So, to review what we learned last night:
- Luis Mendoza > Steal Home
- Gerald Laird > David Purcey
- CJ Wilson is finally losing his grip on the closers job?
We need to hire Chuck Norris to kick the ass of any Ranger fan caught booing one of our young pitchers at the RBiA.
Make that tonight...
I’m thinking so far ahead, it’s tomorrow already.
We need to hire Chuck Norris to kick the ass of any Ranger fan caught booing one of our young pitchers at the RBiA.
Wasn't a save situation....
So I don’t put too much focus on who pitched the ninth… I only hope it means Eddie has the closer job for now. It was good to watch a game close out without going into nailbiting territory…

woooooooooo 4 runs in 7 innings
he is our new ACE,
since luis had one average game, laird should bat 3rd, ian should bat last, and ramon is the best-lefty hitter we have
Feliz and Hurley. The 1-2 punch of the future
you obviously dont get that im being sarcastic
people should not go by one average start. thats why you dont think laird is a power hitter because he hit 2 hr today

he calmed down quite nicely, I was pleasantly surpised after that bad start.
There is no status, except for me. Because I am who I am.
MILES
He's great
When there’s nobody on base. He seems over-anxious when there are base runners and can’t hit the strike zone.
Note: These are just observations from tonights game.
That makes sense....
He tends to give up a huge inning every start.(3 runs or more) instead of getting out of jams with little damage.
Ya, sez his
brother.

Did Neil Ramirez get hurt again?
Got beat around for an inning before Nevarez took over?
NeRa tonight
The radio announcer didn’t mention anything about an injury to Ramirez. He finished the first inning and was replaced in the second.
The next 2 weeks...
Granted most feel that the Rangers are out of WC contention…
The next few weeks will make or break this team with games against NYY and Bos.
If we somehow go 5-2 or better we still have a chance….anything less than that will just be treading water like we have been.
I don’t see it happening just because of our inconsistant starting pitching….which is the same reason we cannot go on a extended win streak that would also help. We can’t go 3 games without a starter getting shelled for 6 or 7 runs.

Mendoza was solid
Laird hit 2 homeruns
Murph went 0 for

Very nice win...
...I dunno how the F they keep doing it. Every night is a high-wire act with too much pressure on the defense but we’re into the first week of August and they keep proving me wrong.
Proving me wrong collectively about this bunch is a good.

Too much pressure on the defense?
It’s too much pressure on the offense to pull the pitchers out of the ditch every night.
Great effort by Luis, Luis!!

I know..
After last night’s loss, thinking about how well the Jays had been playing of late, I convinced myself they were gonna get 2 of 3 from us… then were down 3-0 after the 1st, and I knew it… and the upcoming schedule was posted during the broadcast and i was thinking this was the beginning of the end of our run… but Mendoza settles down, a couple of big home runs, and we have another series win. Somehow, someway. As tough as the upcoming schedule seems, there is one thing I’ve learned about this Rangers team, never assume a loss.
Reading through...
a little of the gameday thread made me realize why I’m not as fond of them as I used to be. A whole lot of knee-jerking (mostly by that Steal Home clown) about Luis. The guy does have pretty good stuff. He gives up 3 runs in one inning and people want him sent down? Really? Do we not understand that this team is not chasing a pennant and has a ton of pitchers on the DL?
At this point any pitcher with average stuff who is healthy is going to get a shot to stick around. The amount of “DFA him. etc.” after every negative play from every player in every game is ridiculous. But I digress.
Anyway, nice to see the Rangers come back. OMFT stil pnws LH pitching, and if he keeps playing like this Salty if going to find himself gone in the off season. NIce to see Davis with a couple hits including the HR. Ian is really struggling right now though.

few things
1. Its not 3 runs in 1 inning, it was 31 runs in 39 innings at the time. I hardly think its knee jerking to be annoyed with the guy. As long as its recognized when someone turns it around, whats the big deal.
2. I only saw one guy say they should send him down in the current climate, and he was promptly shouted down 3x over
3. Plenty of people made those exact same points at the time. Your post sounds like you are the voice of reason 3 hours later when it was said 3 minutes later.
imo the griping about the gameday threads is as ridiculous as the griping about a bad start or a couple of errors. i can not get my head around how people can expect no negative reaction to when things are going badly. seriously, I know ive said it before, but reactions at the time is the entire basis of the thread. errors and bad pitching is not fun to watch. people make negative comments about it. someone hits a homerun or the rangers win, there comes a lot of positive comments. or like frankie’s good inning.
im sorry, but I see these complaints every other day and I dont get it.
i swear. some people just want a play by play of each thing thats happening. open up mlb gameday if thats what you want. you cant expect only positive emotion and just reserved mild “he will be better next time” judgement when bad things happen. its unreasonable.
put “dfa” into the search engine and half the mentions are jokes, very few people actually are suggesting X player be released.
ok, im done ranting. said my piece.

