We're one of BP's Games to Watch today.
Matchup: Indians (60-67) at Rangers (63-66), 7:05 p.m. CT
Probable Starters: Jeremy Sowers (84 IP, 6.43 RA, 1.54 WHIP, 44 K) vs. Brandon McCarthy (26 2/3, 3.38, 1.09, 23—Triple-A)
Pythagorean Record: Cleveland, 66-61 (611 RS, 589 RA); Texas, 59-70 (719 RS, 784 RA)
Hit List Rankings: Cleveland, #16; Texas, #22
Prospectus: McCarthy makes his season debut after missing the season to this point with forearm inflammation. PECOTA was not too optimistic heading into the year after a 2007 campaign that netted him all of 6.5 VORP over 100 innings, projecting him for a PERA of 4.78, though the upper levels of his forecast—5.8 K/9, 2.9 BB/9, 1.1 HR/9, and a 3.79 PERA—aren’t too shabby. There is a massive performance split between the lower and upper levels though, as he was forecasted to be a sub-replacement level pitcher from his 10th to 40th percentiles, and of little value until you hit his 75th-percentile forecast.
There’s a lot of pressure on McCarthy for two reasons: first, the Rangers are in dire need of someone, anyone, to show up and give them quality starts to keep their league-leading offense in games, as their rotation has been in a shambles since the year began, ranking dead last in the majors in SNLVAR with 1.3 on the season. Secondly, the pitcher McCarthy was traded for prior to the 2007 campaign, John Danks, has been busy making himself a household name for a playoff-contending club out in Chicago; considering the aforementioned problems with quality pitchers in town, that’s an issue that can’t be ignored, especially when you remember that Edinson Volquez, another member of the Rangers’ vaunted DVD prospect trio, is having himself a fine year out in Cincinnati.

Sorry, I just don't like our odds
I’m not a McCarthy hater or anything, but I don’t expect a lot out of his first start. Plus, Jeremy Sowers? Who? That usually means he’ll dominate.

I checked his game log and he pitched at Angel Stadium twice that year
I recognize the venue from the Del Taco ad… his first start there was 4/4/07, his first start as a ranger, and he went six innings, giving up five runs, three earned. He had one walk, no strikeouts, 13 groundballs and seven flyballs and threw 79 pitches. His next start was 7/15/07, and he went six innings, giving up four runs, three earned. He had two walks and four strikeouts, with nine groundballs and seven flyballs and 95 pitches thrown.

I believe that's from the start at Angel Staduim last year
The game where Tex hit that solo shot in the top of the 10th to give us an extra inning win. B-Mac pitched as well as I think I’ve ever seen him that day – struck out Vlad 2 or 3 times.

And maybe I’m wrong. B-Max pitched twice at Angel Hellhole last year, once on April 4th and once on July 15th.
Now that I think about it, that might be from his April 4th start, maybe right before Connor totally F’d him up.

But to say Josh is not a good defensive CF’er is just downright wrong. I can’t count the number of awesome plays he’s made this year on both my fingers and toes because he’s made so many.

The numbers this season reflect...
…that he’s a below-average defensive CF’er…
And watching him, he doesn’t seem to get great jumps on the ball, which is likely the product of being out of the game for so long.
My feeling is that he’s a real good defensive RF’er who can play CF, but isn’t a defensive asset out there.
He’ll probably be in RF by 2010.

RZR and Dewan's +/-
They both have him well below average.
In terms of DER, the Rangers are near the bottom, and having defensive problems at 2B, SS, and CF would certainly explain a lot of that (along with having, by all the numbers I’ve seen, godawful defense at 3B this year).

Sowers has pitched well since the all-star break but remains an unknown commodity. Long term, he is likely a marginal (4th or 5th) starter in the MLB. If this gives you any indication, but my brother and I joke that whenever Sowers is listed as the SP that the game is hopeless.

Thx
I know all about that feeling of dread.
Sowers might have a decent chance at a W tonight though, considering McCarthy has just worked his way from year-long elbow inflammation and out lineup has not hit lefties that well this year.

Yeah I’ve wondered about McCarthy. He seemed to have great potential when he was with the Sox, then he went to Texas and I have not heard of him since. I hope for your sake he figures it out.

Reyes has pitched relatively well. Though he has been laboring, he has yet to get himself into any sustained trouble in any inning, and no inning has had him give up more than 1 or 2 runs. He has yet to implode but my fingers remain crossed. I think he projects to be another Paul Byrd for us, which isn’t entirely bad.

From Rotoworld:
The notion of Marcum being demoted back to the minors would have seemed absurd in mid-June, when he had a 2.65 ERA and 86/27 K/BB ratio in 98 2/3 innings spread over 15 starts. However, an elbow injury sidelined him for a month and he’s posted a 6.19 ERA and 23/16 K/BB ratio in seven starts since returning from the disabled list. General manager J.P. Ricciardi indicated Saturday that the move is temporary, saying that the Blue Jays plan to “give him a couple starts down in Triple-A just to see if he can get his mechanics back together.” Count on Marcum being back in September, but until then journeyman John Parrish will fill his spot in the rotation.

Wasn’t a bad bunt, but that’s why you shouldn’t bunt… even when you make a good one it’s still unlikely you’ll reach.
We need to hire Chuck Norris to kick the ass of any Ranger fan caught booing one of our young pitchers at the RBiA.

Still a better chance of reaching
By swinging, which gives you the possibility of hitting a line drive.

Okay
Let’s say Brandon Boggs is trying to bunt for a hit, and gets a bunt down…
What do you think the chances are of him reaching?

I'd say around 10%.
But that’s purely guess-timation. I don’t disagree with the idea, but perhaps Boggs isn’t the guy to be doing it. He’s got decent speed, but not reach-on-IF-bunt speed.

say he bunts 100 times
how often do you think he reaches base?
im not sure hed even have a higher OBP at all, and youve obviously eliminated all slugging chances.

I've got a question...
why is Best Damn Sports Show Period still a show? It’s been reduced to a daily clip countdown on some various topic, and occasionally actually has an actual show.
