Julio Borbon and S-head Boras

Just saw this and didn't know if it had already been put up here or not...an article about Julio Borbon and possible troubles he'd be in b/c of his contract and Boras, depending on how the Pedro Alvarez situation falls out.

http://www.bucsdugout.com/2008/8/28/602820/breaking-down-the-pedro-al

http://community.post-gazette.com/blogs/pbc/archive/2008/08/27/main-story-arbiter-to-decide-alvarez-s-fate.aspx

"Kovacevic reports that another Boras client, Rangers minor leaguer Julio Borbon (mistakenly named "Pedro Borbon" in the article) received an extension in last year's draft. Would that contract have to be voided as well, and all the bonus money returned? I don't think Borbon, who hasn't been terribly exciting this year, would appreciate that very much. Basically, he's a 22-year-old outfield prospect in Class AA who has no plate discipline and no power but is really fast. Next year, he'd be 23 if he re-entered the draft. Think anyone would pony up a big league contract for him? It's possible, but if I were him I might worry about it."

this is the danger

and the most common criticism for the blogging world. anyone who is literate and has web access can write something like this, and then a site like MLBTR can pick it up, and then it has tipped.

don’t get me wrong, i love that fans have forums like this to discuss things that matter to them, but still, it is a danger.

MLB will not take Borbon

from the Rangers. IMO

OT: This might be the beginning of the end for Boras if you couple all of this with the AROD fiasco last year.

If something goes wrong and Hosmer gets caught up in this mess...

Boras could come out of this looking really, really bad…

MLB has already pulled Hosmer from games until the grievance over Alvarez’s contract is completed… If they go back and void his deal as well, since he agreed after Alvarez, things will get messy in a hurry…

Would Hosmer have grounds for a lawsuit against Boras if his contract is voided?

by N41D on Aug 30, 2008 10:48 AM CDT up reply actions

He might

Boras is supposed to do what is best for each of his individual clients. Doing this clearly screws one of his players over so another one will profit more. I would absolutely love to see this be the end of Boras. He’s done some crazy things in the past, but he has gotten to the point where he is hurting his players more than anything.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

yep

if Borbon would not have signed we would have gotten that pick back. Since we cannot get the pick anymore, Borbon should be safe. That would be very unfair to the Rangers to take him away now.

Yes

That ship has sailed.

borbon

i’m almost positive they agreed at the deadline but since it was an ML deal it took longer to get approved.

I don't see what one has to do with the other

Alvarez’s situation doesn’t have much to do with Borbon.

i was trying to figure that out too

After the deadline

If Boras got Alvarez’s contract voided because an extension was granted, the thinking is that since Borbon also got an extension that his contract would be voided also. Same with Hosmer. It is a reach, but that is the logic behind it.

by uthornfan on Aug 30, 2008 12:51 PM CDT up reply actions

I think calling it a "reach" is an understatement

I also think the implication — that Borbon wouldn’t get as good a deal if he were a free agent as he did last summer — is flat out wrong.

by Adam J. Morris on Aug 30, 2008 1:11 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree

I was just trying to explain the guys logic.

by uthornfan on Aug 30, 2008 1:17 PM CDT up reply actions

I think the guy was suggesting that if Borbon got taken away from us

he’d go back into the draft and not be declared a FA. He’s saying Borbon wouldn’t get as good of a deal if were drafted next year.

I don't see how a guy...

…who has spent a full season playing in the minors could then have his contract rescinded and be put back in the draft.

by Adam J. Morris on Aug 30, 2008 2:27 PM CDT up reply actions

Oh, neither do I

It’s a ridiculously stupid assertion.

I’m just saying that that’s what the dude said… he said Bourbon would get less money if this went down and Bourbon went back into the draft next year than he got from the Rangers in ’07.

Does anyone agree with the writer that he hurt his prospect status this year?

arent the contracts signed in totally different years?

Yeah

That was more or less my point.

I understand what the guy is saying, but arguing that a challenge being made now regarding a 2008 draftee should impact a 2007 draftee seems specious.
