Obama/Biden ticket it is....
http://news.yahoo.com/story//ap/veepstakes
CNN is covering the story as well on the tube.... seems to balance the ticket somewhat providing in areas Obama maybe lacking in terms of foreign policy experience as well as tenure in in the senate. If he keeps from sticking his foot in his mouth, he may be able to gain some of those moderate democrates that perhaps are on the fence. I like biden, im not sure i want him as being a lunatic away from being leader of the freeworld, but present me with a better option i say.

So, I know not everyone
is going to agree with the “theory” that its important to “balance the ticket”… but does a relatively liberal US senator from Delaware really do much for Obama? I guess he adds a little foreign policy credibility to a democrat ticket, and a lot of experience. I’m a Conservative, so I’m curious to those that are leaning towards voting for Obama…
How much does Biden do for you?
"that suzuki guy should go back to making cars" - My girlfriend after C.J.'s close in game 2
Well, for me...
…I like the pick. I think it’s the “safe” pick, if there is such a thing. He’s an excellent debater, putting the onus on McCain to find someone who can match up with him in the VP debates. He’s got tons and tons of foreign policy experience, which is where McCain was really attacking. And beyond that, he should be an excellent attack dog for Obama. If his “The only things that come out of Rudy Giuliani’s mouth are noun, verb and 9-11” is any indication, the Obama campaign is about to hit back and hit back hard.
I think it’s a good choice. I think it also shows the confidence that Obama has in his chances to carry Indiana and Virginia. It would have been easy to say “We’ll take Tim Kaine so Virginia goes blue” or Evan Bayh with Indiana. He didn’t do that, which is an interesting move. It also reminds me of the ’92 election, the last time the Dems won big, when they abandoned the idea of balancing the ticket regionally and ended up picking two Southerners (Clinton from Arkansas, Gore from Tennessee).
All I know is that with Biden in the race, there is going to be a lot more attacking of McCain coming soon.
Overall, though, I like the choice.

Yep...
I love it. I’m a big Biden guy and I think the experience he brings is what Obama needed the most. As you said, Joe isn’t afraid to pull punces either. I love how straight forward he is.
Great dem ticket in my opinion. I would have loved to flip them with Biden as the nominee and Obama the VP but it was clear in the beginning that Joe had no chance to win the nomination. Now if they can just show that they have a pair and not let the republican smear machine run them through the wringer during the campaign I will be a happy man.

But the way our country is...
don’t you think a regionally unbalanced ticket from the south, for democrats is a lot more effective than a regionally unbalanced ticket from the north? I mean, a lot of the north-eastern states are still a foregone conclusion for the democrats, no matter how you look at it.

I have mixed feelings about it
He’s one of my favorite Democrats, but the guy is a little on the volatile side. They seem like completely different personalities to me, which I guess could be either a good or bad thing. I guess the thinking is he’d be good for campaigning, like ghtd said, and also good as part of the government.
I suppose I don’t really have a problem with it.
Obama/Biden
How can Obama honestly claim he’s some sort of agent for change and that he can break the partisan gridlock of Washington, and pick one of the longest-serving, most liberal senators? Obama is a hypocrite like all the rest of them.

well,
I don’t know what your definition of Washington insider is, but Biden is pretty clearly a liberal democrat who doesn’t have much of a record of working across party lines for change.
by Randy Richardson on Aug 23, 2008 2:53 AM CDT up reply actions
Wrong.
He worked with a diverse group last year, including Sam Brownback, who’s about as far on the other side of the aisle as it gets, to include his Federal Iraq amendment to the Defense Authorization bill.
This year he’s worked with Dick Lugar to provide additional Pakistani aid in order to alleviate some of the major procedural problems there.
Last year he also co-sponsored a bill with Orrin Hatch to strengthen cyber-crime laws. Personally, I thought it was a mediocre attempt at a good idea, but that’s really beside the point.
Those are just a few examples off the top of my head. I would never argue that he’s a DINO, but to say that he’s some mindless puppet who never values the input or ideas of others seems, to me, to be incorrect.

Biden
Come on, I didn’t say he never worked with Republicans. Those are fairly politically neutral examples.
I don’t think he’s a mindless puppet either, he’s obviously an intelligent guy who is a solid senator. I just don’t think Obama, “change”, and Biden go together. I think Kaine would have been a better choice. Who cares that Biden has Nat Sec experience? That’s what a Sec of State, NSA, etc are for.

Not working with republicans = change
Since the nations horrendous mistake of electing Reagan in 1980, the GOP has totally screwed up the country. For 30 years. The party has no good ideas at all. I’d much rather not have someone with much experience working with the immoral GOP.
I'm not going to argue with you about Reagan
because it doesn’t seem like there is anything that can be said to deter you from that stream of thought…
But you just completely discount the Contract with America in 1994? The Republicans have no ideas? I’d agree with that about today’s party… but that’s sort of the case with both parties right now. But you think the 1994 Republicans had no ideas?
"that suzuki guy should go back to making cars" - My girlfriend after C.J.'s close in game 2
I'm referring to good ideas.
From the time Reagan took down the solar panels, to the time he supported Islamic terrorists unnecessarily against a dying Soviet Union, to the time he unnecessarily plunged us a couple of extra trillion into debt to unnecessarily bring down the dying Soviet Union slightly quicker, to the politics of personal destruction they perfected over 8 Clinton years, to the USA Patriot Act, Iraq War, and finally “drill everywhere but for gods sakes don’t support conservation!”, they are a party opposed to everything I stand for.
you said for 30 years...
and no good ideas… I wasn’t arguing whether or not they had bad ideas…
everyone in the history of the earth has had bad ideas. I was saying that it is unreasonable for you to say that they have had no good ideas.
"that suzuki guy should go back to making cars" - My girlfriend after C.J.'s close in game 2
30 years goes back to Reagan.
Should I have said 98% bad ideas?
I agree with the GOP on virtually no issues that are of dispute.
I used to be closer to them on a few issues, but the Dem’s have since moved right on most of those (guns, trade) but that’s about it.
Nuclear power is probably the ONLY issue I’ll agree with the GOP more on.
Drill everywhere
Yeah, the GOP ALWAYS wants more drilling, less conservation, and no other alternatives.

