Saturday morning things
Another bleah game. Dustin Nippert looked pretty good for the first few innings, though.
Jeff Wilson says Torii Hunter saved the game by turning a Marlon Byrd two run homer into an out. I'm not convinced it wouldn't have been a double, rather than a homer, but either way, that play was huge. Evan Grant notes the team ERA in August has dropped from 6.25 to 5.64 over the past week, which is progress.
Vicente Padilla is heading to the disabled list. The decision was made yesterday to d.l. Padilla and recall Kam Loe, but for whatever reason, it isn't happening until today.

watching Nippert pitch
He has some nice tools to work with. He looks like a guy that could possibly make some incremental improvements and have his results take a great leap forward.
Warner Madrigal makes Ezequiel Astacio look downright handsome.

Choose another word...
“bleah” is getting stale. Thanks.
Aikman and Bradshaw?
Please. They are in the same league as Trent Dilfer and Jim McMahon as QBs who were taken to the SB by great Defenses and great Running Games.

Loe
I believe the reason it is being held off until today is his service time. He had 2.117 coming into the year. Since he has spent a majority of the time in OKC this year we may be able to keep him under 3 years by doing this. Not only would it keep him from arbitration but we would get another year before he becomes a FA.

If he is being recalled to replace a person going on the DL there is no rule. But yes under normal circumstances you can’t be recalled for 10 days after being optioned down.

i disagree
he’ll be a super 2 either way. and i don’t think loe’s f.a. eligibility is a concern.

How will he be a super two?
He wasn’t one this past winter.
His FA may not be a concern but if you can guarantee another full year of control over a guy rather than lose him over a one or two day error you do it. This year instead of being up for arbitration and probably getting around a million dollars we can just resign him for 420,000.

If delaying his call up for a day or two...
…is the difference between him having 2+ years of service time and 3 years of service time, he’ll have enough service time to qualify as a super 2.
And I think Loe is a lot more likely to be dropped from the 40 man roster over the next calendar year than he is to stick around long enough for the issue of whether he’s a free agent after 2011 or 2012 to matter. With someone else, I might believe that was a factor, but in this case, I don’t see it.
by Adam J. Morris on Aug 30, 2008 12:56 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree with you there
He is definitely at the bottom of the 40 and one of the first to get cut off I believe if we need a spot. But he has shown flashes and if you can guarantee yourself an extra year of his potential services by keeping him in the minors an extra day or so you have to. Its the same reason teams hold back their top prospects for a couple weeks in April so they get essentially 7 years of service. Loe isn’t a top prospect but if you can get an extra year potentially you got to.

Nippert pitched the way he is capable of
I hope he gets to stay in the rotation for the rest 2008 and then compete for a spot in 2009.
Washington said that Millwood and Padilla are gonna be in the rotation next year. In the article they basically forshadowed that the Rangers are going to be getting pitching outside of the organization Washington said “theres gonna be some competition” . we have no major prospects who are gonna be ready next year so if we want to have a better rotation we’re gonna have to go outside for pitching

Feldman and Nippert
If we do in fact keep both Millwood and Padilla and do in fact go out and sign just one FA pitcher there will be a roster crunch problem that could cost us a good arm. That is three rotation spots taken up. Both Feldman and Nippert are out of options next year so they would have to stay on the 25 man. That fills up the rotation. What do we do with BMac, Hurley, Harrison, and Hunter?
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
by bigsteve on Aug 30, 2008 1:02 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
BMac will probably get hurt
and Hunter can stay at AAA. we can see what Nippert does the rest of the year, and if he doesnt stick in the rotation then we only have 2 guys fighting for one spot (Hurley and Harrison). See how those 2 do in spring training and how Harrison does the rest of the year. I would like Both Hurley and Harrison in the rotation and that could easily considering how injury-prone Millwood and Padilla have been this year. As for Feldman, we have to keep in the rotation, he is just gonna improve even though he has been our best starting/most consistent pitcher this year.
Now we if we dont have injuries, then we could have a problem, but we lead the league in pitching injuries…

I agree that it is not ideal
but the bullpen is full of holes just like the rotation, quality is needed both places and I’d rather have people in places that they have the best chance for success. There have been hints for a while now that Hurley’s arsenal might fit best in the pen.
Not saying that I’d move him there in ST, have him and several others compete for rotation spots, then a couple that miss out on the rotation (Hurley? Feldman?) can start out working in the pen.
Everybody’s favorite trade target, Greinke, pitched almost exclusively out of the pen in 07 and it hasn’t seemed to set him back.

Wash Quote
“He’s inexperienced,” Washington said. “I want to keep him somewhere where he can be successful. As soon as he learns what he’s doing, he’ll really do some damage. He needs to learn how to make adjustments from pitch to pitch, rather from at-bat to at-bat or from week to week.”
I’d refer Wash to the homer Davis hit off Alan Embree last month to refute this.
