OT - Gustav

This is a bad one. The computer models had been all over the place but now are in better agreement that the storm will get fairly close to the Metroplex. One respected model even shows Gustav stalling over North Texas through next Saturday.
Meanwhile, out in the Gulf, it is predicted that the hurricane will briefly hit Cat 5 after passing over Cuba, then revert to Cat 4 before landfall. While there is a part of me that digs wild weather, there is also a knot in my stomach, knowing how many lives will be changed forever by this monster.

Worse, there's more on the way
Tropical storm Hannah might hit Fla or the east coast late next week, and there are two developing systems in the eastern Atlantic behind that. I hope Gustav doesn’t tragically expose what a joke the rebuilding/repairing of New Orleans has been as far as flood control goes. Those folks do not deserve the incompetency that has been lavished on them.

different situation
Katrina hit the gulf coast east of N.O. The north gale force winds across Lake Ponchtrain forced the leves in N.O. to fail. This storm is predicted to hit west of the city. The Mississippi delta will protect the city from the storm surge. I think N.O. will be fine.
Nolan Ryan should be the Rangers president, GM, manager and pitching coach.

Last I heard
His arm wasn’t recovering from his last surgery as expected, and his career was likely over.
The last solid peice of info I can seem to find on him is from Rotoworld:
Gustavo Chacin-S- Blue Jays May. 9 – 3:54 pm et
Blue Jays designated LHP Gustavo Chacin for assignment.
Chacin was solid as a rookie in 2005, winning 13 games with a 3.72 ERA, but has struggled while dealing with elbow and shoulder problems since then. He may be headed for more surgery and at this point is a long shot to pitch effectively in the majors again.
He did pitch in 11 games for the Blue Jays high-A team this year, but he had a 7.88 ERA and 1.84 WHIP, so it sounds like to me he had another surgery or his arm is cooked. Too bad…

We Are So Fat Away, It would just be a week of rain and green lawns and full reservoirs
as some1 who went through Hugo outside of Charlotte which was a Cat5 and 180 miles from the coast, DFW has nothing to worry about but a good solid storm entrenched over us.

WASHINGTON – Hurricane Gustav is growing into a monster Category 5 storm, the government’s disaster relief chief said Saturday.
David Paulison, who heads the Federal Emergency Management Agency, told reporters several times at a briefing that the storm was strengthening into a Category 5 hurricane — a category that means winds greater than 155 mph and a storm surge greater than 18 feet above normal.
Bill Read, the director of the National Hurricane Center, said he was going to issue a special advisory statement raising Gustav to Category 5.

Definitely could use prayers...
for those families evacuating and those working to assist them. I work in the emergency management field and have a lot of friends down south assisting with the effort.
I worked a 12-hour day today as I am directly related to the planning and response effort here in North Texas. Going back into work in the morning unless something changes. Not a lot of fun to work over a holiday weekend, but glad we are helping people!

For those of you in DFW concerned
This isn’t going to be much more than a rain event with perhaps a few brief gusts of wind attached. I don’t foresee Gustav retaining enough intensity to have a significant impact that far inland, or even over in my present neck of the woods in NE Texas (though flooding could be a serious threat in both instances).
Gustav still projects as a 140 MPH Cat 4 hurricane at landfall…catastrophic damage is imminent across southern Louisiana. Southeast Texas is in trouble if the GFDL model is correct and it stalls out – of course, the models change so frequently it’s silly to put too much stock into a single one this far out.

I'm in NOLA for law school
and we left on Friday afternoon. I considered coming back to DFW for the week but ended up heading east to Georgia. We left so early that we didn’t hit any traffic. Hopefully we are able to head back by Wednesday since it looks like Hanna is heading straight toward us in south Georgia.

The canal levee closest to Wash’s home in East New Orleans is being toppled by water. The Industrial Canal also has a barge that has broken loose and may pierce the levee making matters much worse. He must be a nervous wreck. Best of luck Wash!!!