I agree
With your last sentiment, but I just think you’re falling into the easiest rhetorical trap out there.
It’s seemed that whenever ANYTHING happens in the Obama campaign, somebody pipes in with the obligatory, “I thought you were about ‘change’.”
The fact is, Obama had to pick a vice-president, he has to play the game of getting elected, and I honestly don’t think eitherof those things are exclusive of “changing” the political climate. Now, I don’t think that it’s a very likely event, but I can’t place the blame for that at Obama’s feet.

I must have missed the Reagan memo
where ‘liberal’ became a go-to term for ‘bad political leader.’ It’s funny how a word for such a benign set of collective political beliefs has become borderline slanderous to use in any context. It certainly shouldn’t be any more ‘dirty’ a word than ‘conservative’ is. It’s a bland, over-simplified way of writing off an entire politician with one word, rather than analyzing the individual. It’s why I hate both of the words.

I used the word to describe Biden as being to the left of the average Democrat. Nothing derogatory about that.
by Randy Richardson on Aug 23, 2008 8:39 AM CDT up reply actions
I hate to boil it down to words too...
but you have to acknowledge the usefulness of labels. I don’t mean to cause any problems, but is it just me, or do left-leaning people tend to hate labels more than right-leaning people? Maybe its the result of right-leaning people working towards making the word “liberal” a dirty word, but if you don’t like the use of the word then to some degree, you’re accommodating the connotation!
He obviously doesn’t like liberal-democrats, that is clear in his connotation, but why do you have to hate the phrase? Why should liberal-democrat make you feel any worse than conservative-republican makes me feel? (that’s how I label myself).

well, no one called Biden a socialist
in this discussion, but I suppose you’re talking about people calling Obama a socialist.
My point in this discussion was more that people seem more sensitive to the phrase “liberal-democrat” than to the phrase “conservative-republican”
and the most interesting thing to add to that… is that it is so unpopular to be a republican right now.
"that suzuki guy should go back to making cars" - My girlfriend after C.J.'s close in game 2
Dems need to work on marketing
and find a way to spend “Big Borrowing” conservatives the same way “Big Spending” is tied to Democrats.
After all, the Repubs proved in 2000-2006 that they don’t spend less than the Dems. They just piss it away on different things. Bridges to Nowhere, Giveaways to Agribusiness, more Medicare entitlements. Republicans are every bit as fond of bloated government as Democrats, they just want their friends getting the kickbacks.

hah...
well I have no arguments with your statements there… there is a virus in Washington, and there are very few prescriptions for it. Obama isn’t going to be any better than McCain when it comes to spending/borrowing… if anything, McCain should be appealing in that he thought the Bush Tax Cuts were irresponsible with increased spending, and that he is a pretty strong and consistent opponent of pork spending!
"that suzuki guy should go back to making cars" - My girlfriend after C.J.'s close in game 2
McCain
has been saying there won’t be new taxes. There is a lot of blasting of Obama for his new taxes.
Personally, I’d rather see one of the candidates come out with the spending they plan on cutting, but both are mum about that because realistically both candidates are going to spend like drunk sailors on shore leave.
I think McCain has the easier message to sell. After all, a lot of Americans are Dumb enough to believe you can spend money without assessing taxes, and it all works out. It’s easy to sell Santa Claus and the Tooth fairy in this country.

if anyone
had the nerve to cut spending, I’d be excited, republican or democrat. Neither will do it, but I think you’re more likely to see spending controlled by McCain than Obama. Of course… you are right, Obama might do more to cut the gap…. but it’s a matter of perspective on how you want to get there.
"that suzuki guy should go back to making cars" - My girlfriend after C.J.'s close in game 2
Well,
I used to be able to buy that, til 2000-2006. Now im voting Dem because at least there will be offsetting taxes to the spending.
If McCain wants my vote, he could make a list of where he is going to cut $50-$100 billion annually.
Barring that, I’ll go with the more sane fiscal approach of paying for what you spend.

Using resources to stimulate the economy is a critical feature of modern government. That’d be nearly impossible with a strict balanced budget requirement, especially when you consider that increased taxes in other growth areas will make the currency sluggish already.
Also, a consumption tax is such a bad idea.
by brettgardner on Aug 23, 2008 9:59 AM CDT up reply actions
I never said
that there should be a strict balanced budge requirement, however, there should be as many years of surplus as there are deficit. The only way consistend deficits are sustainable is through devaluation of the currency.
There is nothing wrong with consumption taxes. They are used all over the world, and in most states in this country.

Right...
And a national consumption tax would be placed on top of those state taxes, only adding to their regressive nature and making it more difficult for lower-income families to survive.
What other taxes would levy upon all of us in the name of fiscal responsibility? Energy? Internet? Gas?
by brettgardner on Aug 23, 2008 10:36 AM CDT up reply actions
yep!
sales taxes are very regressive. most people that engage in the argument understand it, but for those of you that don’t get it… low-income households spend a higher percentage of their income on taxable sales goods, relative to high-income households. And it makes sense if you think about it, a household that makes 30k is going to spend say… 10-15k just on consumption? so nearly 50%… A household that makes 200k isn’t going to spend 100k on consumption goods. There is only so much you can spend on clothing and cars in a year.

