Minors 8/26

I didn't see this anywhere else, so I thought I'd start a diary.

OKC and Doug Mathis got pounded. Mathis allowed 6R in 2 IP, but 0ER.

Frisco loses a close one to the Hooks.

Smoak with his first professional Home Run in a 1-4 evening, driving in 2.

Hamburger with the save for Clinton. Very shaky allowing a H and 2 BBs, but gets out of it unscathed.

Rookie Rangers up big in the 6th with a very strong outing from Wieland. 5IP, 2 H, 0ER, 1 BB, and 8K... very nice...

ramdom farm observations:

Clinton

-fabio pitched tonight in relief for clinton. 2 ip 1h 2bb
-beltre 1-4 w/ an rbi
-moreland 2-4 2 doubles
-Miguel Alfonzo is doing good again and in his last 10 games is hitting .361 in that time. he sucked at the beginning of the season and seem to remember him hurt for a bit.

whopper jr. is here as mentioned above.

spokane:

kinda quiet except for nealram.
2 players with mulihit games, both are older prospects.

frisco:

the king 2-4 (hitting .298 almost to .300 BA for the season, for a 19 year old in AA thats damn impressive)
moonshine 1-4 w/ bb
tracy 2-3

Schlact limped through 5 with 8 hits and 3 bb’s and 3 er’s

OKC:

mathis sucked; jr mayberry 1-4; TT 1-4 2k’s

AZL:

De Los Santos 2-5 with 2r’s and 1 k not doing that bad for a kid born in ’89 in his 1st year in the states.

4 walks

in the last 7 games, and over the last ten he is batting .356 with an OBP over .400, with two HRs for good measure. If his defense is as good as advertised, he could arrive quickly.

Borbon

Frisco has clinched a playoff spot right? When do those start? I want him to play in those but if there is some time between Sept. 1st and the start of the playoffs I would really like to see him in Arlington.

Chad Tracy

What’s gotten into him? He was supposed to be the best college bat in the draft when he was drafted (according to at least one source), so he could be for real, but I had given up on him after his lackluster start at Bakersfield.

I propose a 5-year moratorium on trading any young Ranger pitchers who throw over 90 mph.

It doesn't make much sense

given the perception of the Cali league, but it seems like there have been a good number of batters in the Rangers org who come to Frisco and perform at or above the level they did in Bakersfield.

by clark on Aug 27, 2008 10:28 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Reputation

maybe the league’s reputation gets into hitters’ heads and they try and swing for the fences at every at-bat knowing it’s got a good chance of leaving the yard? It is pretty hard to keep disciplined when you know a pop-up has a chance to fly out of the park…

What's the rumpus?

by the way

i watched Miller’s Crossing last night. I added it to my queue after someone commented on your sig. It was a very good movie, although less funny than i thought it would be going in. but really, i have never seen a bad coen brothers movie.

and re your comment, wasn’t it Whittleman who said he thought he had a swing or an approach that would lend itself better to the upper levels? I wonder what he meant by that…

by clark on Aug 27, 2008 10:53 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Miller's Crossing

As with all great movies, it gets better with every subsequent viewing. It’s not a Big lebowski, or even a Raising Arizona kind of movie, but it definitely has it’s greatness. The dialogue alone is worth the price of admission. While it’s not my favorite Coen movie, it is definitely top 3. Which, listing favorite Coen movies is like trying to list top Ranger prospects. Most writer/director’s best wouldn’t even be in the Coen’s Top 5.

As for the comment, I saw that Wittleman quote which confused me. Maybe he’s trying to legitimize his call-up when his numbers really weren’t that impressive. And then some scout said JMJ is the type of guy who gets better at each level. I wonder if this is an analogous way to say “I sucked in High A, but I still deserve a promotion”?

What's the rumpus?

Miller's Crossing

I rented the VHS long ago. Sat down. Watched it. Rewound the tape. Watched it again.

Intolerable Cruetly sucked.

I’ll tell you a good Coen-esque movie … The Road to Perdition.

Sam Mendes

I’ve had my calendar marked for this since last summer…

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0959337/

My head’s less in line with Richard Yates nowadays but that’s a book with a beating heart. If that makes sense.

Road to Perdition

Own that on DVD — definitely recommend for repeat viewing.

Interesting trend

JMJ, Boggs, Borbon, Whittleman, Tracy, Davis (just off the top of my head)…they all seemingly improved upon arriving in Frisco. I know that prospects are supposed to improve at each level, but there is usually an acclimation process, and I have heard it said that the jump from A ball to AA ball is often the hardest to make. Yet something seems to click for our players in Frisco.

I didn't see this mentioned...

but when does the hype start to louden surrounding Joe Wieland, and does he get to try his hand against short season A ball batters this year? Check the stats. For those scoring at home, that is a WHIP under 1.

Also, Hamburger’s debut was effective without necessarily being efficient. Two walks and a hit, but a double play and a ground out nullified them all for his first Clinton save and his 14th in 15 tries on the year.

Jeez....

That guy was born 7 months after I graduated high school. I need a nap.

Weiland

I think the fact he is not in Spokane has more to do with who IS in Spokane. There simply is no room in their rotation unless you want to start moving people but since most the starters are 18 year olds and there isn’t room in Clinton theres really nowhere for them to go. I wouldn’t be suprised if he pulls a Kiker or Beavan next year and stays back in extended to start the year but goes straight to Clinton in May or June

I've been trying to get the hype going

may take some media buzz though.

Offense doesn't doubt me, but my first and primemost thing is defense and punt return and kickoff return
