It's about time we finally see if Cruz can stick in the majors

I have nothing against Ellison, but if we’re gonna start throwing minor leaguers up there, it may as well be those who are on their “last leg” so to speak.

I guess

Boggs will become Bradley’s personal pinch runner.

Nolan Ryan should be the Rangers president, GM, manager and pitching coach.

I've wanted to see this...

for 2 months now. I don’t now if Nellie will ever be anything more than the “AAAA” player some say he is, but his performance this year has earned him another shot at the bigs. You’ve got a month to show you can hit in the bigs Nellie. Do or die time.

Thank God

I have yet to understand the reasoning as to why we wouldn’t bring Cruz up one last time. Ive read the whole “what if he puts up a .260/.315/.430 line, then what do you do with him” question and the answer is simple. Make a decision on him just like we will have to do whether he gets playing time or not. Might as well see if he can put it together up here one last time. I don’t like the fact that Boggs playing time will be reduced significantly, but it will be worth it to see if Cruz can play up here

by erikj07 on Aug 25, 2008 12:24 AM CDT   0 recs

Is it really going to be all that meaningful

if Cruz hits well in September? Expanded rosters, rookie pitchers, diluted talent, no pressure, etc. Not exactly an adequate litmus test.

Robinson Tejeda pitched well in September of ’06, everyone got excited, then he ended up tanking the next year.

by Rangerchick on Aug 25, 2008 12:28 AM CDT   0 recs

That's been my issue as well

It’s better than nothing though, I think. All they actually have to decide is whether he’s worth keeping on the 25 man roster next spring.

Offense doesn't doubt me, but my first and primemost thing is defense and punt return and kickoff return

by zywica on Aug 25, 2008 12:30 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

But wouldn't you agree that with Cruz its probably a mental issue?

Seems that if a guy can put up AAA numbers like he did this year that he certainly has the ability to play at a higher level. If he can have some success at the ML level — even if it is in a slightly tricked up scenario — that would seem to be a positive.

by robert_d_wilfong on Aug 25, 2008 7:59 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Maybe mental

I don’t think it was confidence though. It seemed pretty simple in that the guy simply had holes in his swing. Some of that probably involved laying off breaking stuff out of the strike zone, but I think the question is largely if his adjustments allow him to better deal with weaknesses that major league pitchers exposed. The only way to know for sure was to test him out, but the Rangers’ reluctance to do so in the face of his numbers at AAA makes you think that they haven’t really thought that he’s made those adjustments.

I just don’t think that you can say that a guy – especially one in his late 20’s – having huge success in AAA necessarily means that he can “play at a higher level”. That’s where the whole notion of the AAAA player came from.

Offense doesn't doubt me, but my first and primemost thing is defense and punt return and kickoff return

by zywica on Aug 25, 2008 9:12 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

It always looked to me

like a breaking ball issue. I imagine, even with roster dilution, he will see more breaking stuff. I’d have to see him do something with it before I got excited by his AAA numbers.

Well, what about

Jeff Bailey, Dallas McPherson, Val Pascucci, Jason Hart, J. R. House, Scott McClain, Brad Eldred, Mike Hessman, Tagg Bozied, Chris Richard, Andy Tracy, some guy named Botts etc.? Quite literally, every organization has an older AAAA-type guy who puts up huge numbers in AAA-ball but isn’t able to replicate that in the bigs. Now that Botts is gone, Cruz is our version.

by Rangerchick on Aug 25, 2008 12:58 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

they all have AAAA guys doing pretty well

but what nelson cruz was doing pre-injury was unique. it wasnt just mashing AAA, it was dominance.

the preceding post is not nearly as negative or insulting as you think it is

by DSheppard on Aug 25, 2008 2:17 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

The difference is ...

… that Nelson has not only continued to put up big numbers, but he has also learned patience and sees a lot more pitches and draws a lot more walks than before. Combine that with his ability to mash, and I would say that it is more than fair to give him a last look, with an open mind.

by Melmart1 on Aug 25, 2008 8:47 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Patience

Has he really learned to be patient, or are the AAA breaking balls just worse than big league breaking balls and therefore easier to lay off of? AAA pitchers don’t have the control that major leaguers do so you would expect him to walk more often. My guess is he gets back to the big leagues and looks just like the Cruz of last year. I think he is a AAAA masher, nothing more.

by uthornfan on Aug 25, 2008 10:18 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

While some of it ...

