Sabathia likes the Giants? -Heyman article
Jon Heyman thinks Sabathia wants to go to SF. He even says that comes from someone who knows Sabathia well. I know that it is early to talk about this, but with Zito's contract is there much chance the Giants pony up for Sabathia this off-season?
Heyman article: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/jon_heyman/08/25/heyman.scoop/index.html
AND if he does go to the giants, doesn't that create a logjam on their rotation? I am unfamiliar with their pirching besides Lincecum, but they do have needs in their lineup. Like at shortstop and the outfield. Tampa Bay isn't going to give us any of their young pitching, because they have no needs in the farm system, generally speaking. Would the Giants part with Cain or Sanchez if Andrus/ a ML( or ML ready) OF, and a promising pitching prospect were offered?
I may be way overvaluing Sanchez and Cain. i throw that possibility out off the cuff, but I wanted to get the board's opinion on the Giants, in light of Sabathias desire to play closer to where he grew up, being a trade partner for us?

Why would htat logjam their rotation??
A 5 man rotation of Sabathia, Lincecum, Cain, Zito, and Sanchez would be the best in the league…

I'd be pretty surprised if he didn't sign with LA.

Jesus
Could you imagine if he signed with the Angels? I doubt he will but hypothetically, if they signed him and picked up Lackey’s option.
I’d shit a brick.

They have some payroll coming off the books
with K-Rod, Tex, Garret Anderson and Garland.
I expect them to sign someone pretty big. Maybe two.
If they let those four walk and sign, say, CC and a big bat (Burrell? Dunn? Abreu?) they’d be a better team for probably a little less money. Imagine how much payroll flexibility they’d have this off season if they didn’t have that horrible GMJ contract weighing down on their heads.

Thinking out loud
Tex ~$4m
GA $12m
JG $12m
KRod $10m
Total ~$38m
$120m 2008 payroll
If they pick up Vlad’s $15m option and Lackey’s $9m option and figure a 5% increase for arb eligibles, then they are up to ~$89m.
Sabathia ~$20
Burrell, Dunn, Abreu ~ $12-15
2009 payroll = ~$121m-$124m
Sabathia
Lackey
Saunders
Santana
Weaver
CL — Arredondo/Escobar(?)
Figgins — 3B
Willits — LF
Guerrero — DH
Burrell — 1B
Hunter — CF
Kendrick — 2B
Matthews — RF
Mathis — C
Aybar — SS

I think the Rangers would spend money
at midseason if they were competitive. They just haven’t been very competitive. So far the arms from the minors just aren’t panning out.
After blowing decent stacks of cash on Padilla and Millwood, I’m not sure I believe thats the answer either. They need at least two young starters to step up sometime. and look league average or better. I suspect our problem is more coaching and development than drafting.

Agree
If they’re going to contend in 2009 they probably need to sign someone like Sheets, trade for another solid starter AND have a couple of young guys step up, like maybe Hurley and McCarthy. The bullpen will likely be fine if they don’t have to come in during the 4th inning so often.

My post
was not an indictment of the Ranges spending habits as much as a kudos to the Angels for the way they have built their team.
If you go look at Cots and scan the Angels’ contracts, it’s pretty amazing how well the timing of the contracts were configured. The scenario above is very possible and if it comes to fruition, the Angels are poised to continue their run of success for several more years.
Of course, its possible that the GMJ and Torri signings may be their Waterloo in a couple of years.

the Matthews Jr. contract is already a washout.

But they're still the best team in baseball
with that albatross of a contract.

What?
Are you saying $12-15 total for Burrell, Dunn & Abreu? Don’t need Abreu.
It will take that much for EACH of them.
I would let Guerrero walk and sign Burrell and Dunn and put Dunn at first and Burrell in LF. Add those two with Sabathia and we will only worry about the wildcard for awhile.
Go Cubbies and Go Rangers!

Um, obviously he meant that it would cost that much for one of them.

I hope he signs with the Angels
Seeing the Angels as the recipient of the next Barry Zito contract disaster would please me to no end.

FWIW, CC is currently building a house in Orange County
Last week I took a pleasure trip. I drove my wife to the airport.

I was reading what SF Giants fans had to say
about CC singing with their team. They had an interesting scenario and I was wondering if you would do it.
They said they would like to trade Alderson, Sanchez, and Zito to a team that will take Zito’s entire contract. So basically including prospects to take Zito.
Would you take on Zito’s contract to have Alderson and Sanchez?
by Coolbean04 on Aug 26, 2008 1:40 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Just for the record
I wouldn’t do the trade. I think Sanchez is a back of the rotation kind of pitcher and the salary we take isn’t worth the ? if Alderson will be solid or not.

have you seen what Madison Bumgartner is doing lately?...
…good God, man.

Alderson
He’s one of the best pitching prospects in baseball right now. If he were in the Rangers’ system he’d rank right up there behind Feliz and Holland for me. One year out of high school and doing very well in high-A ball.
Time you enjoy wasting was not wasted.

Yea
but is it worth taking 100M dollar contract for that?
