternoon linkaliciousness

A couple of prospecty chats today...Jim Callis has one up at ESPN, and among other things, he says Teagarden has more trade value than Salty and that Smoak > Daric Barton...

Kevin Goldstein also has a chat up with lots of Rangers stuff, including some Derek Holland love and some thoughts on Elvis Andrus and Julio Borbon...

Keith Law has a lengthy explanation as to how major league deals for draftees work, and what the ramifications are...

He also blasts Jim Bowden for not getting Aaron Crow signed...

And before anyone asks...unless the Rangers start losing a whole lot more games, or Crow really sucks with the Cats, Crow isn't likely to be on the board when the Rangers pick in 2009...

John Barten has the new THT Awards up, and Matt Harrison gets a somewhat dubious honor this week...

I can see

Goldstein’s take on Andrus.

“he’s plus defender, singles hitting shortstop with speed and no other secondary skills. So everyday SS who hits 7th or 8th — I’m not too excited”

One reason I like Andrus

…and I don’t think that Goldstein is sensitive enough to this…is that Andrus shows a willingness to draw walks, to go along with overall improvement over the course of a year at a level. For the year Andrus only draws a walk every 12.8 official at-bats and has an OBP of .340, but since the minor league ASB, he is right at what I see as an important line of one per ten, and his OBP is .360. A 19 year old with a .360 OBP in AA is not, in my mind, necessarily destined for the bottom of an order, or for poor on-base numbers in general.

Borbon is different. He’s three years older, has grown up in the more walk-friendly American environment, and when you compare his AA BA of .316 and his very poor very poor walk rate of one per 24.5 official at-bats, he’s simply a guy with no interest in taking bases on balls.

One thing I don’t get here. He says that Andrus is a plus defender with speed and a singles hitter – but with no other secondary skills. That smacks of bias to me. What other skills could he possibly have? There is only one more. Power. He doesn’t think that Andrus will hit for power, and without an outlandish OBP he’s just not going to like him.

I don’t know if Andrus will hit for 13-15 HR power (or hit a plus number of doubles), but to say that a player does everything but hit for power, then conclude that he has no other secondary skills, that’s pretty weak.

Well, if he is even

a cheap and slightly better hitting Adam Everett, that’d be fine by me. Honestly you fill a slot like that for cheap, and get good defense, and use the money for pitching or a good COF, and that’d be great.

My concern with him is that I hear so much about his defense, but isn’t Andrus leading the Texas league in Errors? I know Errors are a bad stat and all that, but, since there probably aren’t any advanced defensive stats, isn’t it a concern when the guy who’s number one attribute is defense is near the top in errors?

Yes

And that’s why I would resist the temptation to promote him too early. If you call him up next year or start 2010 with him as your SS, he could be not so cheap by the time he’s actually an asset (and that goes for both offense and defense).

It looks like we can’t expect another A-Rod. It looks like we’re stuck with another Alan Trammell-, Robin Yount-, Derek Jeter-, Ozzie Smith-, or Omar Vizquel-type.

by boomer1 on Aug 20, 2008 5:51 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Agreed

Although a post-ASB BABIP in the area of .365 (imprecise, but somewhere in that range) suggests that his post-ASB OBP has been aided just a little bit by luck in the batting average department; that being said, his walk rate has been quite solid since that awful April, and even more so when you remember that he’s still a week away from his 20th birthday and in AA ball.

Of course, I sorta tuned out from Goldstein’s opinions on Andrus when he wrote this back on June 19th:

Stock Report: Down significantly. Scouts are tired of hearing about how young and toolsy he is; he’s at Double-A and it’s time to produce.

But, again…he’s 19 and in AA ball, and more or less holding his own offensively. I’m just not worried about Andrus right now.

by jamcadbury on Aug 21, 2008 4:33 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

when did Arias

have a .380 OBP? Or draw walks in 8-9% of his plate appearances? Andrus is no Arod, but he’s not Arias either. Gil put up somewhat similar numbers at 19 — but he did it in the Sally league, not in AA.