… may very well be that some of the breaking stuff is easier to lay off of, but if that was the only reason, then why didn’t he learn to lay off of them before? Over the course of an entire season, I find it hard to believe that a lack of control from ALL pitchers faced is the only reason he is showing restraint.

by Melmart1 on Aug 25, 2008 11:18 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

AAA

Isn’t this year the third or fourth season he has been in AAA? If so, wouldn’t you expect him to finally learn how to hit AAA pitching? Maybe he comes up and lives up to expectations, but everything about him screams AAAA masher so I don’t think anyone should get too excited.

by uthornfan on Aug 25, 2008 11:31 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I am not excited ...

… just curious to see if there really is a difference this year. And what is wrong with getting excited, some peeps here just want something new to think about since the season has turned so sour. Let them be excited, nobody is asking you to be excited, Debbie Downer.

by Melmart1 on Aug 25, 2008 11:34 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Expanded roster, rookie pitchers, etc.

I don’t buy this argument much. Teams call guys up, but most of them don’t start with any regularity. It’s not like spring training. Besides some of these teams are trying to make the playoffs. In the Rangers’ case, there won’t be too many games against teams still in the hunt, but several series feature really good pitching for Cruz to be tested against. Boston and LAA have good rotations, and those guys aren’t going to be going out to the mound not caring about throwing well.

Time you enjoy wasting was not wasted.

by t ball on Aug 25, 2008 7:11 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Agreed

Just need to make sure the Rangers not only look at the total numbers but also break those numbers down by quality of opposing pitchers. Which I’m sure they’ll do.

Nothing pithy here. Please move long.

by WyoRanger on Aug 25, 2008 9:29 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Are you trying to make a point....

because I don’t see it. Your opinion is that Cruz is a AAAA player I’m assuming. Regardless of what you think, we had might as well see what he can do while we have a month left and that way we don’t regret letting him go. What’s wrong with giving him some at bats in the month of September? And by the way Botts was way less valuable at the MLB level due to the fact that he could not play defense. At least Cruz has plus defense which means if he could hit adequately for his position then he would have value. Its unfair to compare Botts to Cruz

by erikj07 on Aug 25, 2008 1:21 AM CDT   0 recs

Rangerchick

all im saying is that theres no point not to take one last look at Cruz because to fact of the matter is that he has mauled AAA pitching and he deserves the chance. We have nothing to lose and might as well see if he has indeed turned a corner.

Anyone know how my boy Botts is doing in the land of the rising sun?

Is there any reason that Byrd and Hamilton shouldn't get very regular rest for the remainder of the year?

and probably Bradley, too, for that matter.

I’d like to see Boggs and Cruz play everyday and let Hamilton, Bradley and Byrd split time at DH and CF. But I doubt that we see that.

by robert_d_wilfong on Aug 25, 2008 8:05 AM CDT   0 recs

I don't know about that..

I think if Bradley can’t make it through a full game, then they need to go ahead and put him on the disabled list, and possibly shut him down for the year.

Hamilton needs to play everyday, what does he need rest for now?? He is about to get plenty of time to rest. Fans pay to see Hamilton play.

by tyd3311 on Aug 25, 2008 8:18 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

what?

You do not sit down an MVP caliber player, your DH who is a key cog in the lineup or a guy who has been your hottest hitter the last two months to play Nelson Cruz or Brandon Boggs. Boggs and Cruz will have to split time and occasionally they will both play. You may see Hamilton or Byrd get pulled late in games more often but he will still start 95% of the games.

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

by bigsteve on Aug 25, 2008 8:30 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Sit

Why not? They have a much better idea of what Hamilton is than Cruz? And Robert did not say sit Hamilton 3 days a week, he said Hamilton, Bradley, and Byrd split time at DH and CF. I think you could find a way to play Cruz 5 days a week and still have time for everyone else. Bradley should probably just go on the damn DL. The guy has been on the cusp of DL time since like June.

