Wednesday a.m. stuff
Two straight complete games for Kevin Millwood. Not bad.
Jeff Wilson says the message has been throw strikes, from both Mark Connor and Andy Hawkins, and it is apparently now sinking in, at least for Millwood. Millwood says it is all about confidence.
Vicente Padilla couldn't throw his bullpen yesterday, and if he can't do it today, either, then either Dustin Nippert or Luis Mendoza will make his start on Friday. I know you all are all fired up about the idea of that.

Millwood = Unclutch
Where was he when it mattered? How hard is it to post a good game when you are 16 games out in late August against the Royals?

Millwood
Can’t you ask the same thing about the beginning of the season when he had a 2.53 ERA in his first 5 games but the team was sucking ass?

Sure I could
But what fun would that be?

"the message has been throw strikes"
Wow.
I’m glad that someone has finally tried to get that through the pitchers’ heads. Since throwing strikes apparently doesn’t matter until you get to Arlington.
This seems like a message that shouldn’t need to be told…

I'm so Excited..........
………Millwood 2 complete games in a row. Woohoo!!!!
Now he’s 34-33 as our ace with an ERA still closer to 5 than it is to 4. What a waste of money.
This is my theory on his last 2 starts:
Since he totally passed through waivers because no team in the major leagues wanted him, Junior Daniels told him that if he could actually perform in accordance with his salary, that he’d try and trade him to a contender, thus releasing him from this sink hole in Arlington.
You know, kinda like he did with Everyday Eddie. That was certainly a great trade. An undrafted, rookie league pitcher. Not quite what we’ve become accustomed to when we deal closers, ala, Uggie, CoCo, Gagne.
First order of business for Nolan this off-season?

Wow
What an epic post.
You considered Eddie our closer on par with Uggie, Gagne, and Coco. Thats awesome. How many save opportunities did Eddie have?
As to Millwood if he wasn’t considered our “ace” and was just our #3 starter how would he be viewed? I say he’d be a perfect #3. Which is why I am advocating going after garland this winter. I think he could put up similar numbers to Millwood only with more innings pitched and less injury time. He would come in as a #3 or 4 starter depending on who else we do or don’t sign this winter.

First Sharky
Now LBrooks. Both seem to have fallen off their game a bit. Bland, not that polarizing. Seems like both are off their game a bit.

I guess the part about getting the "key back to the basement"
threw me off…I didn’t know the basement was locked. That’s such a ridiculous metaphor, especially considering that we’re all posting on a sports blog. “Hello pot, this is kettle…..”

One thing I'm wondering...
Did Connor ever make adjustments to Millwood’s throwing motion, thus causing the multiple groin strains? It’s interesting… his first start off the DL after Connor is fired and he does good for four innings then gets lit up… then his next two starts are complete games. The second was against the Royals, yes, but the first was against the Tigers, a team that actually has a decent offense.

If we are going to toss Nippert or Mendoza
out there, couldn’t we just forfeit the game and save the bullpen and our mental anguish?

Better scenario
When talking about adding pitching for next season, maybe we can expand it to read:
Trade for a young pitcher, sign Jon Garland and Derek Lowe and go with Harrison and Feldman in the 4 and 5 slots. Keep Padilla only if Garland or Lowe don’t sign. (Millwood will be traded this week I feel)
Keep Wright, Rupe, Nippert, Benoit, Loe, Francisco and Wilson in the bullpen.
Hunter, Hurley, Mendoza, Gabbard and D. Mathis can be our rotation in OKC for 2009 and just be used for spot starts up here when needed. Madrigal should close in OKC in 2009.
Keep Feliz and Holland in Frisco to start but consider them for mid-season callup to OKC if need be.
Go Cubbies and Go Rangers!