Mar 1996 UNSCOM teams are denied immediate access to five sites designated for inspection. The teams enter the sites after delays of up to 17 hours.
17 Sep 1997 While seeking access to a site for inspection declared by Iraq to be "sensitive", UNSCOM inspectors witness and videotape the movement of files, the burning of documents and dumping of ash-filled waste cans into a nearby river.
Oct 1997 UNSCOM completes the destruction of additional, large quantities of chemical weapons related equipment and precursors chemicals. Iraq had previously denied that part of the equipment had been used for CW production. Only in May 1997, on the basis of UNSCOM’s investigations, did Iraq admit that some of the equipment had indeed been used in the production of VX.
feb 1998: "team of UNSCOM international experts conclude unanimously that Iraq has still not provided sufficient information for the Commission to conclude that Iraq had undertaken all the disarmament steps required of it in these areas"
8 Apr 1998 The report of the biological weapons TEM is transmitted to the Council (S/1998/308). As with the other TEMs, the experts unanimously conclude that Iraq’s declaration on its biological weapons programme is incomplete and inadequate.
14 Jul 1998 As a consequence of the high-level talks between the Deputy Prime Minister and the Executive Chairman in June 1998, a team of UNSCOM international biological experts is assembled in Baghdad to review, for the third time, Iraq’s declaration on its biological weapons programme. The experts conclude that the declaration (on outstanding disarmarment)
is not verifiable.
12 Aug 1998 The Executive Chairman informs the Security Council (document S/1998/767) that, in addition to halting all disarmament activities, Iraq’s actions with respect to monitoring have impinged on the effectiveness of the monitoring system and the Commission could not continue to provide the Security Council with the same level of assurances of Iraq’s compliance with its obligations not to reestablish its proscribed weapons programmes.
31 Oct 1998 Iraq announces that it will cease all forms of interaction with UNSCOM and its Chairman and to halt all UNSCOM’s activities inside Iraq, including monitoring. The Security Council, in a statement to the press, unanimously condemn Iraq’s decision to cease all cooperation with UNSCOM.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scott_Ritter
Commentary in the post-inspection period
Scott Ritter speaks at SUNY New Paltz on March 16, 2006.In 1999, Ritter wrote Endgame: Solving the Iraq Problem – Once and For All in which he reiterated his claim that Iraq had obstructed the work of inspectors and attempted to hide and preserve essential elements for restarting WMD programs at a later date. However, he also expressed frustration at alleged attempts by the CIA to infiltrate UNSCOM and use the inspectors as a means of gathering intelligence with which to pursue regime change in Iraq – a violation of the terms under which UNSCOM operated, and the very rationale the Iraqi government had given in restricting the inspector’s activities in 1998.
In the book’s conclusion, Ritter criticized the current U.S. policy of containment in the absence of inspections as inadequate to prevent Iraq’s re-acquisition of WMD’s in the long term. He also rejected the notion of removing Saddam Hussein’s regime by force. Instead, he advocated a policy of diplomatic engagement, leading to gradual normalization of international relations with Iraq in return for inspection-verified abandonment of their WMD programs and other objectionable policies.
Ritter again promoted a conciliatory approach toward Iraq in the 2000 documentary In Shifting Sands: The Truth About UNSCOM and the Disarming of Iraq, which he wrote and directed. The film tells the history of the UNSCOM investigations through interviews and video footage of inspection missions. In the film, Ritter argues that Iraq is a “defanged tiger” and that the inspections were successful in eliminating significant Iraqi WMD capabilities.5 (For more see below under “Documentary”.)

I wonder if theres ever been a politics sub thread at LSB
Where liberals didn’t get at least the last five mean spirited posts.
The censoring urge is so strong in liberals..look at their constant campaign against Fox News across the internet..
That's a fairly prejudicial take, slc.
Obama is going to need a lot of things to break his way in order to win the election.because I don’t think this country has progressed to the point where a black man can become president. Unfortunate but that’s the way it is.Obama got hammered in several big states by HRC and a big reason why was the color of his skin.
How has this country responded when Democrats have put eastern uber liberal political insiders on the ticket in the past? Kerry – loser. Lieberman – loser. Dukakis – loser. Ferraro – loser. Muskie – loser. Jeeeez, how many times has the Democratic party rejected Biden when he tried to be President? Seems like he was running every four years and usually done by the end of January. Quite frankly, he doesn’t help Obama in any way other than in New England and the far northeast but Democrats probably have those states in the bag without Biden.
As for the Republican party, my choice for McCain’s VP would be Condoleeza Rice (very qualified and it would make libs shit the bed) but I’d be okay with Romney as well. Some of us have progressed to the point where we don’t hold a man’s religion against him.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
Romney would be a disaster.
I think Rice is interesting, but that’s a ticket with a fairly narrow agenda… national security.
HRC did well largely because of middle-age white women, old (and now stale) political ties, and unions. The only trouble for Obama will be middle-age white women. Unions are pretty much meaningless on the national scene.
But, really, the reason Obama has a better chance to win than McCain is that more Democrats will vote than Republicans. it will only have a little to do with Obama. Once the party sees the chance to gain an advantage in the Legislature and the White House it’s hard to imagine a scenario that would keep Dems from the polls.
Republicans have lost their conservative Christian base. I’m not sure they’ve found a new group to fill in their numbers at the polls.
Go Rangers!
Middle-aged white women
are what helped carry BClinton both times and I think there are a lot of Democratic white males (Hispanics as well) that are going to have a difficult time voting for Obama as well. That happened throughout the primary season.
The race card is going to be played in this election just like it was between HRC & Obama and it has a chance to wreak havoc in the Democratic party.
Another thing, although HRC falls under the northeast liberal umbrella mentioned earlier, I think if she was on the ticket, Obama would win the election by double figures. She’d help a great deal in the hispanic vote and middle aged white women.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
I think Hillary would've made a winning ticket.
Bill could’ve become a massive distraction and potentially someone who could undermine Obama’s (and Hillary’s) ability to lead. I like Biden better in the long haul.
Biden will help out with white middle-class males.
The race card… um, that term is way overused in this election. It’s not the race card to point out that his run at a presidency is historic because of his skin color.
But, really, Obama just needs to avoid missteps. The Democrats are going to come out in bigger numbers than the Republicans. I can’t see any Republican VP that will change that. I can’t see McCain beating Obama with Independents by a large enough margin, even with wayward Hillary-ites, to make up the difference.
Go Rangers!
I don't think
Hilary brings anything but negatives to the ticket.

Why??
I see McCain winning from getting most of Hillary’s supporters. If she had been Obama’s VP, at least she could have encouraged some of her voters to vote Democrat.

well, the state Republican parties
did orchestrate a lot of gay marriage bans, Bush prevented expansion of embryonic stem cell research, late-term abortion… they were the driving force for a lot of social conservative issues.
But they didn’t address enough mainstream middle-class issues, issues that a majority of people in this country would agree with the Republican party on in ideology, but they don’t take any action.

LDS
I’ve known several Mormon families here in Texas, and they’ve been some of the nicest people you’ll ever meet.
A Mormon candidate wouldn’t bother me, but with the FLDS being such a major story nationally over the past year, I suspect many people in this country would take one look at Romney (or any other LDS candidate) and think “he’s one of those weirdos who dress up like they’re on Little House on the Prairie and marry 12-year-old girls.”
It also doesn’t help that a large number of the prominent Mormon politicians in this country- Romney included- are descended from families who not only practiced polygamy, but were members of Joseph Smith and/or Brigham Young’s inner circle.
"I dont care to debate with a troll." - Sharky
That's what I was hinting at...
in my above post. Getting many people to vote for a republican ticket when the VP is morman would be tough. Do you know what many in the bible belt think of mormons? When I was a kid I got a ton of shit and I wasn’t even going to church at the time. With all the FLDS and polygamy shit going around it would be suicide for McCain to pick Romney. It doesn’t matter to me what religion his VP is, but it may matter to a lot of his potential voters.