As Mr. Sheppard so eloquently explained, GDTs are about the moment, the emotion…the passion. If baseball doesn’t get your juices flowing, try something else. The GDTs are about as fun & psychotic as watching a playoff game live, and we like it that way.
I realize they have been overrun by a bunch of new folks lately, who may not be in tune. But AJM (I think), loves all the new traffic, and we’ll school those young pups up. No worries, mate!

he's not griping
just saying he doesn’t like them and saying why. i can’t remember if he’s made the same point previously but if it’s for the first time, I don’t see anything wrong with that.
and there is a subtle difference between “that sucks” and “that guy is terrible” but there is a difference. You might not think so but you also have a limit to what knee jerks you will tolerate. Are you going to let someone say “Hamilton sucks” after an 0-11 stretch? Even when he did that (or something similar) earlier in the year, most people said things like “I really hope Hamilton breaks out of it,” as opposed to just bashing him.
Mendoza is no Hamilton and there is nothing to suggest that he’s going to be really good, but I don’t think many are ready to close the book on him (at least thinking about it objectively). It’s just kind of annoying to have to read “X sucks” when you don’t think it’s true and the person saying it is only basing it on one play.
that being said, I don’t want to make any push to change the gameday threads. would just like to point out that just because I don’t want to DFA someone does not mean I’m not upset. I don’t boo my team either.
""If they'd have told me you can make the team but you've got to shine the shoes, I'd have been there shining shoes." -Bradley
i wonder when the last time someone
Seriously suggested to DFA someone where the following wasnt a factor:
1) Noone immediately said we don’t have anyone better to replace him or otherwise said that was silly.
2) Or if those 2 fail, the player wasnt at least somewhat deserving of being sent down. I mean really, Luis Mendoza would have been sent down weeks ago in probably every other organization in baseball. Hes just lucky he happens to be on the rangers who have noone else to throw out there.
Seriously, I put DFA into the comment search engine, and I see mostly sarcasm. Someone suggested we DFA Blalock because they dont tihnk we will pick up his option. I honestly think there are more people mocking “DFA” comments then there are actual DFA comments. Im probably guilty of the same in reverse, but everything is getting massively exaggerated.
Anyway, past that one point… yes I can see where the difference between this guy sucks and hes sucking today could get to you… but you are drawing a fine line that most people arn’t considering in their post-3run homerun to put the rangers behind comment. And in some of your comments you act like thats legitimately 90% of the thread, when there is even MORE knee jerk celebration. Does murph hitting a HR really make him a great outfielder any more than X player having an 0 for 9 run makes him terrible? Its 2 sides of the same coin and its difficult to only get one of them. I think you are taking each individual quick post too seriously. If you don’t wish to participate in the outbreaks of negativity when the rangers are blowing a game, thats obviously just fine, but you’ve called the recent threads trash because of negativity, and I dont think its fair to act like thats ACTUALLY the majority of the threads. Hell, the connor jinx thing that you were so focused in on was a running joke. Of course, people still disliked him legitimately though. And hey, now hes gone.
And if you are suggesting things were any different earlier.. id suggest you don’t remember april. At least until the point apathy set in as the rangers reached new lows… id rather people still be upset when the rangers suck than they be so used to it to the point of apathy.
Anyway, I certainly can understand that not everyone wants to take part in that kind of minute by minute reactionary threads. I get that and its just fine, but I think some of the comments ive seen recently are unfair. Especially after the game like the original post in this line of discussion. Looking at reaction to mendoza blowing up 3 hours later when the rangers have come back, he settled down and its a win? Unfair point of judgement.
And yes, Im taking all this way too seriously. I could take my own advice and just ignore these few complaints. But im not claiming im perfect =)

summary: Woo! Gameday threads!

