He’d be starting for about at least 10 other clubs in RF/LF. Calm down and wait and see how he shakes out in the next couple of years… jeez.

by utlonghorn24 on Aug 5, 2008 9:08 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

He's a 26 year old rookie.

I’d be more willing to see how this shakes out in a couple of years if he were 23. But 26 year olds are in the best years of their career.

by Adam J. Morris on Aug 5, 2008 9:09 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Um... not necessarily.

I don’t have any examples off hand, but I’d venture to say that guys like A-Rod, even back to Sosa, Bonds, etc. (steroids discussion omitted) hit their strides in their early thirties. Murph doesn’t have the wear on his body that a normal 26-yr. old has, and therefore the same comparisons do not apply here.

Ian Kinsler has finally earned the right to be the third of my co-favorite players.

by utlonghorn24 on Aug 5, 2008 9:11 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

No

Some guys peak later than others, some peak earlier, but generally, a positional player’s peak years are from 25-29.

I’m not sure why Murphy wouldn’t have the wear and tear a normal 26 year old would.

Before he started juicing in his mid-30s, Bonds’ best years were from 25-28. ARod’s best season was at age 24.

by Adam J. Morris on Aug 5, 2008 9:14 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

It doesn't matter as much about physical prime

He still doesn’t have the experience of others who are 26, 27, 28 years old but have been around the league for 5 years or so. There’s still a learning curve

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw

by Gdawg on Aug 5, 2008 9:18 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with that for the most part...

But there have been exceptions, and you know it.

He wouldn’t because he hasn’t ever played 140+ games in a season. Not saying he can/will this season, but he’s on pace to play more than he has in his entire career I’m sure. That causes wear and tear on the body of a baseball player. Not sure how much simpler I can put that one.

A-Rod’s best season you’re referring to, I assume in 2000, wasn’t better than last season:

Year Age Numbers
2000 (24/25): 41 HR with 132 RBI and a .316 batting average.
2007 (32/33): 54 HR with 156 RBI and a .314 batting average.

Was GMJ, before his breakout season in 2006, a 4th outfielder?

Or was a legit starting COF?

Pre-2005? A 4OF.

But I don’t see how you can say that a guy with a 106 OPS+ is playing like a fourth outfielder.

Again, just this season. If you think that he projects as a 4OF, that’s a different story. But this year, I don’t see how you can make an argument that a guy with a better WPA than Vladimir Guerrero is playing like a 4OF.

Okay

Ichiro - 743 OPS this season
Rowand - He’s a CF. He doesn’t hit well enough to be a COF. That’s why I thought the “sign Rowand and let him play RF” suggestions last offseason were so silly
Howard—Also been okay, not great, this season

I work with a Yankees fan

And all he said to me this morning after last night was, “How did you get Dale Murphy out of the wheelchair and playing baseball again?” He was jokingly referring to David Murphy.

Nice, huh?

I guess he also said that we got past Joba, but now we have Pettitte and Mussina. Ooh. Scary. And he didn’t even know the name of the pitcher who gave up Marlon’s GS last night.
