Tuesday a.m. things
Energizing win last night, and for what it's worth the Rangers picked up a game on everyone in front of them in the Wild Card picture.
Richard Durrett has more discussion of CJ Wilson's role and his curious comments. A part of me thinks that, in a way, this may be for the best. I'm not sure that CJ is an ideal closer from a stuff perspective, and it may be for the best that the Rangers decide that they add a closer-worthy arm to the mix to at least pair with Wilson, if they manage to compete in 2009 and 2010.
Kevin Millwood had a successful side session yesterday, but he's still at least one rehab start away from returning.
And TR Sullivan has some quotes from the team regarding their ability to come back and win games in their last at-bat repeatedly.

I definitely think we should go after K-Rod
One reason the Rangers were so successful in making the playoffs back in the day is because we had a dominating closer in Wetteland.
Actually, look at this.
http://espn.go.com/mlb/playoffs99/s/roster/tex.html
How sick were those #’s? We have 3 guys batting over .320, 3 guys with over 35 homers, 4 guys with 100+ rbi’s and another with 98, total 6 guys over .300, 6 guys with 20+ homers.

Wetteland
He’s why Mariano Rivera exists. God I hate the Yankees so. Rangers sign Wetteland away after he kicks the crap out of the Rangers in the playoff and the next year they just plug Rivera in there.
Nothing pithy here. Please move long.

Another thing that
really sucks is that Wetteland was available for a song (Feranndo Seguignol) from the Expos after ‘94 but the Rangers decided to go the economical route for closer (Henneman) which was probably the difference in the ‘96 playoff series.

Predictions
If the Reaper’s coming, it’s sure not for the Rangers.
I don’t see any way they play .347 ball the rest of the way, which is what it would take to end up with 76 wins.
And just for the record, I don’t have an issue with you or Josey criticizing Daniels, or thinking that he’s a bad GM. It’s just the intellectual dishonesty in statements like the one Josey made above. Yes, Daniels traded Cordero, Soriano, Chris Young. Adrian Gonzalez, and Danks, and hasn’t gotten much return, aside from the two months of Carlos Lee and the two draft picks recouped when he signed with Houston.
But if you (or Josey) is going to criticize Daniels for those moves, you also have to give him credit for:
- acquiring the team’s best starter for Ricardo Rodriguez
- signing Eddie Guardado and Marlon Byrd
- acquiring Murphy for two crappy months of Gagne, trading for Hamilton, who’s given this team a nationally identifiable player and MVP candidate, and signing Milton Bradley, who’s been extremely productive and one of the leaders in the clubhouse
- drafting Chris Davis, who’s gone from 5th-round pick out of a Texas junior college to legitimate major-league hitter in two years
- building the farm system into one of the best in baseball (and yes, he shares the credit with the scouting department and John Hart, who oversaw some good drafts of his own)
I don’t ask that you like Daniels, just that you be fair, and look at the whole record, not simply the black marks. Every GM’s made a few bad deals; Daniels is no different in that regard. But he’s also made some very good ones, and I have confidence that he has this team headed in the right direction. Your opinion may differ.

McCarthy and Hurley jump right in the fold and start producing… and IF Millwood can give you 3 or 4 runs per 6 after his rehab, there’s your pitching upgrade down the stretch. Lot of big IFs, but hell, this kind of Ranger excitement comes around as often as an election year, so I might as well put my better judgment aside and run with it. What the hell…

So, here's a iandom "if"
If CJ Wilson loses his closers job, and if Eddie Guardado took over the role for the rest of the season and was lights out… do you think the Rangers would bring him back as closer in ‘09?
I don’t support this, as I’m still heading up things at the Frankie Francisco For Closer campaign headquarters, but I thought this might make for some interesting morning discussion.

