Around SBN: Reflections on the Best Blazers Month In Forever Bar-right-arrows

Bakersfield is definitely going away

Not too many details in the BA blurb or the accompanying article.  But it looks as if the Rangers will no longer be playing in Bakersfield past next year.  I know this was mentioned a few months ago, but it is looking more and more official

http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/business/?p=117

They don't mention the Rangers plans in either story - most likely they'll take one of the High-A spots being added in the Carolina League (though I guess taking another club's spot in the Cal League is always an option as well).  Richmond - obviously the best free market right now - looks like it'll be a AA club, leaving Fayetteville the only known possibility.

Anyone with more info on the minor leagues have more news about this?

Well crap

I liked the idea of being able to see “where the future plays today” for the Rangers a couple times a year, and Bakersfield is close enough to me to go.

I've long been annoyed

that the Cal League doesn’t have any teams near San Diego. The closest one is Lake Elsinore, which is about 2 hours away and has been in a different division than Bakersfield, so they only play down there one series a year.

Nevertheless, had Feliz still been on the team when that series occurred, I would have had to think about it…

I got to see Holland in person so that was pretty cool

It’s two hours for me to get to Bakersfield, which is the closest Cal League team, or about the same amount of time to get to Visalia… but everything is far away here.

Sorry Inkara1

Having been to Sam Lynn when I worked in Bakersfield in 2000 & 2001, I feel bad for the baseball fan. That is such a horrendous ballpark, I only went to one game. Customer service was terrible back then too.

It is too bad that someone couldn’t have figured out a way to develop a new stadium/retail development there. Bakersfield is a great town that would support baseball more if it had a nice comfortable place to watch a game.

Go Cubbies and Go Rangers!

They don't open the gates or start selling day-of-game tickets until 6:30 for a 7:30 scheduled first pitch

So I was rewarded for allowing extra time and getting there early by having to sit on the side of a planter by the gate for almost half an hour. Then, the ticket booth opened 10 or so minutes early, but they still wouldn’t let me in through the gate, which is just as well because it turns out the guy sold me a ticket for the prior day’s game. So I went back to the ticket booth, which was open but no one was there because the ticket guy had gone looking for me.

The main complaint I have with the park though requires replacement of the whole park. That’s the fact that the sun sets over center field because the park was built backwards. I guess the park wasn’t built with night games in mind in the ‘20s or whenever it was first built, but still. Instead of a 7:05 start time, start times are scheduled for 7:30. The game I went, they didn’t have the first pitch until 7:55 or so. That means even though my game breezed along and was finished in well under three hours, it was still after 10:30 by the time I left (and I had a two-hour drive after that). I have a feeling my experience with that wasn’t atypical. Consider who lives in Bakersfield — agricultural workers, oil workers, and the like, a lot of people who have to be up early for work and aren’t likely to want to stay out until 11 or later to take their kids to a baseball game (especially for a losing team) when they have to be up at 5 a.m. If they were to build a park with the batter’s eye facing east and with a shade structure and ceiling fans over the stands, then start the games at 7, or maybe even at 6, more people might find it worthwhile to go to the game and still be able to get home in time for bed at a reasonable hour.

Richmond

I would love to see the team come here to Richmond. The field here is old as well though. Thats why the Braves left. The mayor was an ass about building a new ballpark downtown. People representing minor league ball were in town a few months ago and guaranteed Richmond wouldnt be without minor league ball when the Braves finally leave in ’09. Shame they will have to use that crappy old stadium though.

I wouldn't mind it moving to Richmond,

but they would definitely need a knew stadium. I would just be glad to see a team somewhere on the east coast so I could actually see some of are young guys in person.