Time you enjoy wasting was not wasted.

by t ball on Aug 25, 2008 9:27 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Milt sitting

I agree, the guy can’t run out a groundball and the W-L record is almost meaningless at this point. Put Bradley on the DL and give Cruz everyday at bats – the decision on what to do with him is pretty important.

Warner Madrigal makes Ezequiel Astacio look downright handsome.

by tricer on Aug 25, 2008 9:34 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

He said regular rest

To me that means sitting often. I agree that Milton should probably just go on the DL especially if he can’t run and has to be pulled on a regular basis. But if he doesn’t I don’t think you configure your lineup so Nelson Cruz gets regular playing time at the expense of those three.

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

by bigsteve on Aug 25, 2008 10:34 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Regular rest

Probably not the best term — didn’t mean to imply that he would only play 2-3 days per week. But I wouldn’t necessarily have a problem if Hamilton sat once and DHed at least once per week the rest of the way.

Bradley and Byrd, I do think could sit 3-4 times per week in order to get Cruz and Boggs some more time.

by robert_d_wilfong on Aug 25, 2008 11:41 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Also

I don’t see a real good reason to DL Bradley with rosters expanding. The team will still by trying to win and if all he is the rest of the year is a late-inning PHer why not let him stick around?

by robert_d_wilfong on Aug 25, 2008 11:44 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Bradley

I think it is just hard to tell a guy he can’t play when hes the DH and has had an amazing season so far. I understand the concept that since he is injured he could be used as a specialty late inning bat but I just think it would be hard and could become problematic in the clubhouse if hes healthy and is getting sat in favor of Nelson Cruz. If hes on the DL theres no way he could play.

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

by bigsteve on Aug 25, 2008 11:54 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

You might be right

but if they put him on the DL when he’s “healthy,” is there really any difference?

by robert_d_wilfong on Aug 25, 2008 5:56 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

If he can't run the bases at anywhere close to full speed

And becomes a liability to your team due to that he is not healthy.

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

This team in recent weeks has gone from being a

Feared offense to one that no one fears, in fact most teams can’t wait to face the current toothless rangers, Cruz and his right handed bat may help spark things IF he can be a ML player and not just a AAA superstar.

Cruz a Ranger in 2009?

Is there ANY way Cruz is a Ranger next year? Any chance at all? he’s got a rocket arm and that potential for light tower power, but even if he does come up and mash the last part of the season, Byrd, Boggs and Murphy have to have him beat. They’ve all done well this year and the fact that they are better fieldershas to put them over Cruz and his potential, right?

It will be very interesting to see what JD does with him if he comes up and shows great improvement. One thing that Cruz will allow if he shows JD something this September is that if someone calls for Murphy, or Byrd or even Boggs, JD can pull the trigger a bit faster knowing Cruz is available.

All this is allowing that Cruz does actually do something with his last opportunity as a Ranger which I still have my doubts. He’s already disappointed me too many times thus far…

What's the rumpus?

by Hypo-Luxa on Aug 25, 2008 9:33 AM CDT   0 recs

Cruz in 09

I think it depends mostly on what the club decides to do with Byrd. We still have control over him for one more year so if we want we can offer arbitration and he is ours next year. He is a good clubhouse guy and the way he has played the last couple years makes you think that if nothing else he is a great 4th OF and we could trade him this winter or midseason next year. If we keep Byrd I don’t see any room for Cruz. The only other possibility is if you send Boggs down to begin next year and give Cruz an extended look. If he proves to be a AAAA player you simply cut ties and bring Boggs or JMJ up. However I think Boggs has proven this year he is a solid OF option.

Best case is Cruz comes up now and does really well. We keep him on the 40 over the winter and a team next spring or this winter realizes they need a bat and we get a mid level prospect for him.

Ludwick

Ryan Ludwick had injury problems, started hitting at 28.

Nelson Cruz, now 29, hasn’t had those injury problems.

Who has the better age-28 prognosis?

People can talk about breaking pitches all they want. He urinated on Pacific Coast League pitching. The issue with Cruz is age.
