2008 Pitching Stats/ 2009 Staff Discussion
<!--StartFragment-->
As we watch this Ranger season come to an end during the last 1/3 of the season, I thought it might be interesting to look at the 12 pitchers who are currently in the organization who are going to be vying for a rotation spot next spring. I’ve posted some stats from the Official Ranger site as of 1 A.M. August 4th. I think who makes the rotation next year depends on who we can land as a free agent during the winter. I think if we land a Sabathia and or Sheets, the organization will probably go with a veteran staff with Millwood and Padilla filling out the #s 2&3 or 3&4 spots. That basically leaves one or two spots in the rotation to be filled with 1 or 2 of the following ten guys. Personally, I think Feldman and Mendoza have done the most to prove they belong in the Majors so far this season.
If the Rangers fail to land a big time free agent pitcher, I wouldn’t doubt if we saw another year like this year where we constantly have “rookie” pitchers filling out the rotation. I guess they will probably keep Millwood in the rotation because he has a couple years left on his contract and I doubt he’ll have much trade value for the Rangers during the winter. Padilla on the other hand will have some trade value for the Rangers if they package him with a catcher for something. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a rotation of Millwood, Feldman, Mendoza, Hurley and McCarthy if they went this route.

I really don’t care if he WAS an “innings eater,” Millwood has been disappointing as an “Ace.” While he didn’t call himself that, the Rangers failed to bring in some better pitching, so the role as the franchise’s #1 guy fell in his lap. If Millwood were a #3, 4, or 5 guy, I probably wouldn’t be so disappointed. But nobody with a 6-6 record and 5.40 ERA should be considered a #1 pitcher. I would like to see him gone, but his contact and recent performance will probably make that prospect unlikely. I expect him to be our 2009 opening day starter after the Rangers fail to bring in anyone better, yet again.

It’s really hard to complain about a guy who has won 12 games. But, I know y’all have been watching the same Padilla I have and know why this guy frustrates me so much because I’m sure y’all feel the same way. I hope teams look at his win/loss record when we try to trade this guy and not his ERA. I wouldn’t mind keeping Padilla as a #4 or #5 guy, but I can’t handle him at #2 behind Millwood.
Brandon McCarthy- 2008 Stats N/A
I still like McCarthy. I know Danks is really starting to come around for the ChiSox, but everyone in Chicago was pissed that McCarthy was traded and the consensus was that the Rangers won in this trade when it was first executed. I think once McCarthy gets himself right, he’s going to be a solid pitcher and eventually be a good #2 or #3 pitcher. But on the other hand, McCarthy really needs to step up and show the Rangers he can stay healthy before the Rangers give him a rotation spot. There is too much competition right now to just hand this guy a rotation spot. He should earn it like the others are having to do.

I don’t know about this guy. From the stuff that I’ve seen from him compared to what the rest of our young pitchers have, I don’t think his value to this team is worth anything more than trade bait. The best Gabbard could shoot for during his career is a spot in some rotation as a #3 pitcher. Personally, I think he’ll settle as a #4 or 5 guy or even a long relief pitcher. I don’t think he has the stuff to beat out five, six or even seven of our other young pitchers. He could be another guy to include in a trade package with one of our catchers.

I think Scott Feldman needs another season as a starter before the Rangers can really get a good grasp of what kind of pitcher this guy is going to be. On the high end, he could be a solid #2 or 3 guy with the movement on his fastball being similar to that of Halliday. Halliday doesn’t have an overpowering fastball, but the command he has of his pitches is second to none. If Feldman can throw his pitches where he wants with two fastballs that move in two different directions and a nice slider, there’s no reason to think this guy can’t hand in the middle of the Ranger rotation for a long time.

Mendoza has showed himself to be if nothing else, the most durable of the Rangers’ young pitchers. I honestly think this guy is going to blow Armando Gallaraga out of the water. As soon as Mendoza can realize his potential and start commanding his pitches, he will find a permanent spot on the Rangers’ staff. Period. I think he has the stuff to be anywhere from a #2 to a #5 guy. It all just depends on how good the Rangers’ younger guys are.

Hurley, like Mendoza has the stuff to claim a permanent spot in the rotation. He’s only pitched 25 innings this season so he needs to prove he can stay healthy before the Rangers should hand him a rotation spot.