I dont think so
At this point in Eddie’s career, I just dont think its viable to assume that he can handle being a closer for the entire year. He doesnt have dominating stuff, so he has to rely much more on finesse. If you begin to put too much of a workload on him, you risk injuring him or wearing him out. Eddie can probably continue at his current level as a lefty set-up man for the next year, maybe two. But I think its unreasonable to expect anything above that.
Im not completely sold on the idea of FX2 as a closer, but I like him as an option better than Guardado if we’re looking internally. He throws strikes and he’s a lot more polished this year (something i was unsure we would ever see out of him) than he has been in the past. Theres something nice about being able to turn to a guy out of the bullpen that can come in late in the game and bring 95mph heat.
by 6th street on Aug 5, 2008 11:15 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Biggest Mistake
I think the biggest mistake that the Rangers made last season was to expect the group of relievers to perform at the same level as last season. Except for very talented bullpen arms, this does not happen with great frequency. Case in point, Wright. There is nothing wrong with trying internal options, but I hope Daniels adds a few more pieces to the mix.
by Excel Hearts Choi on Aug 5, 2008 11:17 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
In all fairness
I dont think the Rangers stepped into this season expecting to be 5 games out of a playoff spot in early August. I dont think they were so much expecting to get the same level of production from the bullpen as much as hoping that they could hold things together in what most expected to be a rebuilding year.
and, if youre going to go down that road, i dont think that anyone could have expected that the Rangers would have experienced quite the devastating rash of injuries to their pitching staff that they have this year. Had there been a little bit more stability, perhaps the bullpen doesnt have to be relied upon as heavily as they have…
by 6th street on Aug 5, 2008 11:23 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
True, but...
Bullpen performance varies with mediocre players. Wright was surprising last season, but I don’t think it was smart for the team to expect him to do the same thing this season. If you plan on breaking in the younger pitchers, you need a solid bullpen who can take over when they get into trouble.
I am not trying to blame the bullpen as to why the Rangers are not closer to the WC. You are right; this has been a surprising year, and there have been a lot of injuries to the starters.
by Excel Hearts Choi on Aug 5, 2008 11:35 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Im agreeing with you
Having a solid bullpen is important when trying to break in youth. Im just trying to say that I dont think the Rangers had unrealistic expectations for guys like Wright. I dont think they expected the same performance level as last year. I think they expected something mediocre out of him, which they felt would be fine as a stop gap rebuilding year.
And theres no way anyone in the organization could have expected to have a rotation with Harrison and Hunter in it in August. I think if they had figured on that, they probably would have tried to solidify the bullpen a little more.
All in all, with everything thats happened with this team, particularly the pitching staff, its rather amazing to see them where they are right now.
by 6th street on Aug 5, 2008 11:40 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
but
i am in agreeance that the Rangers should look internally first. Paying KRod 12 million a year just doesnt make good business sense. Paying Ben Sheets/Sabathia does. And trading prospects for a top bullpen arm probably makes even less sense. I think there are a lot of young arms in our system now that may be ready to step onto the Major League club and begin breaking in out of the bullpen. Id say that our internal options over the next 1/2 years will be pretty good.
by 6th street on Aug 5, 2008 11:19 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah
Just offhand, there are the obvious ones in Diamond and Madrigal, and Beau Jones and Ryan Falcon look like they’ll be interesting bullpen lefites sooner or later (though maybe not closer material). We should have quite a few more internal options for the ‘pen next year, no question.
As for Guardado, I don’t really think we should bring back Eddie at all myself, for the reasons you mentioned above – he’s gonna be what, 39 next year? I don’t think he can really be counted on to stay healthy and continue this same level of success in ‘09 at all, really.
We need to hire Chuck Norris to kick the ass of any Ranger fan caught booing one of our young pitchers at the RBiA.
by lonestarJon on Aug 5, 2008 11:24 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
well
i think its a toss-up. I think you almost have to wait and see how the other off-season roster moves come around. if they are able to go out and get one of Sheets/Sabathia and/or another young quality starter, and if they decided to re-sign Bradley, I think that you can say that the team has a very good chance of competing next year. In that case, maybe they feel the need to go out and spend a little more for a quality bullpen arm. If things dont come together, and next year is again just expected to be another step forward for a young team, I think relying on Guardado on a 1 year deal again has very little risk.
Besides, from all accounts, the guy has been an important figure in the maturity of some of our young arms.
by 6th street on Aug 5, 2008 11:35 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I would
be very careful on Sheets/Sabathia I dont want an albatroze contract hanging around our neck for the next 6-8 years. I would rather package some top prospects and go out and get a Kazmir, Greinke, Cain, etc. in the offseason, and signing a lower level free agent like Oliver Perez and those Trades DO happen in the offseason so dont get on here and tell me I’m stupid for naming guys like that.
by blueballlefty on Aug 5, 2008 11:41 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
hmm
Kazmir and Cain arent realistic.
And if all it takes is money to land a potential 1 or 2 starter, then you do it. I dont think either of Sheets or Sabathia is a risk to be like Zito. You have a chance to get either of those guys, you do it.
Then, you take your prospects and go after a guy like Greinke if he’s available.
by 6th street on Aug 5, 2008 12:03 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Kazmir
... depending on what happens with Tampa Bay this season and what we would have to give up, it could happen and is worth exploring. Kazmir unfortunately is suffering a bit from CJ Wilson Syndrome lately: control problems, high pitch counts, increased walks, inability to pitch for as long as expected, increasing ERA. Mechanical problem? Probably. Is Kazmir the #1 when he’s on his game? Yes. Can David Price be even better than him. I’d say so. Thus, Tampa could use him to add other pieces they lack since they have Price waiting in the wings.
On the other hand, the Rays have him locked down through 2012 at 39.5 million, with 28.5 guaranteed….. an outrageously inexpensive deal for a guy as talented as he is. It’d be tough for cheap skate Tampa Bay to part with a tremendous talent like Kaz at such a great team value. Moreover, Tampa’s brass has developed a reputation for demanding too much in trade talks and sticking to their guns. Thus, it could be tricky to pull off.
There is no such thing as global warming. David Murphy was cold, so he turned the sun up.

