Not a surprise

Wouldn’t be the first time in the last 15 months the organization knowingly let a guy pitch hurt.

by jamcadbury on Aug 5, 2008 11:10 PM CDT reply actions

if he's

consulted with a doctor and the doctor says that he can attempt to play through it, then there shouldnt be any fault on the organizations part. it should come down to the point where they determine how severely it limits his effectiveness, which it obviously has reached that point.

by 6th street on Aug 5, 2008 11:23 PM CDT up reply actions

wrong

Josh Hamilton is better than you.

by Longhorn on Aug 5, 2008 11:27 PM CDT up reply actions

and that is

very disingenuous, a lot of teams let their hitters and pitchers play hurt. It’s if they’re injured something is up. CJ is not the only pitcher in the league that is pitching with these bone spurs. He even said they tried to take care of it, meaning that something like that is done all the time in these type of situations. They’re pitchers right now that pitch with known slightly torn cuffs and pitch effectively, Pedro did it for a full 2 years with a completely torn cuff.

Maybe you don’t fully understand what bone spurs are and it’s treatment.

Josh Hamilton is better than you.

by Longhorn on Aug 5, 2008 11:36 PM CDT up reply actions

Understood

And perhaps I should clarify that remark by saying that I don’t know how long ago C.J.’s bone spurs were diagnosed by Dr. Keith Meister and friends, or how long the organization has known that he was actually pitching with a significant issue. I’ll happily retract that if it is reported the team has only known about this for oh, say, a week or so.

But if this is something the team’s medical staff and coaches have known about for a while, and yet they continued to run him out there in high-leverage situations (even though it was painfully clear that his command had reached a point where he could no longer effectively pitch at the big league level), then a major disservice was being done to both the clubhouse and the fanbase. And that, ultimately, is something I’d have a big problem with.

I hope we find out that this was something the team just very recently learned about. But I’m not holding my breath.

by jamcadbury on Aug 6, 2008 12:07 AM CDT up reply actions

Only CJ can say how he feels

No one can determine how much pain someone else is in. The Rangers have to go on what their pitcher’s tell them. If they say they can go then they are sent out to pitch. Obviously CJ (and others) have been less than truthful or tried too hard to get out there with poor results.

Hopefully, CJ gets his arm taken care of and returns to be very productive for us again.

The timing of the move

less than thirty minutes after a big win, and a game that he was throwing 96, seems to me like the move may have had something to do with the obvious disrespect that he showed his manager and his teammates. I think Wash had his ass diagnosed as soon as he threw that tantrum on the mound. I mean, wouldn’t a normal injury with time on the DL just be announced in the papers?

I don't really understand this

If he doesn’t have “closer stuff” - how can he have “starter stuff?” I mean, if you can’t get guys out in one inning - how can you get guys out over 6?

I mean, I understand the thought behind CJ in the rotation—he throws lots of pitches, when he commands them he’s hard to hit.

But, I don’t see how just stretching him out makes him a better pitcher.

I'm undefeated in fights. Have I been in any? No. Thats because people know my f'ing status. Don't mess with the elite. - Miles

Tru Dat

I also don’t see how someone that is a failed closer is going to have the stuff to get through the lineup multiple times. It would seem closers are usually found the reverse way(failed starter). He does throw something like 6 pitches, but how many of those are plus pitches that he can locate consistently.

Not saying a closer can’t become a starter but it’s generally the dominant type. I think ultimately CJ ends up being a setup guy that you can call in during high leverage situations. He can get out the occasional righty but I don’t want to see him out there facing three rightys in a row.

and I think the ordeal on the mound had more to do with CJ being disappointed in himself than anything. where do you douche’s get off talking about CJ like this, if what he said was true then this is more Ron’s fault than anyones. a player in CJ’s position is always going to want fight through an injury and be a part of something special, like what this team has going, its up to the trainers and coach’s to not let him continue. so like i’ve said before get OFF his ASS

by blueballlefty on Aug 6, 2008 12:14 AM CDT up reply actions

All of a sudden?

This has been building since spring training. First, he pisses off his teammates (maybe their fault for not having a sense of humor). Then, he is progressively worse as the season goes along, but manages to hold things together by a string to keep an acceptable save rate. Next, he decided to just throw a bunch of guys under the bus on the ticket for being bad teammates. The string breaks and he is utterly horrible. He pulls a dick move with Wash, whose ass he should be kissing for believing enough in him to keep throwing him out there.

That is far from a “a couple of bad games.” As for this injury, there are very few pitchers in baseball at this point in the season who aren’t pitching through some form of discomfort. I obviously don’t know the extent of his injury, but I’m sure most pitchers in the league wouldn’t mind having an injury that allows them to tune it up to 96 MPH.

Exactly….this is not about bone spurs, it’s about disrespect. this has been festering for quite a while. CJ

I dont know how much bone spurs hurt his but he needs to fix that. They might be affecting him mentally more than anything. And Im talking about not just the walks but throwing bad strikes.

Even though he throws 95, his FB is pretty straight and he cant just throw it by guys when they know its coming. His slider is very mediocre and has been non existent recently. He has no curve or changeup that Ive seen.

Its hard to get by with just a fastball and a mediocre breaking pitch unless you can spot the fastball wherever you want.

by kumizi on Aug 5, 2008 11:32 PM CDT reply actions

If he's really got bone spurs...

Seems like a poor decision in retrospect to send him out there day after day, running up his innings pitched and continuing to watch him struggle to get out of innings in fewer than 20 or 25 pitches. I can’t imagine they’d continue running him out there to watch him fail knowing he was hurt, but then again, this is the Rangers… It’s gotta be a tired arm and frustration more than anything, doesn’t it?