It's a good pick.
It takes a bullet out of McCain’s six-shooter.
I think it illustrates Obama’s decision process, which has never been to get a quick fix but to think long term. See his race speech as an example. Obama clearly sees that national security will be one of the top issues of the next president’s agenda and rather than selecting someone that might be able to give Obama a few more votes in a couple of key states he addressed a perceived and probably real weakness.
McCain’s first attack was impotent:
“There has been no harsher critic of Barack Obama’s lack of experience than Joe Biden,” McCain campaign spokesman Ben Porritt said in a written statement.
“Biden has denounced Barack Obama’s poor foreign policy judgment and has strongly argued in his own words what Americans are quickly realizing — that Barack Obama is not ready to be president.”
So, McCain’s argument is that Obama can convince harsh critics to work with him? I don’t think that’s going to convince any swing voters. It might whip up the Republican base a bit, but even at that it’s pretty weak compared to the days of Rove.

Biden will say what he feels and won’t pull punches. He could very well say something that causes controversy. Although I feel like Obama and McCain will do the same before the campaign is over as well.

not a terrible pick
but there might not have been a better pick out there. I would have gone with Nunn and I was warming up to the idea of Reed from Rhode Island. I could see the pitfalls of Reed but not sure what the downfall of Nunn was, other than he flat out refused it.

McCain just had a great month and Obama still has a lead in both the national polls and the EC ( Obama has a tiny lead in Montana and Alaska for christ sakes) . McCain pretty much needs to win 8 or 9 out of the 12 battleground states to pull it out. The democrats have put so many more states in play this year that McCains margin for error is really small.
The latest
National polls show MccAin either tied or leading. That means all those super close battleground states just shifted to McCain.
Also, personally I dont take polls coming from the liberal media (virtually all organized media in the US) at face value, and I dont think anybody else does either. Everybody knows McCain is probably doing a good deal better than polls show at any given moment.
The demographics just work against Obama, that was proved by Hillary, she fucking destroyed him in most primaries where actual people voted (including the record 41 point loss in West V), while Obama cleaned up in Caucuses where the liberal bullies minority ruled.
And yeah, I dont know what poll has Obama leading in Alaska, but trust me, he isnt going to win Alaska.

I just don’t like the idea of taking a guy from a state just because you need to carry that state. Not sure that was the main decision for Kerry in ‘04 but Edwards couldn’t even carry NC for him. I think you should take the best person possible. You can argue if Biden is that choice, but I have no problem with him not being for a “swing” state.

Charming, intelligent and ambitious. “Boob”, to me, does not mean stupid. Richardson struck me as a guy who never cared for developing policy or a long-term vision. He put a bunch of goofuses around him, at least in Iowa, who were essentially little more than “yes” men and college freshmen. They bumbled about and were stunned when just standing there didn’t get them anything.

Three things that I thought might way in his favor
1) Very military friendly and a good command of military-specific policy
2) The “change” motto: while Edwards has served 17 years in congress, his relative obscurity would play much better in a “change” campaign than Biden.
3) He’s George Bush’s congressman; kind of a slap at the Bush Republicans … if there still is such a thing.

All of this was said tongue in cheek
This veep choice just made me laugh. It is just funny that the media went after Biden hard when he stepped in it with his “good, clean, well-spoken…” comments. Biden and our Political Culture
I think Biden will be a solid pick. I think Republicans are happy right now but will eventually be disappointed. Biden is one of the best debaters I’ve ever seen (watch some old meet the press videos). If McCain picks the MN Governor it will be a sad day in the McCain world. I’ve also seen Romney debate before and after watching the Romney-Kennedy debate, I think he would have the same fate. I personally believe that some people are telling pollsters that they won’t vote for Obama because of his lack of experience aren’t telling the real truth. I believe it’s because of his race (I’m not saying all people but some). 48% of the remaining undecided voters were HRC supporters some speculate that these democrats have a hard time because of this. I think Biden needs to make the case that people were scared of JFK because he was a catholic and people of that time believed the Pope was going to take over America. I think Obama shouldn’t characterize himself as a Black American. He is half-white/half-black and he should talk about how he got the best of both worlds. Also, I’m tired of ideologues. These people aren’t educated and they vote. I’m talking about the people who think John Kerry was not a war hero, John McCain is a clone of Bush (McCain actually hates him and McCain’s daughter for a fact didn’t vote for him) and calling Obama the name Obama bin laden. The sad thing is these people actually decide who’s going to win.
Just you wait

semi-OT: Democratic Convention in Denver
I was in Denver last night (I live in Boulder) and everything was geared up for the convention. Cops were on every street corner downtown, and there were herds of 10-12 cops walking down the sidewalk in places. I can’t imagine what it’ll be like starting Monday.
But there’s banners everywhere, and signs. A lot of businesses are getting into the act by putting up clever signs. The best was on the marquee of a nightclub—all it said was “Discobama.” There was a strip club across the street that had on its marquee, “We have the sexiest democrats.”
The coolest part, for me, since I couldn’t get a ticket to Invesco for the big shindig, is that Public Enemy is having a free concert on Thursday at one of the parks in Denver. I’m totally going.
I just hope
McCain picks Romney, then the Repubs are in the drivers-seat. Pawlenty would be ok.

