Eyre
He hasn’t pitched all year, recovering from T-J surgery. They want him to get some innings and see if he can contribute to the pen next year.
AFL pitchers are almost always either relievers or guys who were hurt and didn’t log many innings.
Smoak is going to instructionals. I guess you could have had him replace Tracy, but I imagine they’d as soon see him in Surprise.

AFL rules
Do instructs coincide with the AFL? Are teams allowed to add in a non-roster player once per week in the AFL games?

I believe there is overlap
I think there is generally a provision for a “taxi-squad” player to be added, or for someone to replace someone else on the roster if there’s an injury.
However, there’s also generally more guys out there than there is regular playing time, particularly among the positional players.

AFL is meant for AA players and up
Teams can only send one player who was below AA as of August 6th. In Texas’s case, that’s Whittleman. Smoak’s Hawaii-bound, if anywhere.

If he starts next year in AA
won’t it be the same?

I think he starts...
next year in Bakersfield. Wouldn’t have a problem with him going right to Frisco though.

pitching is underwhelming
with the inclusion of Bannister and Eyre, but i like the hitters. I am hoping to see smoak in Hawaii.

most of our young awesome pitchers are at their limit on IP
no sense in pushing them to the breaking point, or risking it.

What about Diamond...
Diamond has not had very many innings and I would love to get him a few more this fall.
by DirtyDawg on Aug 27, 2008 12:40 PM CDT 0 recs
That's the guy
I was surprised wasn’t included, though the AFL isn’t the only option for him to get some innings this winter.

Diamond
His omission makes me think he still needs rest, in spite of the low-inning 2009 workload. But yeah, you have to think he’s expected to be 100% by ST.
Maybe just Surprise for him.

Didn't he just have surgery?
He was probably left off because of that

They don't start playing
until October, I thought Diamond might be back in shape sometime that month. Then again, since they waited a bit to do the surgery maybe he won’t be ready yet.

here's a
link to the AFL website in case you’re like me and don’t know much about the AFL.
Can anyone explain the drafting process?

from the Arizona Fall League
wikipedia entry:
“Each August, Major League Baseball clubs hold a position draft to determine the players who will go to Arizona.” I’m guessing that it’s a way to decide which positions each club gets to send but don’t know how it works.

Does anyone have any info on the projection of Beau Jones, He has been very successful this season in the bullpen.
by CRUSHDAVIS on Aug 27, 2008 1:52 PM CDT 0 recs
I know he is a former first round pick
who has a very live left arm. and i know his results since being moved to the bullpen have been very encouraging. Control has been a problem in the past, but both lefties and righties have struggled to hit him. I would be curious to know more about his arsenal of pitches, though.

From Before the Season...
I saw this piece that was written during the final days of 2007, but it interested me. Beau Jones is ranked at number 18:

John Bannister???
Per Scott Lucas’s website, John Bannister is Rule 5 eligible this off-season and can elect to take free agency if he’s not added to the 40-Man Roster (assuming I’m reading it right. The list is at http://www.rangers.scottlucas.com/archives/2008/08/texas_rangers_e.html )

Then let him walk
He is not very good now and doesn’t project to be very good in the future. His story of being undrafted out of HS and signing a FA deal is nice, but I can’t see him being a good enough MLB pitcher to protect him at the expense of someone else.
