nice Bleier interview
Seems like a guy who’s confidant in his stuff, but not overly cocky. The more I hear about him, the more I like him. Perhaps another Matt Harrison lefty pitchability type?
Interesting stuff about Perez in there too. I’m getting ever-increasingly excited about our draft this year. Ross (when he signs), Murphy, Wieland, and Bleier all seem like really nice prospects. All of these waves of pitchers are wonderful.

Do not bring up Feliz this year at all. I don’t care if we miss out by one game I don’t want to see the kid up here this year. If this club as constructed can get that close this year then it only bodes well for us in the future. But that future includes Feliz. And I damn sure don’t want to rush that kid and risk messing him up for the long run for this season.

To be fair though
it’s very easy to say “no way in hell!” from where we stand now because the general feeling is that we have very little shot of making the playoffs and perhaps even less of a chance of doing anything in them, but if a realistic playoff run were dangled tantalizingly close to us itd be very tempting to want feliz up here a la K-Rod in 02.
by Smoakin in the Boys Room on Aug 6, 2008 3:05 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Feliz
It’s very tempting. I wouldn’t be surprised if he turns out to be our flame throwing closer and not a starter. I remember early scouting reports on him said they compared him to a young Mariano Rivera.
by Monkey Brain on Aug 6, 2008 3:13 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I've always questioned the theory....
that you can ruin a young pitcher by bringing them up to early….much like an NFL QB starting too early. I think that if you have the stuff and control, you are either going to be succesful or not at some point.
For the guys that come up and struggle, and never turn out to be anything…who is to say they ever would have been anything
by clinton33 on Aug 6, 2008 3:07 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Agreed
Plenty of great starting pitchers have come up and gotten rocked to begin their careers and been fine. That Greg Maddux guy comes to mind. I’ve always questioned the idea of rushing-as-destruction theory as well.
And to continue your NFL QB analogy, that Troy Aikman character turned out pretty good after being absolutely thrown to the freaking wolves.

Would a September call up be so bad? I guess it all depends on the 40 roster, which we all know trumps all.

Carlos Hernandez
Let’s look at him as a good cautionary tale. He was brought up from AA at age 21, was pretty dang good and blew out his arm, never to fully recover…
http://minors.baseball-reference.com/players.cgi?pid=21797
On Feliz, I’d rather err on the side of caution.
If Eddie can’t hack the Closer spot, then we know what we need to get in the Winter…Keep Feliz in Frisco and/or shut his ass down.
What's the rumpus?
by Hypo-Luxa on Aug 6, 2008 3:13 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
but who is to say...
That Hernandez would not have blew his arm out in the minors or at some point anyway….
I would rather not bring him up because of the 40 man, but if a pitcher is so mentally weak that getting shelled a few times in the big leagues ruins him…was he really going to be a dominate pitcher?
by clinton33 on Aug 6, 2008 5:03 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
His issue
was physical, not mental.
And yes, you are correct that blowing out his elbow could’ve happened in Round Rock just as well as in Houston, however, odds are easing him into the majors would’ve saved his arm a bit longer, at least. And Carlos was brought up as a starter and not out of the bullpen, but my point is we need to go easy on Feliz
What's the rumpus?
by Hypo-Luxa on Aug 6, 2008 5:22 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
oh how soon you people forget
the 40 trumps all.
To bring up Feliz for a very small chance at a playoff run, to pitch out of the bullpen, knowing full well he’d be in AA/AAA all next year, if not through part of 2010, would needlessly tie up a spot on the 40. With the addition of Hunter last week, we’re already caught in a tough spot this offseason.

I’m not understanding the “bring Thomas Diamond up” talk.
What has he done to warrant a promotion. There are better options right now. Somebody posted the other day Littleton’s numbers over his last 12 appearances and they were quite impressive. He should be who steps into our bullpen.
by Chris Hanes on Aug 6, 2008 4:08 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Diamond
I believe Clark was referring to guys who you may not think of as coming up to help out. Littleton and Loe will both be here September 1st when rosters expand. Diamond is already on the 40 and so he can come up as well. Its about time we at least started to get some idea what he can do for us. A few appearances out of the bullpen could be just what we need from the big guy.

it is pretty safe to assume we’ll see more out of loe and littleton this fall, and calero might be added as well. and i agree with Chris that Diamond does not have the stats to warrent a big league call up, but i think the org will reward him for his work ethic in coming back from TJ with a big league call up this fall, and i think most of us feel his long term role will be in the pen anyway.
by clark on Aug 6, 2008 4:27 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Tough question
From one perspective, every year you don’t bring him up shortens a 20 year HOF career by a year (did I just say that ??). From another, don’t wreck your superexotic car before you get it out of the dealership lot.
I don’t see any need to bring Feliz up now or the rest of this season, maybe a September look to flame some far fervor. And don’t push him to more innings than is reasonable for right now, either. I’ll wait. He’ll show up.

I was simply presenting a question hoping that it would stir a debate amongst the readers.
I think it would be a bad idea to bring the kid up. But I suspect that it’s a conversation that the Rangers will have at some point if they creep a little closer to the wild card and continue to need bullpen help. If Benoit comes back and pitches like he did in 2007, that will make it much easier for them to leave Feliz alone.
Here’s hoping

Feliz
I went to the RR game (8/2) here against the missions to see the guy pitch. I think this must have been his worst outing so far in AA. He was all over the place and fell behind just about every hitter 2-0 most of the time and 1-0 the rest of the time. He showed flashes with his fast ball here and there when he could locate it on occasion. He worked mostly 89-93 and hit 95 occasionally. I think the radar was also messed up since it only showed pitch speeds once in a while. I believe he only made it through 3 and walked 3 or 4 with 0 ER. His defense bailed him out a few times too. I like Feliz but tap the brakes a little bit. He only has a handful of starts at the AA level. Beau Jones came in to relieve Feliz and was really solid throughout. He did give up a solo shot to left center but after that he settle down and pitched really well.

The "clock" refers only to days spent on the active 25-man roster
So it would give him roughly two months of service time to call him up now.
As long as we wait at least two months into ‘09 to bring him up (for good) next year, then this won’t affect his FA clock.
Where it would suck is if we waited a month and a half into next season to bring him up and these two months added to his ‘09 season combined to be a full season, meaning we’d only have him for 5 years after ‘09, instead of 6 more.

Sorry didn't finish my thought
If it’s for him to limit innings and see meaningful baseball then I don’t see why it would hurt to put him in the bullpen.
You wouldn’t have to ask a lot of him at first…work him in a couple low pressure situations. Then you can start testing him in the setup role.

I don't want him brought up
Because I fear that if he is brought up, and starts having immediate success out of the ‘pen with his fastball, he could turn into our own version of Brandon Morrow. I want Feliz to be our #1 starter, not bounced back and forth between the ‘pen and the starters mound.
We need to hire Chuck Norris to kick the ass of any Ranger fan caught booing one of our young pitchers at the RBiA.