Romney
People think Romney is a good choice on paper. But in the long term people are going to ask questions about Mormonism. Slavery, Polygamy, Warren Jeffs and the magical underpants. This could seriously hurt the campaign. I doubt McCain wants to answer questions on magical underpants.

what in the world
does Mormonism have to do with his policies? I’m a Christian and I am as big of a Romney supporter as one will find. I’m not arguing with your point because it may be true, I’m saying what is people’s problem? It’s a sad day when a candidate is or is not elected for his religion and not because of his policies. The media stole the nomination from Romney and now they’re going to steal his vice presidential opportunity.

too bad your opinion doesn’t reflect consensus:
by Caseys Kiss of Death on Aug 24, 2008 6:22 PM CDT up reply actions
Which is not to say that consensus is Mormon = bad, either
It’s just that there are enough people in the country right now who don’t want to vote for a Mormon in any capacity that it can be damaging. Factor in the fact that Romney’s “sudden conversion” to being pro-life and pro-all-other-Republican-stances doesn’t necessarily sit well with a lot of Americans, either. The evangelical base of America needs to be inspired within their communities to get out the vote and really, really be behind their candidates like they were in ‘04. Romney just does not, and cannot, inspire that level of enthusiasm. His selection wouldn’t come close to putting McCain “in the driver’s seat.” NO ONE buys that. Not even “We Report, You Decide” channel.

Music
60’s were the best by far with the Beatles, The Beach Boys, Bob Dylan, Rolling Stones, Cream, The Who, Hendrix (although I think he’s a tad overrated), . 70’s were okay John Lennon solo music was great, Led Zep and Pink Floyd shined through in this era. 80’s were horrible in my view except for U2. The music died when Lennon got shot— Time Magazine. When Lennon got shot he was starting to make some of his best music. His best song was Grow Old With Me but he never got to finish it. You can listen to the demos on you tube. A little trivia U2 wanted John Lennon to produce their first album.

Best music was from
1968-1976.
A few thoughts…
Rolling Stones during their Mick Taylor period were never better. Sticky Fingers & Exile are considered classics but there are some nice nuggets although there wasn’t as much consistency on Goats Head Soup (Winter, Coming Down Again), It’s Only Rock n Roll (Time Waits For No One, Till The Next Time We Say Goodbye). Not sure how much Taylor contributed to Black & Blue but Hand of Fate is one of my favorite songs, ever.
The Who’s window of greatness was ’69-73 (Quadrophenia may be the greatest album, ever).
Pink Floyd’s run of Dark Side, Wish, and Animals (my favorite) was music at a very high level.
I think Hotel California is still an excellent album.
Neil Young was from another planet during this time. An unequaled talent, have you heard the CD with him live at Massey Hall in Toronto (1972ish?)/
The black artists of that time were making incredible music that stands up today…Marvin Gaye (What’s Goin On is one of the best songs ever written).
Lennon & McCartney’s solo work in early 70’s was very salty.
I’m not one of those cavemen who believe music died in the mid 70’s because there has been great music produced since that time…U2, Pearl Jam, Petty, The Clash but the window of ’68-76 still stands up as the greatest period of music in my life.

There’s an inherent sense of paternalism, if nothing else. You’re making it seem shocking that black people could be making good music.
And why does it matter what color they are? You didn’t preface your admiration of other artists with their race. That’s not to mention that they should be judged the same as anybody else— there were shitty black artists, shitty white artists, and shitty hispanic artists.

you made the brilliant observation/accusation that I was a racist for claiming that the black artists of the 70’s made great music.
You were anxious for some kind of confrontation, got it and now you’re still looking out your earhole because you’re boxed in by your own stupidity and poor judgment.
Learn from your mistake and move on.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
Mmm.
You know, I’m seriously concerned for you, Josey. I know you probably don’t believe it, but I am. Your tendency to turn anything into grounds for violence is a bit telling. Were you abused as a little Outlaw? That’s nothing against your parents, who obviously raised a fine young bigot, but if there was an uncle or somebody else you’re still trying to take your anger out on, there are places to go for help.
I’m just a person you’ll never meet, friend. No need to put up this front. If calling me stupid and mixing metaphors is your coping mechanism, then that’s fine. We’re all here for you, buddy. You can keep insulting me if it suits you. I know people from broken homes have that tendency. Just letting you know, it’s fine.

Why whatever band is playing at either convention has any significance at all. Is that really meaningful with respect to anything election wise? (understated motive: if bands matter, you probably shouldn’t even consider voting)

Really
they don’t matter at all to me (though I do see a mild amount of humor reflected about the stereotypes each party may have relative to the bands they select).
My point is merely that this kid saying “so-and-so is a no-name band because I’ve never heard of them” is like my girlfriend saying that Johan Santana is a shitty pitcher because she’s never heard of him.
by Caseys Kiss of Death on Aug 25, 2008 5:04 AM CDT up reply actions
It doesn't matter
It’s just sort of symbolic. Moveon.org and the DNC didn’t even have to work to pull in some acts that are making very good music in the here and now. Then you have the RNC: some American Idol Star, the Charlie Daniels Band, Beach Boys, and freaking smashmouth.
Some of the acts playing at the Democratic Convention are successful even if they’re not household names, but many are just talented kids in good bands. Many of those guys will end up just like the rest of us in ten years, not millionaires. Most will have gotten jobs and started families. I don’t know if this is the right way to do it, but indie rock is sort of like music populism, maybe?
The bands playing in Denver are symbolic of the present and future. The bands playing in Minneapolis (except for Rage Against the Machine who’s there to protest and it will probably end up a riot) are representative of the status quo.
It’s just an interesting observation. The music isn’t going to change anyone’s mind, although the musicians may inspire their fan base to be a little more active in politics. And the indie rock fan base are mostly democrats…this also gets some of the bands some needed exposure. In terms of electoral politics it means absolutely nothing.

"that suzuki guy should go back to making cars" - My girlfriend after C.J.'s close in game 2
The bands I listed...
They aren’t on the radio. Nothing good is on the radio. That was the implication I made…people with taste in music have to look for it these days because commercial stations give you nothing except crap like smashmouth.
Honestly, there is better music on television ads than there is on the radio.
Rock n’ roll music is alive and well, but the old way of disseminating it is dead. Spend a couple years in Austin and you’ll see that everything is marching on with or without the support of the big record companies. You have to go to Pandora or satellite radio or to shows to find new music. Unfortunately the scene is dead in Dallas. But with the internet good contemporary music can still be found by anyone.
This isn’t a reply to you, but the eighties were a great decade for music. Unfortunately most of the great bands will be overshadowed by the likes of Motley Crue, Poison, and shit like that. The eighties did give us U2, the Clash, Talking Heads, Violent Femmes, REM, etc.
There’s no bad decade for music.
by Black Francis on Aug 25, 2008 9:29 AM CDT up reply actions
i do agree
that you have to go looking for good music now a days, but i’m so damned stubborn, for the most part. I really get by with just listening to 4 bands: Guster, RHCP, The Beatles, Fastball, and then other random good classic song/bands. The only new music I really seek out are when those 3 active bands put something out.