well...
You can’t be gunshy because of what happened with Park and to some extent Millwood.
This team cannot afford to be choosy when it comes to starting pitching. If a top guy is willing to come here, we need to get it done.
As for trading for a young guy….yes it happens sometimes, but its not as easy as it sounds and you had better be prepared to part with Chris Davis, Neftalli Feliz, and Taylor Teagarden.
and Why would Tampa trade Kazmir? That like a team trying to talk you into trading Josh hamilton to them.

Why do you claim paying $12M
for KRod does not make sense?
Not that I am saying to do it but what is your premise to say no to the option.
My point of view is that there is no salary cap in MLB, the Rangers have IMO plenty of room to increase their payroll, and KRod, though expensive, could really help the team. IMO you can (if you wanted) have Krod, Sheets and CC but Mr. Hicks would have to cough up the cash.
For reference, the Rangers 08 team payroll is 67.7M. The Marlins are at $21.8M and the Yanks are at $209M. The Rangers payroll is 21st of the 30 MLB teams. The average payroll for a MLB team is $89.5M, the median is over $81M. There is some payroll flexibility IF the Rangers wanted to use it.
I do agree that we have many internal options for both the rotation and the pen. I also think I would rather use some of that “payroll flexibility” on a CC and Krod rather than for contract like Meche or Marquis. No guarentees but I’d take my chances.

Eh, it's a matter of opinion, I guess
I think that if Frankie can go out there with the confidence to make his pitches, throw strikes and challenge hitters with that 95mph fastball, he’s the best option we have right now. And he’s been doing that lately, and he did it last night (Nady just got a first-pitch mistake).
Long term I think Diamond, Madrigal or some other option will emerge, but for now and the start of 2009, I think Frankie best-fits the 9th inning profile.

ugh, guess
we’ll have to just disagree, I love Frankie in the pen but still dont think he would be a better option than CJ or Eddie. If Frankie could add/perfect one more pitch besides his fastball then I might agree, but he needs a slider/curveball/cutter/splitter something that moves and makes people miss, maybe Eddie could teach him the same splitter that he taught JJ in Seattle that would be awesome, then you and i could have a Frankie party haha!