It’s been so long since we’ve seen this guy pitch. It’s kind of hard to believe he’s only pitched 2 1/3 innings less than Hurley. I honestly don’t know what to say about this guy. I haven’t seen him pitch enough to comment. But he’s averaging less than 3 innings a start with a 6.85 ERA. This guy really needs to get healthy if he has plans on making the rotation next season.

The Joe Blanton starter kit. I was impressed with his first start and I think he had some great stuff against the Angels. I just haven’t seen it again since. I really think he has the talent to be in the rotation for a long time, just like Hurley, Mendoza, McCarthy, and Feldman. Although, with the talent in the organization, I don’t know if he’ll ever get higher than a #4 or 5 when all is said and done.

I think Hunter had an impressive debut. In fact, other than Harrison’s debut, I think Hunter’s first game was the best of the rookies. He got hit hard, but he sucked it up, went back out there and shut them down. In fact, he lasted longer than his veteran counter part. I really liked Hunter. I think he had the best stuff out of all the rookie pitchers. I really will be surprised if he gets sent back down this season. I think Hunter is going to really surprise some people over the final third of the season.
I don’t know if this season could have gone any better for a team looking to develop pitching or wanting to see how several different pitchers perform at the big league level. It kind of sucks that it had to happen in a year where at least some semblance of a professional staff probably would have us leading the wild card at the very least. It really does suck that we have the worst ERA in the majors to go along with the best offense. If we had just an average staff, we’d be killer.
Anyway, based on what we’ve seen in 2007 and 2008, I really think we will see four of the following pitchers in the 2009 rotation. If you look at these pitchers, which would you kick out if you had only four spots to fill? Which would you send down if you have only 2 or even 1 spot fill? The Rangers are going to be in a tough spot next year when all these guys come back healthy and if they can’t trade away some guys and even more of a problem if they bring in one or two big free agents.
But I really would like to know which of these guys you’d like to keep and which you’d like to trade and which you’d like to send down.
Feldman
Harrison
Hunter
Hurley
Mathis
McCarthy
Mendoza
My guess in order will be:
Feldman
Mendoza
Hunter
McCarthy
Harrison
Hurley
Mathis

predictions:
- the Rangers will sign a free-agent pitcher, but it will be neither Sheets nor Sabathia
- Gabbard will not be in the starting rotation on Opening Day
- McCarthy will be healthy next April; but he will suck… then go on the 15 once in May
- injuries will continue to be an issue.

whats so disgusting and disappointing is
when we talk about the starting rotation for this year which completley SUCKS or when someone like texaschief wants to know about pitching and then competing for a rotation spot next spring. It’s plain and simple. If stupid ass JD wouldn’t have got rid of Chris Young and John Danks (not to mention Gallaraga and Volquez) I’d bet damn well we;d be closer to catching the Angels right now and would probably have a beter chance in winning the wild card come the playoffs. I think the key was getting rid of Young and Danks. If we still had those two pitchers in the rotation. You can damn well bet we’d have a better chance in making the playoffs this year.

i think padilla is a solid #2
his ERA isnt pretty but he gets the job done enough of the time, considering our offense. feldman has also done enough to earn himself a spot in the rotation next year. I think mccarthy will be there too, if he shows any signs of effectiveness the remainder of this year. and i see us retaining milwood, so that last spot comes down to a battle between hurley, hunter and harrison, with hurley as the most likely winner. But this is all dependent on health and performance in the spring.

My '09 prediction?
1. Sheets
2. Padzilla
3. Millwood
4. McCarthy
5. Feldman
With Hurley and Hunter just a short phone call away in OKC to start.

trade
I’m thinking that it is more likely that we trade for a top rotation guy than sign one. Considering that we have all of our trade chips, including the 08 draft class that clubs could scout for 2-3 months, and the fact that no top pitchers want to play here even when we outbid people, I think that is the likely scenario: a young ace that we control for awhile a nice package of prospects.

Would you trade the entire package we got from Teixeira for Roy Halladay?

I agree
I just wanted to highlight how much we got for Teixeira. Think about it, would you have traded Teixeira for Halladay straight up last year? Without a doubt I would. So now neither of us would trade the package we got for Teixeira since it’s quite frankly more then he’s worth.
Having said that, you take out Andrus and Feliz, and I would trade that for Halladay in a heartbeat. You take out only one of Andruz or Feliz, I would seriously have to think about it.