Oh well, McCain is pretty communist anyway, so not like they had a lot to lose. we can be 70% communist with McCain, 90% with HRC. or 100% communist with Obama, they probably figured it was worth the gamble for the extra 10% since they cant “lose” anyway.

I don't believe there is much media bias if any, overall
In this climate anything that approaches centrist will be labeled “socialist” by some.
Yes, reporters mostly vote Democratic. What about editors, though? The people who decide if a story is published and where it will be in the paper? What about Executive Producers from TV News? I realize that Noam Chomsky is far left, but he’s actually done some interesting work on this and provides quite a bit of evidence that the media is biased not based on what it reports, but what it doesn’t report.
Being a natural skeptic, I take everything with a grain of salt (including Chomsky’s work, but at least I’ll read more than one viewpoint). Thanks for the advice, though.
The polls say that, yes, there is division in the party. But they were very, very quick to seize on that in spite of the words that came out of Clinton’s mouth only moments befrore. They very clearly sought out people on the convention floor who’d say something divisive and we saw very little else. To lead ‘Nightline’ with a phrase like “Buyer’s Remorse” was totally irresponsible. After Clinton’s speech they closed the convention for the night and the delegates were all over the place. There wasn’t enough time to come to a conclusion such as that. It was punditry, and of the kind that could only hurt Obama, who is the Democratic Party’s nominee for President. It was damaging AND baseless. Aside from Sharky it is widely seen (rightly or wrongly) that ABC News is leans left. Well, if they do, why in world would they through the Democratic Party nominee under the bus like that? Even if they liked Clinton more, it makes no sense to do that if you truly lean left.

Experience
Bush only served from 1995-2000 in a elected office but Obama served twice as long in an a elected office. The Republicans are saying that he’s not qualified but he has more qualifications than W did in 2000. So they are either hypocritical or they need to read about W. qualifications in 2000. Obama was a State Senator from 97-04 and as a U.S. Senator from 2005 until now. Also, take in the fact he was the editor of the Harvard Law Review. I still think that people are telling the pollsters that the reason they won’t vote for him is because of inexperience but they are really lying it’s all about his race.
Hypocrites?
No, not the republicans.
Besides W’s daddy was president so that’s all the "experience " he needed.
"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates
Wanted to add
That the powers of the Tx Governor is weak. Actually if you know alot about Texas Government you would know that the Lt. Governor in Texas has more power than the actual Governor. That even makes Obama even more qualified than W. in 2000.

one is a C student and other is the first black man to run harvard law review
and you are bringing up what the difference in their intelligence level is?
isnt it obvious? reverse the 2 people and question and their backgrounds and think about what you would say to me.
one is the grandson of a senator, the son of the former head of the CIA and president. he had a silver spoon in his mouth from the day he was born and made C’s all through college. and by his oown characterization was an “average student”
one is from a broken home whose dad left when he was 2 and lived with his grandmother growing up and worked his way to get into college at Columbia then worked in community service for 3 years before realizing he could help more by graduating from harvard law magna cum laude.
which one has proven to have gone through a more to achieve what they have? which one has shown more intelligence doing it?

the backgrounds say a lot about the intelligence of the 2
one has worked from the bottom up. he was a mixed race child of a single mother who had to be on food stamps etc to survive and has worked from community college student to the the first black president of harvard law review to the first non white presidential part candidate in history, the other is a 3rd gen politician who was gifted everything he ever has earned, from his education (which he admitted was average at best), to his oil business, to his business connections to buy the rangers, to his political connections to become governor, to his political connections to become president.
which one has had to use and maximize his intelligence and smarts to get to their lot in life? that was my point. given bush’s lot in life, his family’s background and education, i think that if most other semi intelligent citizens in the USA had the exact same opportunities and connections as bush growing up, they’d be in the same place he is.

Thing is.
EVERYBODY uses political connections to get to the top in politics. That’s really an unfair indictment. Sure, some may use them earlier and more often, but everybody uses them. I really don’t see anything inherently wrong with it, either. Networking, as douchy as it is, is an undeniable verity of the modern world.

i notice you didnt use the word elected president but rather won the presidency. for a presidency that was decided by a supreme court full of judges who his father had a hand in getting there and those judges being the final call in who won.
thats one hell of a network job and also has absolutely nothing to do with smarts or intelligence.
ok put a different way:
you are the owner of a company and you are deciding on 2 possible longterm hires, one guy has come from the background of obama, a single parent family who had to be on food stamps etc to survive and has worked from community college student to Columbia to Harvard Law to the first black president of harvard law review. the other is an admitted average C student at Yale with a network of associates that his father and grandfather (who were also a very successful businessmen for our example) ahve put together.
which would you have more confidence in hiring longterm?

A lot. Narrow holdings are exceedingly common. Also, they did not hold that it “doesn’t have precedence.” It has precedence in 14th Amendment jurisprudence, it’s just not strong.

Bush and Intelligence
You didn’t ask me but I’ll tell you what I think anyway.
You won’t many who dislike his policy as much as I do and at the same time will consider him a smart guy.
I think he probably is smart, but I will qualify it.
The man is a terrible speaker, which is odd because if you can remember, he wasn’t that bad when he was Governor. I don’t know what’s up with that. Whatever…it’s something he struggles with now.
The man clearly has trouble thinking on his feet. I believe he probably does know what ‘sovereignty’ is and always has. He simply couldn’t come up with the answer.
I think he has profoundly poor judgment. Especially in the beginning he surrounded himself with a staff and cabinet that had it’s share of incompetence, misguided-ness, and plain dishonesty.
Anyway, if you compare him to just your average person anywhere in the world, he’s probably going to be smarter than they are. Maybe by quite a bit. Compared to Presidents, however, I don’t there’s any way he’s as smart as most (if any) of them.
Also, many former White House staffers (high level ones) have suggested that Bush is not intellectually curious or interested in details (McClellan being the most recent).
You’ll notice that a lot of things I mentioned above wouldn’t be directly correlated with raw intelligence, but in this context they are appropriate to mention. A President needs to be strong in a lot of areas that Bush isn’t.

