14th Best Ranger Ever Community Project
Congratulations to Fergie Jenkins on being named the 14th greatest Texas Rangers player ever. He won the most dominant ballot since Pudge won in the first round, getting 41% of the LSB vote.
Our list so far:
- Ivan Rodriguez 1991-2002
- Juan Gonzalez 1989-99, 2002-03
- Nolan Ryan 1989-93
- Rafael Palmeiro 1989-93, 1999-03
- Alex Rodriguez 2001-03
- Rusty Greer 1994-2002
- Michael Young 2000-08
- Charlie Hough 1980-90
- Kenny Rogers 1989-95, 2000-02, 2004-05
- Jim Sundberg 1974-83, 1988-89
- Buddy Bell 1979-85, 1989
- Ruben Sierra 1986-92, 2000-01, 2003
- Fergie Jenkins 1974-75, 1978-81
Now it's time to decide who the 14th greatest Ranger player ever is. I would suggest judge it the same way you would evaluate MLB players over a career, but consider their careers were only as long as the years and games they played with the Texas Rangers. Consider not just best seasons, but total contribution, and perhaps a bit of profile.
If there's anyone not on the ballot who you think should be considered as the 15th best Ranger, please let me know in the comments.
Write-In Votes
If there's someone not on the list who you want to vote for, please vote "OTHER," then write your vote down in a reply. If you label that reply as "Write In" it will be much easier for me to find. Thanks!

Now Voting For: Toby Harrah
And considering he only got one vote last round, I might be voting for him for a while.

Me too...
…I’m thinking my next 4-5 votes will be for Toby, or as my dad always called him “Backwards-Forwards”.

Out of curiosity...
Why Toby Harrah above Mike Hargrove? Number of years of service?

Harrah vs. Hargrove
Hargrove has an 18 point lead in OPS+ as a Ranger, but Harrah has two things on him on top of that: positional value and tenure. He played nearly twice as many games as Hargrove in Texas (okay, some of it in Washington, but I’m being lazy), and that alone I think would be enough to negate the 18 point difference even if they played the same defense at the same position.
In Runs Created, Harrah ranks 8th with 681 while Hargrove ranks 17th with 433. And that, again, doesn’t take in the value of that production from shortstop vs. the value in that production from a first baseman.
Both were below average fielders, with Harrah probably being a little worse, but I don’t think it’s enough to out-do the advantage in games played and positional difference for Toby.
Additionally, when doing a project going back through time and voting for MVPs every season for Baseball Fever, I also had Harrah quite frequently on or near my ballot, so he was, for a while, pretty consistently one of the 10 best position players in the AL or so, and I can think of at least one year where he was near the top of the ballot.

Wow.
That’s pretty convincing evidence right there. I already voted for Harrah (after just doing a rudimentary check on BR and noticing that Harrah was an SS/3B during his time with Texas). Even these days, average production from a 2B/SS is good…he must’ve been worth his weight in gold during the 70s.

Teixeira leading Toby by 1 vote.
I went with Tex. He may have been a douchebag, but he was our douchebag.

Tex is overrated

I don't think so...
In his five years here, he averaged 122 games per year. That’s missing a quarter of every season he wore a Texas uniform. It wasn’t like he was in a more injury-prone position either — he played 1B and DH while he was here.
To me, putting up an OPS+ of ~120 in the 1B/DH slot isn’t enough production to justify a higher rank.

yup
I got tired of his fake intensity pretty quick, and he never seemed like a ranger to me. I think Brown, Harrah and (dear god) even Tex should be ahead of him
