Smoak
That seems high for him.
Offense doesn't doubt me, but my first and primemost thing is defense and punt return and kickoff return

Castner
I think I heard somewhere that he’s hurt, which would explain why he didn’t do so well in the Cape Cod League. Live arm or not, he’s a college reliever, and I’d just as well not sign him and put that 500k toward trying to sign Martinez or Armstrong or one of the other HS pitchers we drafted.
If we got Martinez, I just might wet myself, but you’re right; it would take AT LEAST a million to sign him, maybe a bit more than it took to sign Lemon.

Well if you guys think Smoak will go for 3.5M
Then that other 1.5M would mean we’d sign Martinez for free with my guess haha.

I think Smoak will be playing at the major league level by 2010.

I dont think
it would be unreasonable to expect that he could be ready for big league pitching as soon as September 09, if the Rangers had a spot for him. As it stands, they probably will take a full year of Chris Davis next year to evaluate how they plan to handle that situation.
But yes, it would be disappointing, I think, if Smoak isnt ready to face major league pitching by the beginning of 2010.

what number
was Ross quoted as saying was necessary for him to sign?
by clark on Aug 5, 2008 10:46 AM CDT 0 recs
Ross
I think it was right around that 1.4 figure, because he sees himself as a mid-first rounder. I see him signing for something closer to 1.25, personally, just due to the nature of negotiation.

Don't forget
that people compare him to an ARod light. They also say he’s more suitable for 3B since he won’t make it as a SS which is perfect for us anyway.

heh
Maybe his raw tools made someone call him a horribly bankrupt man’s ARod, but to even put Harold Martinez in the same sentence with ARod is folly.
And I don’t see why him having to move from SS to 3b is perfect for us.
Even if he signs he’s 4 to 5 years away.
God knows what the team’ll look like by then.

i'd say...
i think they end up signing last minute, and though we probably won’t pony up for all of them, it would take:
Smoak – 3.75mil
Ross – 1.45mil
Castner – 550k
Martinez – 1.35mil
Armstrong – 1.1mil
like i said, we don’t pony up for all of them, but how awesome would it be if we did…

there is no way Castner signs
he’s a sophomore with leverage and stand to get a lot more next yr if he pitches well and is healthy.
Frankly, people extolling Armstrong because of his pedigree, i just don’t get. He wasn’t a ft pitcher and his stuff doesn’t seem to bowl one over. Ruetteger was the other pedigree guy people want for some reason. There is no way martinez signs for less than first round money and we are not going to offer that too him as he doesnt deserve it. He is better served going to school. I wanted Bradlely Miller excellent Def. shortstop who can actually stay at the position (unlike West or whittleman) and Freunab , who has gone back to school. Anyone aftert 30 is probably irrelevant other than those two, though I wonder if Petralli Jr is any good, and if he really pojects as a pro or wants to play considering he has been drafted 3-4 times, 2x by the rangers. One guy inside top 30 is LHP Prep Charles Lowell who I don’t know much about….

castner
Also, Castner has had one appearance in the Cape Cod league which seems to indicate he is not healthy. I he wowed people he could’ve signed for above -slot money so he had every incentive to pitch. If he isn’t, he’s hurt and he’s going back to school like any smart guy would (esp as a soph.).

Not saying it is not possible but....
That would go beyond busting the slot for both Martinez and Armstrong
per BA:
The only players to receive higher bonuses after the 10th round this year are Wichita State shortstop Dusty Coleman ($675,000 in the 28th round from the Athletics), Tennessee high school outfielder Tyler Massey ($525,000 in the 14th round from the Rockies) and Kansas prep infielder Logan Watkins ($500,000 in the 21st round from the Cubs).

regarding martinez
link to my post about him:
http://www.lonestarball.com/2008/6/6/547346/harold-martinez-info-scout
My Thoughts
Evidently his biggest problem at the plate is his lack of confidence. He came into this year as a top 10 prospect and even after his horrible year many still had him going in the 3rd to 5th round-range and some mocks even had him going in the middle to late 1st round.
I tend to agree with what I read at one point which was “talent doesn’t just disappear.” Clearly, he has it, and it seems as if going into this year he lost his confidence and it completely wrecked his season. He also seems to be a pretty raw player (most people project he will end up at 3b) and his bad season will probably point him towards college unless he gets a boatload of money.
Seems like time with professional coaches could be what turns him around. Again, he is a guy who has been watched basically for four years so the talent is clearly there. What is a little concerning is the fact that the fell to the 19th round, which would lead me to believe that he probably will go to Miami unless we meet his price. I would like to think that if we paid $1 mil for Lemon we would pay somewhere near that to get a guy that was a consensus top of the draft talent going into this year.
—I think it would cost somewhere in the 1 to 1.5 range to sign him and I am not sure if we would pay that, which is a shame considering how much better of a prospect people think/thought he was than Lemon, who never was seen as a top 10 guy (who was #120 I believe on BA’s final top 200 before his draft)
further thoughts: i would love to see us pick him up…i would think he wants something around what ross wants/gets… i think whatever ross’ bonus is sets the bar for martinez/what it would take.

the draft money
is getting soooo rediculous, out of the 30 some odd first rounders maybe 12 of them will actually ever see the show and they are getting CRAZY money, giving a high school position player $6.5 million thats just stupid!

Big money and next year's draft
I think that how the Rangers approach these big names who dropped will be a strong hint about what the team will do this offseason. The Rangers will likely finish above .500, and in the top 15 records in MLB, so their 1st round pick will be in jeopardy. Other than Bradley, I don’t see any Rangers who will obviously yield a compensation pick or two. Basically, signing two type A free agents may leave the Rangers without a pick until the 3rd round next year.
Basically, if the Rangers pony up the big bucks for someone like Martinez or Armstrong, they may be signaling that they are planning on (or open to) signing a type A free agent, so they won’t be needing to pay first round money to anyone next season. A guy like Martinez would basically be a de facto first round pick for 2009.
Put another way – if the Rangers are planning on pushing hard for Sheets or Sabathia (or another FA), they should go ahead and spend big right now to make up for next years draft loss.
by JBImaknee on Aug 5, 2008 11:43 AM CDT 0 recs
No one valued him as a first round talent _this year _ apparently
so you seem to be overvaluing him to say the least. If he is A-Rod light he would’ve gone in top 5 rounds and Boston, NYY NYM would have signed him. I remember one of the rangers staff saying they were intrigued by him and wanted to follow him over the summer. Does anyone know if he is playing somewhere this summer?

well,
I realize he wasn’t valued as a first round pick this year. But my point is different – if the Rangers aren’t going to get a first rounder next year, Martinez maybe the closest thing to filling in that hole. No one doubts he has first round talent, just that the risk associated with him is very high. But if you aren’t likely to spend the money next season, why not take the risk?