Obama has nothing on Bush’s youth. And the Ayers thing is just built by association. It’s no more meaningful to me than is McCain’s being invited to Joe Bonano’s birthday party, or his sudden change from Episcopalian to Baptist last year, or his past adultery that broke up his first marriage, or his wife’s addiction to drugs.

Well I don't think it's quite that simple
You do have FOX in the mix, like Dan says below. You also have all the commentary on the radio all day long, and people do listen to that. Radio talk is overwhelmingly conservative as I’m sure you realize.
Anyway, while those shows are commentary they are often presented as news and they are certainly part of the way information is disseminated, so you have to count them.
Others are really hard to pin down in black and white. Chris Matthews, for example. Widely regarded as a liberal and I think he is, but you can’t just say that’s all there is to it because I’ve watched him absolutely dismantle democrats on his show several times and I don’t even watch it that much.
And then there are there is the financial media. I’m talking about Investors Business Daily and stuff like that. More people read this kind of stuff than you might think, and they are very clearly pro-deregulation and also favor the prevailing views among economists on tax policy, which absolutely leans to the right.
So it’s a lot muddier than most people realize, I think.

Your question...
I asked the same thing worded differently to Knockoutking(?) or Agreen(?) in Sharky’s thread and never got a straight answer other than he’s been president twice.
To answer Knockoutking’s question there is a difference between intelligence and being smart, but that is splitting hairs to a degree. Bush is neither. He’s had everything handed to him, including his above average education that produced very average results. Karl Rove is a brilliant political mind and I hate him for it. Cheney is the same both in the buisness and political field and I equally despise him. That’s not to say I don’t respect them because I do. I just have very different views on most major issues from them.
"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates
I never thought I'd say this
But you guys may be underselling Bush a little. Obviously I don’t know him and given what he’s shown it may appear to some that I’m going out on a limb by saying this, but I think it’s safe to assume he’s not a stupid man. If he were truly a stupid man, would Karl Rove have gotten behind him? I would think he would’ve found someone else.
Is George Bush a fuck up? Hell yes he is. History is going to judge his presidency very, very harshly, I believe.
No, I don’t think he was duped into all this. I will continue to assume that he’s smarter than the average person but not nearly as smart as the average President of the United States. One thing I am sure of is that he should have been smart enough to run this thing better than he has, which actually makes it all the worse.
There’s a lot of difference between a stubborn fool and a total idiot.

ill agree, bush comes from a better background than most (understatement) BUT to be fair if he was as much of a dolt as everyone on here seems to think he is why havent people came out and said our president is a fucking idiot?
as stated above, why do such smart people get behind him?
i am not going to say hes been the “best president everrrrrrrrrrr” but then again the people who say he has been the worst president of all time, ever, in the history of this country, the world dont know either. history judges things strangely. whose to say that the perception of bush in 50 years may be completely different than today? its impossible to say. has he been the best? no. has he been the worst/one of the worst, i dont think anyone can say that at this moment in time.
i also think he is looked upon as lacking intelligence because of who many people compare him to – look at the president right before him (clinton) who is clearly a very smart guy and look at the possible next president (obama) who is also pretty damn smart.
to say that he lacks intelligence is something that someone who has a problem stepping back from their personal views and looking at a situation would say.

"Oh well, McCain is pretty communist anyway,... we can be 70% communist with McCain,"-Sharky
re: to say that he lacks intelligence is something that someone who has a problem stepping back from their personal views and looking at a situation would say."
That argument doesn’t really hold water, considering what I just told you about Cheney and Rove.
Let me be more clear. I don’t think he is a dumb person in a general sense. I’m sure his IQ is above average compared to the general populace. He is just a pretty mediocre guy in general, and as far as Presidents go, he’s at the dumb end of the spectrum.
There have been countless reports of aides being startled and taken aback by his lack of curiousity. And he is notorious for prizing loyalty over competence, also not a prudent tact. Not to mention the fact that he has reportedly been highly averse to contray points of view on his team.
I think his central flaw, however, is that he firmly believes being resolute is the apex of leadership. Once he’s made a decision, he never, ever looks back. That’s poor and foolish leadership, in my opinion.
For my money, A good leader WANTS to hear contrary points of view, and he does not punish the messengers of bad news. He remains vigilantly open to the possibility that there is a better way, and isn’t afraid to say, “New information has come to light. I’ve changed my mind.” And when considering a new hire, his first question should not be “are they loyal,” as the Bush team is known to do, but rather, “what are their qualifications?”
Last week I took a pleasure trip. I drove my wife to the airport.

How smart he is or is not really isn’t the issue. The fact that he’s a stubborn fool rather than a total idiot is what sunk him.

If you would like to respond great, if not that’s fine too. Perhaps you are taking this forum a little too seriously?

Olbermann even felt compelled to make one of his smarmy rebuttal blogs, in between apparantly attempting to censor dailykos diaries from average people, who knew Keith cared about the little people??

Olbermann is an out of control jackass..what an arrogant censoring egomaniacal pig. Methinks it probably wont be too long he’ll be forced out of MSNBC like he was ESPN for being a douche.
He is
Arrogant, smarmy, and douchy, but he’s also the biggest draw on MSNBC. He’s not going anywhere.

Apparantly
Although the MSNBC ratings I looked over on tvnewser sure didnt seem impressive compared to Fox News.
He’ll probably quit in a huff eventually rather than be forced out though, I agree. He doesnt seem very stable.
Joe scarborough?
that guy is a schmuck at best. he came in during the 94 contract for america when any idiot with an® next to his name was winning with a platform of eliminating the dept. of education, dept. of commerce, dept. of HUD, dept. of energy….
Scarborough sponsored a bill to force the U.S. to withdraw from the United Nations, voted against min wage rise to 5.15, cut medicare by 270 Billion dollars.
thats your morning joe…
sorry, but thats the guy your defending.

Those are bad things why again? I’d support all of those, what reasonable person wouldnt?
“My” morning joe btw, you guys are pretty funny.
Voted against a min. wage increase

So what's the deal with Biden's hair?
There’s a lot going on there. There’s a mullet, a combover and a divot in the back of his head that could have only been created with a well-struck 8 iron.
Per Repub VP choices… Given that we have a 72 year old man with a history of skin cancer running for office this is a critical choice because there’s a chance this VP may be called to serve. I want to win the election and I think Condi Rice or KB Hutchinson will mind meld some of the on-the-fence Dems, bring us some of the women voters and bag yet another Republican win in November.

