10th Best Ranger Ever Community Project

Congratulations to Charlie Hough on being named the eighth greatest Texas Rangers player ever by narrowly edging out Kenny Rogers 46-41 in the tie-breaker vote. As consolation, Rogers makes it to the ninth slot.

Our list so far:

  1. Ivan Rodriguez  1991-2002
  2. Juan Gonzalez  1989-99, 2002-03
  3. Nolan Ryan  1989-93
  4. Rafael Palmeiro  1989-93, 1999-03
  5. Alex Rodriguez  2001-03
  6. Rusty Greer  1994-2002
  7. Michael Young  2000-08
  8. Charlie Hough  1980-90
  9. Kenny Rogers  1989-95, 2000-02, 2004-05

Now it's time to decide who the 10th greatest Ranger player ever is. I would suggest judge it the same way you would evaluate MLB players over a career, but consider their careers were only as long as the years and games they played with the Texas Rangers. Consider not just best seasons, but total contribution, and perhaps a bit of profile.

If there's anyone not on the ballot who you think should be considered as the 11th best Ranger, please let me know in the comments.

Write-In Votes

If there's someone not on the list who you want to vote for, please vote "OTHER," then write your vote down in a reply. If you label that reply as "Write In" it will be much easier for me to find. Thanks!

10 may be an arbitrary number. . .

. . . but Buddy Bell HAS to be in the top 10. Has to be.

Off Interest on Pete O'Brien

I’ll repost this for the interest primarily of the LSB member who mentioned O’Brien was one of his favorites and wanted to see him on the ballot.

In doing some revisionist MVP voting I noticed his defense year to year seemed not just good but great (well behind Keith Hernandez at the time, but that’s not fair). Completely concidentaly today, I noticed in this thread at Baseball Fever that Matt Sounders, a sabermetrician who I have a lot of respect for, ranks him as the second best defensive first baseman ever.

I thought that was pretty neat.

(BTW, he ranks Pudge as the best catcher, but that’s not too much of a surprise. Bell was also up there among third basemen.)

This exercise makes me a little sad

It’s like the Rangers Hall of Fame thing. Once you get passed the first few you really have to start stretching to pick guys.

Bell frustrates me MUCH more.

That said, there’s a whole lot of closeness at this point.

Sundberg

Truly he must be in the top 10. He was the original best Ranger ever. If it hadn’t been for Pudge, he would be the best catcher ever to play for Texas.

I think what this really says is

that Michael Young and Rusty Greer shouldn’t have been top ten. I like Mikey a lot, and was a huge Rusty Greer fan, but guys like Buddy Bell, Jim Sundberg, and Fergie Jenkins deserve to be in far more.