Am I remembering right? Didn’t Frankie have a nasty splitter when he first came up 3 years ago? Did he lose that pitch with his TJ surgery or is he working back to it? I love Eddie’s mindset on the mound, but he obviously doesn’t have the burn-a-hole-in-the-catcher’s-mitt type of stuff (although we know he’s been effective this year). CJ’s turned into a head case with shaky stuff. FX2, who seems to have overcome control problems that plagued him early this year, has the nasty stuff and the consistency to challenge good hitters late in the game. Let’s see how he handles it.

id gotta think we pitch hit Cat in that spot… and i think if im the Yankees i like the Marte-Byrd matchup better than a poor reliever like Robertson against a very good contact guy like Cat.

Robertson doesn't have a lot of experience in the bigs.
...people were wondering this same thing over at Pinstripe Alley…
one argued that Robertson shouldn’t have been brought in due to his lack of ability…
the other argued that if he wasn’t ready to pitch in a tight situation, he shouldn’t be in the big leagues.
we had this same dispute over Madrigal a couple of weeks ago.

allow me to play devil's advocate for a sec.
So the fans that buy tickets, watch games on tv, by t-shirts and ball caps and freaking $8.00 BEER for Gods sake, these are the people Ned Yost thinks need NO explanation after that fight? Does somebody need to make Nedy boy realize why he makes MILLIONS of dollars a year sitting in tight pants on a bench? Its not YOUR PRIVATE LIFE when your at work in public, if that would have happened in the stands then you would have seen everyone involved no matter what go to JAIL! Heck in most public fights the guys holding someone back ends up getting a ticket most of the time. not necesarilly %100 how I feal just thought I would throw it out there!

yeah I was just reading Yost's comments on it
and for some reason I thought it was on our front page, haha, now I cant remember where I found that link this morning haha, But FWIW Yost just gave your basic its none of your business answer, and said that when they got to the ballpark today that it would be forgotten! Just think its pretty crapy when teams leave the fans hanging when there TOP players do something so effing stupid!

It's a dugout confrontation...
Is it really that big a deal? It happens fairly often in baseball and other sports as well…
It happens, and stuff like that should stay within the team. Why air out dirty laundry in public? Things got heated and boiled over. Take care of it in the locker room and move on. Not sure why fans should feel like they deserve an explanation…

Benoit
the Rangers website says that Benoit is on the 15 Day DL.
he was placed on the 15 day DL on june 05 this year. It is now aug 05 this year. he is still on the 15 day DL. Do they (management) have to renew every 15 days or how does that work? I would like to see him back to his old self from last year. What gives with him these days?

No
15 days is the minimum he has to spend. For example Jennings and Gabbard were on the 15 day DL for a long long time.
Now if Benoit is healthy and they are keeping him on there he can file a greivance with the players association. Also the team has a 30 day rehab stint available which I believe is what Benoit is on right now.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

15 Day DL
only requires a minimum of 15 days. He can stay on there until he’s healthy without meaningful ramifications. However, he is currently on a rehab assignment, now in AA, and those can only last 30 days max, unless the players has an option remaining and is optioned (and Benoit does not).
Offense doesn't doubt me, but my first and primemost thing is defense and punt return and kickoff return

I bet
Beniot is really close to coming back, he’s got three straight scoreless innings under his belt in OKC. If we can get Beniot back in somewhat close to last year’s form, thats just another huge boost to our chances come September. Plus, his arm might be a bit fresher than Jamey’s

I trust Beniot....
as far as I can throw him.
We should have traded him last year when his value peaked…
maybe he comes back and pitches well, but I am expecting to be dissapointed.

Benoit
I suppose we could all be disappointed in Benoit but he really could help this ball club over achieve this year. He has had an ERA under 5 3 of the 7 years in the bigs. Not great but I would take an ERA under 5 with this bunch of arms for the rest of the year. Not saying it can happen but who would have thought that we would be around 4 games back for the Wild Card slot with this team with Aug and Sept left after the start this team has had either? I totally understand the pessimism shown in clinton 33’s post.

why?
what could we have gotten for him?
Benoit’s worth a lot to this team when he’s healthy…I believe he’ll get back on target