CJ’s biggest problem right now is his mentality on the mound. His emotions have gotten the best of him and he’s struggling to keep control of himself in games. Injury or not, 2+ weeks off should go a long way…

by N41D on Aug 5, 2008 11:37 PM CDT reply actions

Ceej's biggest problem...

Is that the league figured out he doesn’t throw strikes… keep the bat on your shoulder, and let CJ do all the work… I think he’s also got another problem with the umps, and that’s having a rep as a guy who doesn’t have good command, so he gets zero close calls… it’s a syndrome that plagued Bobby Witt back in the day… as opposed to a Greg Maddox type who would get six inches on the outside of the plate because he could hit that spot consistently…
As far as the injury, I think you could take almost any pitcher with as many innings minor/major as CJ, give ‘em an MRI and find some signs of bone spurs… but I’m kind of with the guys who are saying if you have serious bone spurs, you’re not bringing it in at 95… but I’ll also allow as how minor bone spurs could affect his ability to throw breaking balls effectively.
For the most part though, I think the guy has a ten cent head when it comes to competing at the major league level… which isn’t saying he’s stupid… in fact he may have the opposite issue and be overthinking it way to much… Paralysis by analysis can be tough as hell to overcome…

It might be because...

He’s had two very good outings in AAA following an outing in AA where he looked like the old Benoit – throwing 93-95 with a late-breaking, mid-80s slider and sick change-up.

That’s probably why his last 4 rehab innings have this line: 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K

Not only have his results swung back to what we’d expect out him, he’s physically LOOKED like the 2007 Joaquin Benoit. He’s ready, and he should be pretty damn good.

Just not sure what to think...

Very questionable timing. Wouldn’t they have checked this out in the last couple days when he wasn’t pitching and working on “mechanical issues”?

It sucks how BGL has fallen apart at the seams this year. I think many have forgotten how good he was last year. It still seems to me at least that the stuff is still there. I just think the guy has some issues with the mentality of closing. He has made some bad decisions (including the incident today with Wash after being pulled) but I feel bad for the guy and the team. I really thought he could be the closer of the future here. I hope he gets better physically and mentally and comes back strong.

Healthy or injured,

flipping the ball to a manager after you get pulled is a huge bush league move. Especially after giving up a grand slam to freaking Richie Sexson. As far as him pitching hurt and now coming out with the injury, the timing seems convenient for him. God knows I would want an excuse if I just pitched like that. I’m sure he was just showing up Wash because he was “frustrated”... what a douche.

by nsolomon on Aug 6, 2008 12:39 AM CDT reply actions

this is a pretty smart move

i don’t think the powers that be wanted CJ pitching right now but they also didn’t want to kill his confidence completely by just benching him. They say he’s hurt and let someone else be closer while the Rangers still show some glimmer of hope of getting the wild card.

If we’re out of the race by the end of august, at least CJ can come back and just take the closer’s role back to see if he can get himself straightened out.

And, as long as we’re still in the race, I think he stays on the DL list.

I think most of you are being a little hard on Wilson

I’m not sure if he’s closer material, but damn, the guy brings it at 95+ and has a place on this team. I think that he may be a little too contemplative out there on the mound and, lately, a lot too emotional. When the catcher throws the ball back and he snaps his glove like he does, hitters smell blood.

Bone spurs? i don’t know how bad his are. He strikes me as the kind of guy that would be able to throw the ball very hard through pain, though. Command suffers and that was his problem to begin with.

The things he’s said on this blog weren’t that bad. He probably shouldn’t have said it but certain people made a bigger deal of it than it was. I have to say I’m totally unfamiliar with his comments on KTCK.

The Rangers have slowly scratched and clawed their way back into some sort of playoff race. If it had not been for bad pitching (by a lot of people) they might still be way behind the Californias but probably at or very near the top of the wild card pack. The closer’s position is so pressure packed that I think it just got to him. The injury plus knowing you’re one of the most visible parts of the teams biggest problem…well that’s a lot for a young guy to take.

I think the DL is a good place for him right now. Everyday Eddie and Frank Frank can handle the eighth and ninth while Wilson gets things back together.

For now I just don’t think it’s cool to say hateful stuff about the guy. I haven’t read all of this thread but the “nsoloman” post above mine is the kind of thing I’m talking about. Calling him a douche, accusing him of hiding on the DL just because he gave up a slam to a washed up player. That kind of bullshit is needlessly vitriolic. I also don’t think he showed up Washington on purpose. He was probably very pissed of at himself at the moment.

“I’ll look back in a few years and laugh at all of this” after struggling, that sounds pretty obnoxious to me. Let’s not forget that he also knows a whole lot more about politics than anyone else on this team.

He’s also just got a little bit of perspective. It’s sports - it’s not the end of the world if CJ Wilson washes out of baseball - something tells me he’ll live a pretty fulfilling life regardless.

But, it’s confidence because he thinks he’ll get through his hard times, and be able to laugh about when he was struggling. I really don’t understand why so many people pick apart his words.

I know CJ is a complex dude. But what in the world could have motivated him to flip the ball to Wash like that? Had he been semi-effective last night and been in the process of being pulled, I could almost, almost see it. But he had just scattered gasoline on a game that was well in hand, and just served up batting practice to a .221 hitter. And then you flip the ball to your manager?

That being said, I felt for him on a human-being level. His season has come crashing down and to walk off the field last night to a unison, accapella boo had to have been humiliating.