From a guy who’s been psyched on him at points, I couldn’t be more meh’d out on John Whittleman.

Here’s hoping he’s not a headcase or injured or otherwise not cutting it. That guy can command the strike zone even when he’s off, but it still gets uuuugly.

All is not lost...

In his 29 game showing in Bakersfield in 2007, John Whittleman definitely raised expectations with a line of .240/.372/.413. So yeah, going .257/.370/.392 in ‘08 probably gives you a case of the “Mehs”. But keep in mind that he’s 21, and using the Scott Lucas data (the online Bible on the subject), he’s younger than at least 83% of High-A Ball. And if asked to repeat next year in Bakersfield, using our Sacred Text, he’d still be younger than 62.8% of his peers.

That's a good point

Although I would caution that a 22-year-old with such a high pedigree in High A is starting to push it a bit, and most minor leaguers in High A never reach the majors to begin with.

by t ball on Aug 20, 2008 7:19 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

no way he repeats imo

you have to question the ceiling for a high draft pick he stays for 1 1/2 yrs at each level without making a significant jump at any of them. Also, he raised his average to, well, average, only in th last month it seems and his power # s and rbi totals are much worse than last year. By those measures there is not alot to get excited about…

by Goyogringo on Aug 20, 2008 6:57 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If Andrus & Borbon....

end up with a good average, plus speed, and plus defense at two premium positions then I would be fine with that. He acts as if a slick fielding SS and CF who steals 40 bags and hits close to .300 with a .330-.340 OBP is nothing to be excited about. I don’t get it.

by erikj07 on Aug 20, 2008 3:17 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If they steal

10 bases in 19 attempts, like Borbon has in AA, that would make them useless.

I’m not sure hitting 300 in the minors projects to hitting 300 in the majors.

So right now...

He’s struggling on the base paths. He was 36 for 43 at stealing bases Bakersfield. If you’re placing wagers on any given prospect, it’s rare that you’d take even odds, but I think you’re using a pretty small amount of information to rule out a guy who’s in the youngest fifth of his league (although, to be fair, Double-A does have its share of journeymen) and is starting to show that his bat is catching up to the glove we keep reading about.

agreed EJ07

and i really think that as we see the game become less and less about steriods and power, we will see the other assets (speed, fielding, pitching) become more and more valuable. we’ve already seen that happening to a certain extent.

i also think a lot of these prospect guru’s would have been the types to say the prospect ricky henderson didnt have enough power so he isnt a complete hitter and that he probably wouldnt be more than a bottom of the order guy.

This comment from Goldstein seems Beavan-topical
Brian (brooklyn): You cant teach velocity but cant improved mechanis (learned) increase velocity?

Kevin Goldstein: Actually, and quite often, improved mechanics create LESS velocity, because they take a lot of the violence out of the delivery, which can be the cause of velocity — it’s a slippery slope. Improved command and control? sure. But velocity, not really.

I tend to think that this is more what has happened to Beavan than fatigue. We’ll see I guess.

by Brett Perryman on Aug 20, 2008 3:37 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

what he calls violence

is just speed of movement. yes, pitching is an explosive activity. slowing em down just stresses the arm more (and lowers velocity). slow and controlled does not = improved mechanics.

by SteveP on Aug 20, 2008 3:45 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Whatever it's called

They’ve altered Beavan’s delivery in a manner that is more asthetically pleasing and that they think reduces his potential to injure himself, and that has corresponded to a season long drop in velocity. I don’t think it’s a coincidence.

