Sickels - Where Did This Guy (Holland) Come From?
Pretty good article on everyone's favorite prospect (at least...these days).

Holland is a Grade B+ prospect at a minimum right now and perhaps an A-. If he stays healthy, he could be an excellent pitcher.
wow VERY high praise

A grades
So with Holland perhaps being an A- and feliz definitely being an A- and Smoak I would assume being an A- would we be the only team with 3 A prospects?
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

I would think so
The A’s could challenge, and the Giants could as well with their two stud arms and that 1B.

If Smoak gets an A-
then Buster Posey definitely will.
Personally, I don’t see Smoak as an A- player (on Sickles scale). He’s a great prospect, but lets not forget that he was probably the 3rd or 4th best college hitter in the draft last year. Sickles hands out only a few dozen A’s or A-‘s – I don’t think he’d automatically give one to Smoak at this point.

agreed
Smoak gets a B+, I’d imagine.

He may not be
But Posey will probably rank as the highest rated 2008 draft prospect. He was the best college hitter last season, and plays a premium position. Whatever he is, I think Smoak is one grade lower.

they do have a ton of SP at the middle to upper levels
the difference is that a lot of our arms are in the low to middle levels lol
but who are their position prospects/guys?
gonzalez?
donaldson?
cardenas?
c carter? (up and down season)
i tinnk we have the edge in position players…
teagarden
maxram
smoak
davis? (probably not included on minor league rankings)
JMJ (interesting to see where he is rated this offseason)
DREW MEYER!!!

Our edge in position players
is far, far greater than their edge in pitching…

Possible A- prospects from Sickels
I would agree that Feliz is likely an A- and that Holland has a shot at the same grade. Two other Ranger minor leaguers who are candidates for an A- are Andrus and MaxRam.
Sickels rated Andrus a B+ in his 2008 book based largely on projection and a good 2 month run with the bat in the Cal League and AFL. All things considered, Andrus has had an outstanding year in AA with a combination of excellent on-base skills (nearly 360 OBP), base-running (50+ steals), and defense. Sickels would be justified in bumping Andrus up a grade to A-.
MaxRam received a B in the 2008 book based on his excellent bat (300/400/500) and questionable glove. MaxRam’s offensive numbers in 2008 have been staggering (370/450/600+) and he is beginning to quell concerns about his ability to provide serviceable defense behind the dish. Max’s offensive output should bump him to at least a B+. If Sickels believes that his catching has a chance to be slightly below average in the majors, then an A- should result.

that was my thought
if i went friday i’d leave as soon as feliz was done, which could be no more than a few innings

people generally only post
to voice differing opinions. I think the Rangers masses largely agree (or want to agree) with Sickels’ largely positive and optimistic eval.

besides
all this will inevitably happen is a post war between Rangers and A’s farm junkies about who has the stronger farm, and frankly, we as Rangers fans usually lose that battle.

Q: Tristan from California asks:
The A’s Farm System will rank in the top 10 by the end of this season, True or False?
A: Ben Badler: You could make a really strong case for chopping the zero off that number.

The A's
are easily in the top handful of systems.

Are the Rangers in that group of 5
Will the rise of Holland and Feliz offset the slight decrease in value of Andrus (doubt he makes it as the BA’s 19th best prospect next year) and the graduation of Davis to the major leagues?
by chrisR on Aug 27, 2008 10:16 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Rangers...
easily in the top 5 imo. The system is just loaded. I don’t think Andrus will drop as far as you think and there is plenty of other talent to keep them in the top 5.