I don't think...
I’ve made that point before, but I could be wrong.
I’m ok with DShep’s point of view. I understand that “heat of the moment” argument. I’m not trying to be the “voice of reason” or sound like I’m better than any other LSBer. I guess I would just like to hear more reasoning to a point. The first point he made with Mendoza and runs allowed is what I like to see. Not just “this guy sucks”. That is why I like these post game threads.
I don’t expect the gameday threads to change. Which is fine, no big deal. I was just saying that I used to read them almost every game and now I usually just skim through them a couple times a week. No big deal. So back off protector of the gameday threads. =P

was good, which was encouraging. My prediction: Rangers finish 2nd in WC Race behind the Red Sox, or beat the Rays in the WC race if the Sox catch them. The pitching is now due to turn a corner.

I’ve got no interest in any 2nd tier f.a. pitchers, though.
I’d rather stick with Millwood and Padilla and the in-house options, plus anyone available via trade, than go out there and try to get a 2nd tier guy.

on that list I wouldn’t mind seeing the Rangers go after besides CC and Sheets would be Garland. Other than that I don’t really see any of those guys as a upgrade over Millwood.

Meh...
I know he’s not great, but he has averaged about 200 IP and a ERA just under 4.50 over the last 7 seasons.
He’s only 28 so I could see him as a solid ML innings eater in the middle of the rotation. I would only try and go after him if the Rangers could deal Millwood, which may be tough.
"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates
If by bad you mean
$12 mil for a 4.50ERA and MAYBE a 1.5:1 GB/FB ratio and a guy who doens’t strikeout anyone.
Check it out. NIppert has a third of Garlands K total in about a quarter of the innings this year.
Turrible. Garland may not suck but he is drastically overpaid.

Most ML pitchers...
are overpaid. I would pay 10-12 mil a year for 200 IP and a 4.50 ERA on this staff. The price of pitching has gone through the roof.
I don’t think you should be comparing Garlan to Nippert. I think Dusty Tits has a chance, but come on.
If the guy is on the bump every 5 days giving you 6-7 innings at a time I would pay that. Just my opinion.
"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates
I don't blame you
But I would like a little more from my $12 mil pitcher. A 2:1 or unheard of 3:1 gb/fb ratio. Something that would indicate that the guy is not going to leave balls up in the zone to be crushed over the left field wall while making half his starts at the Ballpark.
Now, I could be wrong about him pitching here. Gotta do more research on that one…
"We go to Jim Knox..."
"Why are you yelling? You're a foot from me..."
He won't have a 4.5 ERA in TBiA
He has played with some good defense, and gives up a fair share of HR. He really is not a ground ball pitcher, and gives up too many line drives. His peripherals are poor. Not a good investment for 10-12 million.
He'll have a 5.1 ERA
He gives up HR’s, is not a GB pitcher and his line drives will turn into shots with the Jetstream. On top of that, the Rangers are not the Angels in terms of defense (aside form the 4 errors they made today). Assume that this defense gets marginally better next year. They still have a shaky defense probably in the bottom quarter of the league.
I don’t care what people say, Young doesn’t have the range at SS and Kinsler botches routine plays at 2B (although he’ll give you the spectacular plays all the time.) The only arguement you might have is the outfield and the infield corners are solid. In any case most grounders are up the middle to SS or 2B so saying Garland has had good defenses in the past will not help if he comes here…
Unless Andrus is up next year.

Important for the Bronx Bums
If the Yanks win, they’ll be putting pressure on the AL East and wild card.
If the Rangers win, they put pressure on… who? Even if they SWEEP, they’ll be 1/2 game behind the Yanks and then they’ll go into a part of the schedule where they play the Rays and Tigers at home and R.Sox and Angels on the road. The Yanks only have to face the Twins at Minnesota and R.Sox at home. Even if you do sweep this week, you might have to play .650/.700 through the rest of the month to keep pace with the wild card.

I don't even think winning will make the Rangers
Even if they overtake the Yanks, they’ll have to catch two other teams, whoever is not leading the division be it the R.Sox or Rays and the W.Sox or Twins. The problem with those four teams is that they have pitching/bullpen to spare so it’s unlikely that all of those teams will have faltered for a sustained period. One maybe but not all. Catching two more teams without putching yourself is a tall order.