Curious
Does it matter to you that McCain isn’t really on the neo-conservative bandwagon, or is a win a win to you?
by brettgardner on Aug 28, 2008 10:38 AM CDT up reply actions
Who says I'm a neo-conservative?
I simply see McCain as a better option than Obama.
Are you now going to continue with your cowardly bullshit and claim that once again my “inherent paternalism” makes me guilty of racism?
If you do, remember that I wouldn’t mind having either Condi Rice or Colin Powell for that matter on the ticket with McCain.

Condi Rice
I don’t see how she’d help anything. McCain needs to stay as far away as he can from anyone who was ever a part of the Bush White House. That’s where Obama and Biden are going to be hitting him — that he’s strayed from what he used to be and has become to close to what Bush is.
Plus, don’t forget that there is/was a freaking oil tanker named after that woman. That’s just an easy target.
Hutchinson wasn’t in the administration, but I can’t think of a better example of a Bush rubber stamp.
McCain would do well to pick a moderate governor who could criticize not only Obama but also the Bush Administration. If they want to win this election they are going to have to distance themselves from the White House.

i was trying to figure out who McCain can choose to make him a drop dead badass candidate
and i cant think of one. finding a republican who has stood firm on conservative value but isnt a bush crony seems to be the key, but those guys arent close enough to the evangelical right. so he has to get an evangelical in to win those votes and keep his party intact, i dont think that draws in enough votes from dissatisfied voters with a guy too right slanted and too close to bush.
its a hard place to be in. i really dont think the republican party wanted McCain and im not sure he has a strong option as a VP. he’s in a tough place. im very curious to see who he can choose.
he cant choose:
Lieberman (too connected to Gore/Lieberman, too jewish)
Romney (too mormon and you cant have 2 guys that stinkin rich when the economy is in the shitter)
Condi (too bush)
Pawlenty (sp?) (too weak in experience at the VP debates)
Kay Bailey (too bushy)
its a tough spot to be in, i know, as a democrat ive seen more than my fair share of guys no1 really wanted to vote for but we didnt have any other option, ive seen half assed VP options tread out no1 really likes that doesnt really help ya much. it sucks. its a really crummy feeling when your party is in that situation.
this decision is the decision of his life, and im not sure there is a good option available to him.

too jewish? too mormon?
Devil’s advocate worst case scenario evangelical thought:
Lieberman: blah, your attempting to sway to a bunch of people who are hardcore evangelicals who think on judgement day that all jews will burn in eternal hell for not accepting jesus christ as your savior, and your gonna use a jewish guy who was a democrat until 2 years ago, who ran against Bush as a democrat, who is pro choice, and thats the guy your gonna choose to take your place if you die in office?
really?
Romney: your attempting to sway to a bunch of people who are hardcore evangelicals who think on judgement day that all jews mormons will burn in eternal hell for not accepting saying jesus christ was re-resurrected as and indian in north america as your savior? Who was pro choice till he changed his opinion less than 2 years ago, who is also so rich he also causes a disconnect with average poorer republicans, who was the governor of mass a friggin chussetts
really?
If you choose either one of those you isolate a lot of voters your selling the idea to that you arent a moderate who isnt really a republican etc.
if those are your 2 best options, your candidacy is in trouble.
i guess i think he has to choose some1 the media isnt talking about, under the radar who i am missing. both of those dont appeal to the right enough both bring up religious questions you dont wanna answer or be a focus when you are trying to unite the right and bring in moderates.
its almost a no win situation.
it sounds like we will know tomorrow

because the percentage of the evangelical base that believes jews are “Christ-Killers” will be all over Lieberman.

McCain may not be smarter than that
but Lieberman’s got to know that nothing says “Stay at home on election day” to the Republican base like a Pro Choice Liberal Democratic Jew.
I mostly include the liberal in there, because, as the Republican base knows, you can’s say Democrat without saying Liberal Democrat.

Theres a growing number of increasingly left leaning “Republicans” but conservative Democrats seem to be a dying breed.

have you paid attention to the 2006 election results?
half the democrats that came into the senate were conservative democrats.

McCain's VP
I think Pawlenty would be a great choice. Would help with Minnesota’s 10 EV’s, is a safe white male and not any of this Sarah Palin, Condi Rice (or fill in the politically correct minority here) affirmative action bullshit so many conservatives on message boards push.
Would contrast with Obamas awful choice that doesnt help in any state.
McCain needs to continue to differentiate himself as the solid white male ticket that gets the job done. Thats how he’ll beat Obama (and why it would have been a disaster for Obama to pick another minority on his ticket).
But interestingly, some guys on another message board I go to noticed that Liberman McCain google search triggered a small McCain-Lieberman ad from the McCain campaign earlier today, while McCain+any other candidate did not trigger such an ad. It was later removed. But it would be pretty funny if it turns out to be Lieberman (a disaster imo) and those guys scooped the media.
Ouch...
would not be a good decision.

granted I’m not a big politics guy but wasn’t it a Gore/Lieberman ticket in ’00? Why would McCain choose him?
"Mr. Hicks, you watch, I'm going to be a leader on this team." Kinsler
Obamas speech kinda sucks
Not getting the greatest reaction from the crowd.
Obama has a habit of not neccessarily delivering great speeches I’ve noticed, even though thats his repuation.

It’s funny how MSNBC’s normal straight coverage is far more biased than anything coming out of Fox News. I’m not talking about opinion shows like O’reilly, I’m talking about the normal politics coverage. Can Chris Mathews and Olbermann slobber all over themselves to praise Obama any more???
Yet it’s Fox that’s lambasted for bias, natch.
If the other networks, all ten of them, have dropped the pretense of objectivity Fox should too..
I gave Obama an 86 (straight up B)
for his speech….if it was an A the crowd would have been ape-shit (and they weren’t).

looked like they went pretty crazy when obama took on and challenged mccain head on.
that dude gives an incredible speech. my uncle is a pretty hardcore republican and a financial conservative who wont vote for obama but he even stated that he thought obama is a great speaker and that he wished obama shared his ideas b/c he makes him wanna vote for him.
BTW: any1 check out Obama promising to eliminate Capital Gains Tax for small businesses and new technologies?
friggin awesome. those are the type of speaches that actually make my uncle have to think about who he should vote for. btw eliminating capital gains is something i fully support.