Offense doesn't doubt me, but my first and primemost thing is defense and punt return and kickoff return

i get a little concerned

about how all the pitchers today have to pitch a certain way or its wrong. pitching didnt used to be like that and im not sure the answer to pitching is like an answer to a math problem. there is no absolutes in anything really, and to think that every pitcher has to have the same mechanics and they must be perfect or it should be altered, i just have a huge problem with.

its kinda like our pitching dev. system, why is it that every kid learns a 2 seamer, a change and then a slider, in our system even arm angle is like that. arent each individual pitchers makeup and body different. some kid might have the makeup and ability to have the best slurve in baseball or the best cutter in baseball or the best 4 seamer in baseball and we wouldnt know it b/c we treat all the pitchers the same.

that worries me a ton with our dev. and after danks and his cutter and volqueso and his arm slot change, it really really worries me.

one of the things said

i think in Grant’s mailbag, was that nolan would “simplify” the pitching instruction. hopefully that will take the focus away from uniform delivery styles, etc.

by SteveP on Aug 20, 2008 4:04 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That's philosophy is fine...

…if you are only targeting a particular type of pitcher and putting them in the same program. Like the Cardinals who only draft guys that meet a certain mechanical criteria. However, we seem to do the right thing and draft/LA sign the best available talent and then try to make them meet a certain mechanical criteria, which like you say, makes no sense. Every body type is different. Every guy has an arm slot that he is most confident and effective in. Some guys aren’t best suited to be a sinker/slider guy. It scary as hell when the future of the orginization is basically in their hands.

It’s more of a case to case basis…and by the way, improved mechanics is the OPINION of that particular team and their ‘pitching people’…

to me, abortion is not a religious issue, it's a common sense one...

by Longhorn on Aug 20, 2008 4:02 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I tend to agree with you

How else would you explain Chris Young’s jump when he was like 25 and had just worked extensively on mechanical changes with our minor league instructors? How about McCarthy? Just like changing something mechanically can take away velocity, reversing that in essence can add it back so that you’re closer to reaching your maximum velocity. Heck, maybe you make a mechanical adjustment that adds velocity because it takes away movement.

But I do think that what he is describing fits Beavan’s scenario, and I think that while he is surely fatigued, his connection of the two is mostly wishful thinking.

In alot of ways he kinda loses the benefit of the doubt now in most scoutingvcircles and would have to perform even better than last year to get t he same type of interest

Add to the fact that he will heavily scrutinized now, with scouts not just asking how does he match up with the other college arms, but should even be considered 1st round talent

Mention of another metroplex kid in Callis' chat
Lou (Boulder, CO): Jim, thanks for taking the time to answer questions today. Can you provide some information on last minute Red Sox sign, Carson Blair? Late emerging prospect who will take Kelly’s spot when Kelly becomes a full-time pitcher next year, or just organizational filler?

SportsNation Jim Callis: Well, you don’t pay $200,000 for just organziation player. He wasn’t highly touted, in part because a foot injury slowed him as a junior. He has some size, strength and athleticism and projects as a third baseman. Hey, I had him ranked at No. 104 on my Texas prospect list as part of our Draft Preview!

Blair went to Liberty Christian in Argyle and signed about as late as you can sign. He was in the same district as Rangers’ draftee Matt Thompson (Arlington Grace Prep).

Good point though

Every single one of these guys is at the very tail end of his career too.

Offense doesn't doubt me, but my first and primemost thing is defense and punt return and kickoff return

Yep...

the Rangers should be able to find good deals for at least 2 of their 4 catchers. Just wonder how much JD will want in return.

right

I should have added that there aren’t that many and they don’t have nearly as much value as our catchers do for various reasons

Catchers

Wondering if the added draft pick cost of signing a Type-A player would make the trade market more attractive and thus help the Rangers…

catchers

The only type A catcher is Varitek and hes only a type A if Boston offers arbitration. Seeing as how he makes 10 mil already and arbitration you can’t go down by more than 20% I doubt they will. The only way they do is if its a good faith thing since he is their captain and all but you would have to think he would accept if they did.

Pudge

Baseball Musings had a link up today that said Pettite asked not to pitch to Pudge after the first time…Yankees might still be looking for a solution at catcher if Posada can’t come all the way back.

FWIW

I issued a few final thoughts regarding the B-Mac situation over here.