If we got Sheets...
My guess is JD would make a splash for another starter as well…
I can dream:
1. Sheets
2. Greinke/ J. Sanchez
3. Padilla
4. Millwood
5. Feldman/Hunter/Harrison/Hurley/Bmac
Some combo of Salts or Blalock should get it done for Sanchez. Not sure about Greinke.

Boy
It’s really tough because, except for Millwood and Padilla, all of these guys have things they need to work on. It’s something I brought up yesterday in the gameday discussion. Which players do you want to get shelled in the majors and which pitchers do you want to have success in the minors. It seems like everyone has something they need to fine tune, so it’s tough to really tell right now who will be in the rotation. But I certainly wouldn’t count out the Rangers signing another Jason Jennings-like starting pitcher next season.

Oh and to add on to that
Why is everyone so confident that we are going to sign a big name pitcher in the offseason? Seriously I’d like an explanation, because I have to be honest, I don’t think we will win on bidding for someone like Sheets or Sabathia in the offseason.

Don't get worried about a bidding war
If he wants too, Tom Hicks has the money to beat anyone in a bidding war including the Yankees. The only question is if he would do it and if Sabathia or Sheets actually want to come here..

Milwood's a solid pitcher
His peripherals show he’s been a better pitcher than his numbers show. Fangraphs did a piece on him a while back; apparently, he has the highest BABIP in the league.

Hmm, I think the trend is downward
rather than fluky but I hope you are right. After we signed millwood, he did great for a 2/3 guy who pitched a lot of innings. His ERA jumped from 2.86 to 4.5+ , which is not bad for the ballpark, and people thought that he could have an even better year in 07. Well, he didn’t have a better year in 07 and is trending worse in 08 along with the emergence of chronic leg problems that will probably only get worse (remember that this is the season when he was in shape). I think when you have two consecutive seasons of an ERA climbing into the 5+ range along with 40 more hits than IP that speaks to a downward trend that suggests his high BABIP 2 years running is no fluke.
by Goyogringo on Aug 4, 2008 8:50 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Mendoza
What on earth has he done to make you say he has done the most to prove he belongs in the majors and he is the most durable? Wasn’t it Mendoza who earlier this year was injured and when asked by the coaching staff said he was fine but then went out and got bombed in Detroit after we scored like 3 runs in the first inning? To me he looks like another Kam Loe. A guy who relies on his 2 seamer/sinker and unless he can locate his other breaking balls for strikes hitters just sit back and wait for him to leave one up and crush it. Every now and then they will have a game that makes you scratch your head and wonder where thats been all year but then they are right back to complete mediocrity.
As for next years rotation. I think we do sign at least one FA pitcher. So FA, Millwood, and Padilla will be the top three in the rotation. Feldman is out of options and has done enough to, barring a collapse in spring next year, warrant a spot. The last spot will probably go to BMac. Hurley, Hunter, Harrison, Gabbard, Mendoza, and Mathis can all be in OKC as first line replacements if/when the needs arises.

Mathis and Mendoza
They don’t belong in an MLB rotation. Even ours.
If Hurley and McCarthy are healthy, they should be easily be the frontrunners. Feldman and Harrison fall in the 2nd tier.
Hunter is still a mystery. His stuff looked better than I expected, given his mediocre K rate at AAA. It will be interesting to see how he progresses. He could end up neck and neck with Hurley/McCarthy, or with a mop in his hand. He’s no Sam Narron, thankfully.
Like someone said above, I think it is much more likely we acquire a starter via trade this offseason. Perhaps Bailey or Kazmir. I expect us to go hard after Sheets and CC, and get nowhere, unfortunately.
This all rather obvious, though, don’t you think?

i still think hes got good stuff. he never got hit real hard. his fastball is slow, but has good movement and didnt get knocked around. his curve and change are both legitimately good.
id guess the injuries had something to do with his command. will he ever get it back? who knows. ridiculously injury prone. but if hes ever actually healthy Id guess hes still one of our 5 best.

Pitching
What is so frustrating is that with this offense, if you can find a guy that can do what Padilla can do or what Mendoza did last night (7IP, 4ER), neither of which are all that special, guys can win 20 games apiece. Ugh. The Ranger pitching curse sucks so bad.

Agree Completley
In order for the Rangers to get to a point where, when they go out to add a free agent pitcher, they don’t have to overpay then they must improve their team a different way such as making a trade for a guy that is under team control for numerous years such as Greinke. Then when they are truly competitive some of the top free agents may come to Texas without having to overpay.