Included is a very telling quote from McCarthy himself (which may or may not have been overlooked by some here) that would seem to validate to an extent what Hindman, myself and others have been preaching:

"Their big thing was getting me on my back leg and making sure I used it. I had become a really tall-and-fall pitcher and I had taken my legs out of it completely, and a guy with my size and body type, that puts way too much stress on my arm, and I don’t have the muscle or frame to support all that.

So if I’m not using every bit of everything I can with my mechanics, everything is going to fall apart. That was kind of like the early link that set everything else in motion."

Given that it was apparently Mark Connor that induced those changes in the first place, that would seem to equate to a thinly veiled condemnation of his former pitching coach’s alterations to his delivery. But, hey, maybe I’m just reading too much into it.

If all this proves to be true

Then I admit that I have grossly underestimated the capacity for ignorance of “profession baseball people”.

Joey

Just scanned your article and also the one about the inverted W arm action, which I have always referred to as scap loading. Good stuff. I see you came across Paul Nyman. Man that takes me back. I remember having a few exchanges with that guy neary a decade ago. Talk about making stuff up along the way.

what was the timing?

of the BMac-Nolan bullpen session, as compared to Connor’s firing?

Just after I think

because Hawkins and Connor were there, too (though that point seems unmentionable in accounts of it).

Connor?

Do you mean Colburn? And that quote makes me want to kick Connor’s head off. Complete and utter crap to ruin a pitcher like that.

ironically

“tall and fall” was (I believe) coined by Tom House and was promoted by Nolan in his Pitcher’s Bible.

OT: Clay Buchholz

He is getting rocked every time he takes the ball. 7.47 ERA since his callup in early July (6 starts) and allowing a line of .318/.397/.574 – and that is before tonights 2.1 ip, 5 er outing.

Wonder what is wrong with him, and wonder how much Boston’s patience has been worn thin?

Interesting discussion on BBTF

Here: http://www.baseballthinkfactory.org/files/gamechatter/discussion/boston_red_sox_73_53_baltimore_orioles_60_65_wednesday_august_20_2008_705pm/P100/

Somebody mentions the Red Sox altered his arm slot when he was sent down with the intention of improving his fastball command and he’s gotten worse since…there’s also some talk about his meteoric rise last fall perhaps going to his head, so a combination of mechanical/mental problems may be in play right now…

I guess that makes him an interesting buy-low candidate (though I’m not sure why Theo would want to deal him), but whatever.

by jamcadbury on Aug 20, 2008 10:06 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

depends on how

much the Sox want Teagarden. If they believe in him and think he’s the answer they need behind the plate then parting with Buckholtz, especiallly since they have Lester, Bowden, and Masterson isn’t the end of the world. Texas would presumably have to add something else but if Theo believes Taylor’s their guy…

by Hull Fan on Aug 20, 2008 10:19 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Sounds like

the Rangers aren’t the only team messing with mechanics unsuccessfully. I seriously doubt this makes him a buy low candidate in the way Homer Bailey is, though.

Homer Bailey

I really hope JD will make some offers for him this offseason. Any chance they can make a Salty/Laird for Bailey swap?

by jcir454 on Aug 21, 2008 7:59 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Baily and Buchholz

I’d at least make the call on both. I am shocked at some of the things being said by Boston fans (and others) right now concerning Buchholz. Many think he’s lost it or needs a change of scenery just like they’re saying about Bailey. I don’t see it myself, but I’m making that phone call to Boston anyway along with the Reds.

by t ball on Aug 21, 2008 1:27 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I heard differently

I read on SoSH that his arm slot was altered to allow him to keep the same release point on his pitches.

I mentioned this at the end of the Gamethread but it would be nice (although I doubt it happens) if we could put together a package around Salty/TT for him. His stock seems to have dropped quite a bit (he was optioned to AA after tonight’s outing) and, to me at least, he’d be a significantly better buy-low candidate than Bailey.

That being said, I don’t think Boston trades him unless they’re really blown away.

by LiamP on Aug 20, 2008 11:22 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

blown away

I don’t even want to speculate on what it would take in addition to Teagarden, who probably has more value than Salty to Boston.
